Regressed With A Copy System: Breaking the Loop

Chapter 38: The Unwelcome Wife

"Why exactly am I sleeping on the ground in my own room?"

Nolan muttered, lying on the floor, looking up at the ceiling as the morning sun casted its rays through the windows of Nolan's room.

Snoring on the bed, sleeping like a corpse was Selena. With a black crop top and her lower underwear, though she was covered with Nolan's blanket, her main gear discarded on the floor. Using Honeytongue her loosen up a little too much, though she didn't know he was going to come back.

Moreover, he used "Irresistible Allure" as well, last night.

Nolan had no idea where to drop her, so he decided to bring her here, and going out to get some water, he found her sleeping on the bed like she had been there for more than an hour.

He sat up, rubbing his neck. "Oh, right," he muttered, turning to the lady sleeping on the bed. "The wench's here."

He sighed and stood up, walking to the window, watching the commoners and other Novices and Sentinels from the guild, as they went on to begin their day's task. He had to get ready for their patrol duty.

They had been given shifts, whereas those who did night patrol today would do morning patrol the next day, and so on.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Nolan turned to the door. Who was knocking at his door? This was a first.

He walked over and opened the door. In front of him was Liana, her face still pale and eyes sunken from a rough night. "Good morning," she greeted with a forced smile.

"Morning," Nolan replied.

"I uh, didn't see you yesterday after we came back, and you also were not in your room, so… I was just curious." Liana said.

Nolan was about to speak when a voice came from behind him. "Who's at the door, 'husband?' Bleh, still tastes bad."

Liana slowly tilted her head and found Selena tilting as well. Their eyes met and the first thing Liana took in was Selena's dressing.

She returned her focus to Nolan. "Oh, I see you were quite… busy, yesterday."

Nolan sighed, pinching his nose. These are the kind of misunderstandings he hated dealing with. "Look, it's not what you think," Nolan said.

"Oh, girl it is what you think," Selena spoke again, this time her voice closer as she put a hand over Nolan's shoulder. "We had a pretty rough night. Hiding wasn't easy."

"What in the… get your hands off me," Nolan said, pushing her hand off.

"Hehehehee," Selena laughed mockingly as she walked back inside.

"She's speaking nons—" Nolan trailed. Looking at it word for word, Selena wasn't wrong. They did have a rough night and had to hide in the cave, but… with what Liana was seeing, her interpretation would be completely different. "well, it's just not what you—"

"No no, it's fine," Liana said with a forced smile. "It's not like I'm questioning your life or anything. I just wanted to be sure you're back. Get ready for the patrol." She turned and went back up the stairs.

Nolan palmed his face and drew down his hand. "Great. Just great," he voiced, closing the door.

Immediately he turned, he raised his hands in the air, shooting Selena a questioning look.

"What?" she shrugged, already dressing up. She had a nonchalant expression on, not caring about the misunderstanding she just caused.

"What was that for?" Nolan asked.

"Are you together or something?" Selena raised a brow.

"No, we're not—"

"So, what are you worried about?"

Nolan watched in disbelief as she got dressed, his mouth slightly agape. She was worse than he knew—no care in the world.

After finishing, she sat on the bed. "So, where are we going?"

"What do you mean by that?" Nolan raised a brow.

"I'm following you now," she said, casually.

"Why?"

"Because I know you're working to find out what's wrong with the world. There's a bigger conspiracy behind the human demon collaboration that I want to know. I was doing it out of curiosity, not because someone sent me. You look like someone who can find out. I don't know why I feel that way," she said, crossing a leg over the other.

Nolan covered his face with both hands and let out a deep frustrating exhale. "I'm in a big mess with this one."

… …

An hour later...

Nolan joined the team where they had planned to meet, but eyes were still on him.

Why? Because he wasn't alone. Selena had followed him all the way here, even after he told her—on and on again—to stay in the room.

Liana's expressed told she was a bit unhappy, seeing Selena here.

"Greetings everyone. I…" she trailed, putting a hand on her chest, making the introduction more dramatic. "am his wife." She pointed at Nolan.

His eyes widened and so it was mirrored by everyone else, who—all at once—turned to him with questioning glances.

Alexander blinked. "Master is married?" he whispered. "She must be even more formidable to have claimed him."

Turned out, saying the truth last night was a very bad mistake.

"See? They don't believe it as well," Selena said.

Everyone seemed to let out breaths they never realized they were holding. She wasn't serious, they thought in relief.

"Can we please just carry on with what we're here for?" Nolan muttered to Liana, his eye twitching in annoyance.

"And her?" Liana asked.

"Don't worry, I'll be quiet," Selena said.

"Shut up," Nolan snapped at her before facing Liana again. "She can help us," he said.

Liana looked from Nolan to Selena, then slowly nodded. She knew there was something between them. She just couldn't prove it yet.

"Alright everyone, let's go. We have a guest in our team today," Liana said, then her voice became more serious. "Please, if anyone meets a threat they can't handle. Call for help immediately, and…" she gulped. "Just… be careful, okay?"

"Yes, Captain!" They chorused. It came as a surprise to her, but it did serve its purpose of calming her down.

Cedric's idea.

After walking around, they felt a demonic pressure come from the woods—not a strong one though—so, they went in to check and eliminate the demons.

However, Nolan was already cataloging the scenery—the marking on a fat tree trunk, the way the light came in.

The timeline had been altered, but some patterns remained the same. If they had continued the training missions, then this would still have been where they would come for their third mission.

But that wasn't his worry, as he looked to Maximus who was quietly walking at the front—this was where everyone except the both of them always died.

"Crap," he muttered.
