Godfire: The Split Soul

Chapter 70: A Crack in the Sealed Truth

Inside the dark section of the building, the half-naked soldiers stood beside, shadows moved, jolting upward on the staircase, silencing their steps, and stopping at the seventh floor of the building.

Two of the figures moved to the closed tinted window and stared at the people moving hastily on the ground, grinning.

"I'm tired. When are we going to attack?" one of the figures said, slamming his fist on the window, which quickly cracked and sent part of the window falling.

A third eye moved toward the one at the shattered window, laughing. "Don't rush, that's how they'll behave when we strike. Let's give them a few days to the little life they have left,"

Under the shades of the raised platform, Wang sat calmly at the front seat of the first truck, staring heavily at the boy who was being cared for by the four nurses and tapping his fingers on the dashboard.

He cleared his throat, stepped down from the truck, and walked to the gate, placed a hand at the wall, and opened his eyes wide, staring at the trembling building now calming.

He turned back to the soldiers still finding refuge under the abandoned building's shade.

"Everyone, give me your attention! What we witnessed this evening was a sudden mine blast at the far distance. It wasn't an earthquake as some of you claim. We assure you to go back to your room and continue enjoying the good things the night has for us," he said, his voice sounding in a tone that didn't seem he was speaking the truth.

Few minutes as two men in the crowd nodded, debate stirred, followed by screams and shouts as they rejected the claims of the lieutenant also.

Gray, who leaned down checking Kai's body, stood up, walked toward Wang, and placed a heavy, chilled arm around Wang's shoulder.

"Why the sudden argument?! If you can't stay here, go in there, pack your things, and leave here in seconds." Gray said, his voice sounding too authoritative while slamming his palms together.

The soldiers with their penis dangling between their thighs picked up the moving polyethene and covered their penis with it.

One after another, they surged back into the gate, moving into the same building that had shaken not long ago and stopping the moment they reached their gate and entered.

But Kai didn't; he simply sat in the truck, jolting his gaze from the nurses and onto the night sky that stretched long like a heavenly carpet.

Around the nurse, he saw some of the shadows he had seen in his dream standing beside the three nurses standing by him, and heard countless vibrations coming from the building that had no light.

"Do you feel something, Kai?" the technician said, inserting a metal pin under Kai's foot.

Kai pulled his right leg fast before he could reply to the technician, letting his blood drip from his leg and onto the foam in the car.

Clara, who was now slowly opening her eyes, stared at Kai, shocked. She stood up, walked from the side at which she stood, and moved to the other side, closing the gap between her and the boy.

"Give way and let me check him," Clara said, gesturing toward the three nurses and letting the technician also join her as she did a thorough check on the boy.

She tapped on Kai's shoulder, inserted a small syringe into Kai's body, and pulled the tip of the syringe.

Spotting black liquid seeping out of Kai's body instead of blood, Clara turned, jolted toward Gray with her sharp gaze.

After thirty minutes of taking care of Kai, everyone outside the wall went back inside, including Kai, Lieutenant Gray, Wang, Clara, and the three nurses, including the technician.

Gray escorted Kai into a new building, stopped, and pulled out a triangular keycard from his pocket, placed it at the green light, letting the door open with a clicking sound.

When they entered, Clara joined them in the room, tilting her gaze around and smiling.

'Why bring the boy to your youthful room?' Clara thought, tilting her happy glances from the room and landed on her brother.

After twenty minutes of replacing some of the books with books Kai loved, Gray and Clara left the room, leaving Kai alone in the room.

Seeing himself in a vast room bigger than the one he stayed in for four years, a smile tore on his lips, yet the happiness didn't last long. The black liquid began to seep out of Kai's nose in reality.

Kai opened the glass door on his left side of the bed they had left him on, opening the door and entering.

He stopped and stared at the new mechanics on the building closer to him.

Kai stepped out of the glass door, wet, and shoveled through the box containing his belongings, his penis dangling in the air as he stood there wearing nothing.

Finding his night outfit, he wore it, sat on the large bed, lay on his back, and counted the marks on the ceiling.

Sweet and fragrant wind tore through the room, moving from the tiny hole in the glass window and snaking through his hair.

Outside the building at the remote side of Gilgal Village, four people stood there, exchanging calm words as if they were of the same age.

The faces of the two young men and the lady changed into a shocked expression as the old woman spoke.

Jinx, who kept on trying her best for the old woman to give them the full details instead of half details, moved toward the woman.

"Please, where can we find the second lady in this picture?" Jinx said, wrapping her left arm around the woman and using her right arm to take the picture from Nich's.

The old woman stared at the young lady, smiled, then gestured toward them to follow her. For minutes, they all walked in the same direction they had taken earlier.

Reaching the three-way junction, the woman stopped and pointed to the road going right. "This road will take you to her house. I'm done telling you what I know," her voice sounded as if she was hiding something from them.

She watched them vanish in the dark corners of the road, then headed back in the direction leading to where the mango tree was.

"Vanished?" Jinx said, scratching her chin as she walked at the front of the two boys following her.

Oin swallowed, turned, and squeezed his eyes, trying to see if something was following them. He turned when he saw no one.

"Do you guys think the woman's hiding something from us?" he said, letting them pause.

Nich, who had been quiet throughout, finally broke his stillness. "For me, I see her to be a weirdo, didn't you see how her reaction was whenever Jinx tried to get more information?"

Jinx and Oin turned and stared at Nich with a shocked expression.

"What?!" Nich said, staring at their shocked faces. "That's what I think. Can't I talk my mind?"

The free cold wind now turned slightly warm as they moved past the neatly shaped flowers and stopped at a five-foot wooden fence.

Oin moved toward the closed gate, opened it, and entered. Jinx and Nich followed, entering and stopping behind Oin, who had stopped and was staring at the only nice building they had seen since they set foot in the village.
