Earth's Last Days: The Invasion

Chapter 177: 177: Fight at the South Green

Moving quickly through the city while still cloaked. Council Leader Vorik, Guard Commander Drevick, and Aleigha weaved their way back to the south green, where four militia members were waiting to ambush them.

Vorik, Drevick, and Aleigha were prepared to do what they had to do. They made sure they had all of their weapons to take out the remaining four. If they didn't, the militia would recruit more, and it would be a never-ending militia. Humans in the dome would never be safe. They would be wiped out eventually if they didn't end it soon. It needed to end, and it needed to end tonight.

Reaching the south green, still hand in hand, they stepped onto the grass as silently as they could. They scanned around the park, looking for their four targets. It took only a few minutes. They found all four of the militia members hiding behind trees to try and ambush them when Vorik and the others with him showed themselves. The militia members kept peeking out, watching for Council Leader Vorik, Guard Commander Drevick, and Aleigha to show themselves. The four militia members were terrible at hiding. Clearly, they were amateurs.

Drevick, Aleigha, and Vorik had to go to the south green linked together so they wouldn't get separated. They also needed to know where each of them stood so they wouldn't bump into each other on the way there, or once they arrived at their destination. They had to know where the others were; it could get them killed if they didn't. There was a danger of getting injured or killed by friendly fire.

Stopping far enough away for the militia group not to hear, Council Leader Vorik spoke. "Just like last time, we take out those in our area. I'll take the one straight ahead. Drevick, you take the one on the left. Aleigha, you go for the two near the boulder. Be careful. There are two of them."

"Not a problem," Aleigha told him. "I have two knives. I can shoot quickly with my blaster, too, if I need to. As long as we end up with all four of their bodies and none of ours, I should be fine."

"Stay safe," Council Leader Vorik told them as he released his hand from Aleigha's.

Drevick paused before he squeezed her hand. "Be careful."

"You too," Aleigha told him. "Remember, you're my light in the darkness. I'm not inclined to let your light go out."

Drevick kissed her hand slowly before releasing it. He was reluctant to let her go. She was fighting two men. It was how they were positioned when they arrived at the south green. Like before, each needed to take out who was in their area. In her area were two of them. Drevick didn't like the odds.

Aleigha waited only a few seconds before heading to the two men she was supposed to go after. She strolled across the grass as quietly as she could, trying not to make a sound. On the way, she took out her blaster, released the strap on her knives, and unclasped the holder for her bladed staff. She was ready, regardless of what weapon she needed.

Once she made it to the two men behind the boulder, she looked over at the other two, who were peering from behind a tree, watching for Vorik to arrive at the south green to ambush him. There was no sign of them being attacked yet.

As silently as she could, Aleigha put her blaster back in its holster, pulled out her bladed staff, and readied herself to extend it. She knew that it would call attention to her as soon as she snapped it open. All eyes would turn to her. She hoped it would distract the two, making it easier for Vorik and Drevick to take out their targets.

Deactivating her cloaking shield, Aleigha snapped open her bladed staff. The ominous sound echoed through the south green. All eyes went to her. She immediately swung with precision, moving as if she were in a dance, slicing in a figure-eight motion, cutting both men's heads off one by one. It took only seconds. Their heads fell to the grass with a thud, their black eyes staring up at nothing. Their bodies paused only for a moment before falling limply to the grass. She had quickly dealt with her targets.

As the other two men pulled their blasters and started shooting at her, she jumped behind a boulder to escape the blasts. Aleigha hoped that her presence was distracting the two men, giving Vorik and Drevick time to attack them. As soon as she was hidden from view of the boulder, she clicked her cloaking device back on, then rushed out from the opposite side of the boulder where there was no blaster fire.

As she watched, the two men started to approach the large boulder, their blasters held high, ready to shoot the moment they saw their target. They wouldn't get the chance. Aleigha wondered where Vorik and Drevick were. She couldn't shoot them with her blaster for fear of hitting her mate and friend. She worried they would be in front of her aim, unseen because of their own cloaking shields. She had no choice but to let them kill their own targets.

As Aleigha watched, one of the men suddenly fell to the ground. Blood poured from his neck. From her position, she could see that his throat had been slit. "Three down, one to go." She whispered, keeping her eyes focused on the last one. He hadn't yet noticed that his friend was already dead.

The last man didn't seem to notice his friend falling to the ground; he continued toward the boulder, his blaster in his hand, raised and ready to shoot. His black eyes scanned the large boulder, waiting for her to show herself.

He kept moving slowly toward the boulder. Aleigha watched as he caressed the trigger of his blaster, ready to shoot. She could tell that he was itching to end her. He wasn't going to get the chance.

Suddenly, A large blade appeared through his chest. It had gone through his back and out the front of his body. The tip was visible as it dripped with blood onto the grass. The tip suddenly disappeared as it was yanked back out. There was a pregnant pause as the man looked down at the wound before he slowly collapsed to the ground.

Council Leader Vorik deactivated his cloaked shield, then Drevick soon after, causing Aleigha to do the same. They stood around, scanning the south green, making sure there was no one who saw what had happened.

They looked at the bodies scattered around them. All three were hoping that there were no more members. They had done their best to find them all. They had no more leads that would point them to anyone else. The only one who was alive was Kaul, the militia's leader, and the members hadn't even realized that their leader was missing.

Council Leader Vorik pulled out an incinerator gun. Using the incinerator gun, they had to quickly incinerate the mess of bodies before anyone else would notice. Once finished, they recloaked themselves and returned to the council chamber in the same manner in which they left it.

"Do you think there are more militia members in the dome?" Aleigha asked, not to anyone in particular. She wanted the entire threat to be done and gone. The only one that should be left was Medic Kaul. He would be dead soon; he was supposed to be the last one to die. His life would be taken by Jada for killing her unborn child. It was a life debt that Drevick had promised her she could collect on.

"We can only hope. I want to take precautions and continue to look for more," Council Leader Vorik stated. "I want my mate and children safe. Not taking precautions can get them harmed or killed."

"I can keep listening in on conversations to see if anyone is talking about it. I'll let you know if I discover anything that lets us know there are more militia members out there. I still don't trust that there aren't any on the ships in the fleet. Kaul's reach was vast when it came to influencing people. What we've dealt with could only be the beginning. We have to be prepared for that just in case. I really hope we got them all, though," Aleigha stated, worried as she looked around the city as they made their way to the council chamber.

"I will continue the interrogations of the people tomorrow," Guard Commander Drevick agreed. Looking at Aleigha. "Will you be sleeping in the tunnels tonight?"

Aleigha smiled. "Yeah, until we are one hundred percent sure there's no more, I want to stay with my son down there. I don't want him anywhere near the threat if I can help it."
