We kept walking around for several minutes and he answered my query. "… That thing chased us down here along with a couple other demons," he said while he led us to the others. "We managed to kill some of them demons but that thing we couldn't. Even took out Tarius. We are lucky Veronica is with us, I don't what we would've done without her around to help us."
"While I was fighting that other one, you were chased after by some other demons?" I asked him.
"Yeah, Veronica helped even Tarius. They protected us while Marie and I tried to help them out any way we could. Veronica acquired minor injuries, lesions and whatnot while Tarius got attacked by that beast. It bit his arm and tore off of him as it violently shook him. He was bleeding a lot. And from the subway we ran in here knowing that we were goners if we had stayed out there. We did lose them but I didn't know you were going to be here."
"I see. Donny I gotta something about those beasts. I myself wouldn't dare try and face them alone, they are unpredictable and uncontrollable making them far more dangerous. All demons know not to engage or even get near one of those beasts. After what had to face, I have to take responsibility for not being there to protect you all. But it had happened and I can't change that, I am sorry."
"It's fine Captain. You saved once and you will keep doing that for us. I know that you're have a 'past' and you are trying to help us stop these demons, so, I can't stay angry at you for that. Even though you hadn't told us anything. I am sorry for how I acted a couple days ago."
"No need for the apology, Donny. I should've told you but I didn't. You had to learn about it one way or the other."
"…"
"Are we almost there?"
"Yes, we are nearly there."
Donny kept his lips sealed for the rest of the walk. I could tell he was contemplating what we just discussed.
We arrived to where the others were hiding out. Veronica kept watch of the door, Marie was trying her best to stabilize Tarius whom was slowly losing consciousness. "Captain, you made." Marie said. Tarius looked at me and weakly smiled. I made my way toward him and Marie.
Tarius was lying up against the wall with a bandage soaked in his blood on his left arm. I crouched beside him and spoke to him.
"Tarius, you are not about to leave," I told him.
"Brother, there is nothing I want more than to fight alongside you, however the circumstances have been placed against us." He said. "That is why I am to go back home to the Supreme Deity."
"Tarius, I… could heal you,"
He turned his head toward me and slowly nodded. Marie was taken aback and didn't believe me, in fact everyone but Tarius did not believe me. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and held my hand above his chest. I released my power through my hand in order to heal Tarius.
After I had done my task, the missing arm grew back and Tarius felt revitalized. He kicked back to life while he was dying. You actually thought he was going to die, didn't you? That is not going to happen but then my healing is limited.
For instance once I have healed one person, I won't be able to heal them for three days and my power does not heal them once they are healed and taken away from the hand of death. If they were to get into another fatal incident or get a mortal wound within the three days they would surely die and I wouldn't be able to bring them back to life from death. Though my healing works all the time for injuries and wounds it isn't the same for those I heal.
Making it all the more reasonable to use my power to heal wisely. I had learnt this myself and quite frankly it is the worst limitation yet I cannot change it, neither my Mind nor Body can and I doubt that Aro and Fragius could change it either.
Marie was shocked to see Tarius's arm grow back and even Donny. When I looked back, Veronica bit down on her lip mischievously. I ignored it and looked Donny, he seemed calmer and more collected than he normally would have been.
"How long have been able to do this?" Donny asked me.
I couldn't say anything, for I knew that anyone of my answers Donny would rebuttal. From his perspective, he believes if I have been able to do this why I didn't save those people who were dying. Why did I let them die to lose their lives in other ways?
The answer I had wouldn't have satisfied his question yet it was the only reasonable one. "I did not want to appear as a god." I answered.
"A god? Oh, really? That's it?"
"Donny, you do not understand how this works and cannot completely fathom the consequences."
"Try me?"
"If I would have intervened with my power more, many would look to me as a solution and look at how we operate. If people recognized us because of the chances of being compromised would have been here and the demons would have come directly to us."
"What do you mean 'come directly to us'?" Marie inquired.
"Demons, angels, maybe elves –if they still exist- and I can sense power emitted and its use. If I constantly used my power, demons would have constantly attacked us. Not only that but some demons have already crossed over to this world prior the invasion. They would ever noticed and that would have made us a target."
"We could handle and fend them off, you know?" Donny said.
"That is but a foolish thought." Veronica chimed in to my aid. "Your Captain is a lot more than you think. He simply limits himself to not arouse any suspicion and drawing attention to himself and all of you."
"What are you saying Veronica? He chose to be more human to not deal with demons?" Marie asked.
"That is precisely what she is saying. The demons you may not know of are the dangerous ones that lurks in the darkness. His power would have attracted them and he knows the risk. My brother healed here knowing that we would have time to leave before the demons down here with us would come to find us. He reserves his power to not always be constantly forced to confront demons." Tarius said feeling better.
"Is that true, Captain?" Donny asked.
"Yes. There are far more danger that you do not notice and I prefer we do not face them of now. We already have a lot on our plate as it is. Adding more to it is not advisable." I said.
I looked at everyone's faces individually. Donny and Marie seemed to have not liked what I had said and they hadn't uttered another word out of their mouths. Tarius and Veronica had not shared the same sentiment but they seemed more content with our conversation.
Through the silence we heard shuffling outside the room we were hiding in. It was the demon that looked like Marie that had nearly fooled me if Donny wasn't there. She was a shaper –demons that can take the form of any being that has a conscious and pretend to be them-. In some regard they are dangerous only if you aren't skeptical about their actions.
My ignorance had gotten to me causing me to not scrutinize her in what she wore and the weapons she had. I wasn't careful with her. Donny helped and I applaud him for that.
I placed my finger on my lips using my body language to inform them to keep quiet. They followed the instruction to a tea.
Outside the room we resided in the shaper moved around and she tried to call us out and but heard nothing. She even tried to enter the room, I silently rushed over to the door and held on to the door handle disabling it from performing its function temporarily hence stopping her from opening the door.
She shrieked in frustration. That was her mistake as it caught the attention of the Kanus. It rushed over to this side after hearing her. We heard the commotion outside the room between the Kanus and the Shaper.
The Shaper briefly fought it before meeting her demise. There was a thud, indicating that she had hit the beast, then it growled and attacked her. She struggled to fight it off but lost to it. She screamed out while we heard bone crunching and flesh being torn apart. Her scream slowly drowned out and only heard crunching and squelching noises.
Everyone was on edge.
The beast left the vicinity back into the labyrinth of the hallways. When we heard that the coast was clear, we exhaled out in relieve. We didn't speak, we only whispered amongst each other.
"Is it gone?" Marie asked.
"For now," I replied.
"How are we going to get out of here alive?" Donny asked.
"We gotta find an exit back up to the streets. With that thing around we are going to have to move silently and when it gets too close, we remain still and quiet and allow it to leave before we can progress out of here,"
"Brother, this is risky even for you," Tarius said.
"I know, but we can't waste away our own time down here either,"
Nothing came back. No rebuttal and no questions. Though this was a risk for everyone we had to take it.
We left the room and took a corridor on the left. As we followed the corridor, we saw signs on the wall. Thankfully there was an arrow pointing out to an exit and we followed it.
We passed by multiple signs pointing in different directions before we finally arrived at an exit. I opened the door for my team and had each one leave before I did. I followed and closed the door behind us. We ended up in a stairwell and took the stairs up to the ground floor.
Outside through the ground floor door we found ourselves in the streets in Downtime City and quite possibly lost. Donny checked the map and reviewed it. We were closer to the old stadium but it was in the outskirts of the city.
In the dead of night we were out in the city at a time that demons were most active. Less humans were around as they feared their lives. Before we could move out a familiar figure was ahead of us.
