Devil Equinox

Chapter 27: AN OLD ACQUIANTANCE

As we stepped out steps, we were faced with a man that I had joined forces in the past. Corporal Jeremy Davis, one of the best leaders in the army but he was taken out to join the Spec-ops and it made him unreachable and would vanish without notice for days, even months.

Sometimes we would ask him what he had done out of curiosity, all he could say was 'It's classified'. Though I wouldn't want to ask him and I knew not to do so. Why? Some of my unofficial activities were not meant to be known by others, not even my team at that time. However it didn't I would start telling them yet.

"Davis?" I asked.

"I know that voice. Captain?" he uttered.

"Jeremy? You still with us?" asked Marie.

The tension around us seemed to have vanished and we moved closer to him. We did not expect to be seeing him out in the streets at a dangerous hour like this.

He was aware of the situation and our environment so he did not keep us out in the open, but led us into one of the empty buildings to seek refuge for the night. We did not setup camp there because we weren't planning on staying time was ticking and I expected the demons to have come in their armies.

That didn't happen and it left me wondering if the expected time was incorrect. The system wasn't creating to be accurate on these kinds of events since it didn't have the necessary data to do so making it close to unreliable on certain circumstances.

We set around while Veronica and Tarius took watch for the time being before we were ready to leave. Jeremy didn't seem to have aged much since we last met. His brawny demeanour, emerald green eyes, slicked-back brown hair, chiseled jawline and bony cheeks. He had gotten taller as well being at around 1.83 m tall. He had adorned a uniform quite peculiar, one we had not set our eyes on and I looked hard at it.

He noticed where my eyes were focused. He looked at his clothing, back at me and lightly chuckled. "I got this from my new job," he said. I raised an eyebrow after he said that. A new job? What happened while we were in our pods during our cryo-sleep? Even Marie and Donny didn't know what to say or ask of him.

"Don't need to go into details. I uh, quit the army, if I may put it in that context. The work got a little out of hand and I couldn't continue with it," he told us.

"That's not how soldiers think. When things get hard they don't just give up and call it quits. They make it work even if the odds are against them. Even you know that, Davis," I told him.

"That's the thing, I know about it but everyone I worked with felt the same. What we were doing, we couldn't stomach everything we did or saw. It changed me and I can't go back to that,"

"Really? So, that is it? Just a few bad accidents and you call it quits? Donny and I have been through hell for these past few days and we are here. We saw more scenes that we want to forget but we have to push on. Our miss-," Marie spoke and I had to cover her mouth before she said too much.

I slowly shook my head to tell her that even though he was someone we knew for a long time we couldn't tell what we doing in Downtime City. His suspicion grew as he squinted his eyes. He seemed to want to know something but didn't want to ask about it.

"So, what are you doing in Downtime City?" I asked Davis.

"Well I am on a job. Got a call from the company and we told to get here ASAP. We got here and couldn't believe what we were seeing. Demons, but I am sure you have seen them as well. Though it begs the question of what you are doing." He said.

"We can't share that with you. It's just classified."

Donny and Marie shot glances at me, wondering why I didn't just tell Jeremy about what we were actually doing. He may be our friend but something tells me that telling him would be our biggest mistake. Then he received a message on his smartphone.

He took it out to read the message and read it. Without lifting his head he looked at us and typed back. "What are writing there?" I asked him. He knew exactly what I wanted from his reply and said blatantly that the message was a call back for a rendezvous with the rest of his team.

What the hell did I just hear? There are others around here? I understand that he wouldn't be working alone but it does make the mission we are embarking a problem for them but wait what if we they aren't as such.

"What do you do?" I asked him.

"Well I can't say much, but knowing I can trust you. We were sent out to extract information from a research facility here in the city which was one of our objectives."

"Which research facility because they dozens in the city?" Donny asked.

"I can't tell you which because it destroyed."

All of us remained quiet, Donny and Marie shot glances at each other at me. He works with the men in suits that attacked the lab facility. I uttered words along the lines of 'we have to leave but thank you for inviting us over'. Jeremy looked at us quite surprised as to why we would leave when we hadn't done anything yet or even stayed for a bit. "You have to go meet up with your team after all," Marie told him.

Before he could respond to Marie, we took our leave. Something told me us that if we had stayed we would have been captured. Laura spoke about them and Jeremy was part of them maybe even their leader.

"He works with those guys Laura spoke off in the lab facility?" Donny asked.

"It is the only plausible answer. However his reaction seemed off. He didn't suggest anything of a malevolent nature." Tarius aired.

"He trained to not show any intention. He nearly got me too. From now he is not to be trusted or else we falter and fail our mission." I said.

"This just isn't right. How could he be doing this to us, maybe even general Mynde?" Marie asked.

"I don't but from what he had said he is working for someone. That someone couldn't have known about the lab facility in the city." I said.

"Are you saying that it was an inside job?" Donny asked.

I halted by the edge of the building we were moving past peeked over the corner. I was getting my thoughts in check but the only thing I thought was that someone in the government learnt about this and wanted to get the research but they couldn't get the others involved or a group of them had their interest in the research. Hired Jeremy and his team to go extract the research from the lab facility during the crisis in the city.

Jeremy wanted to capitalize on the situation and he did succeed. We couldn't do anything about it since we had something else to do.

Looking back at that thought, if Jeremy were to catch us, we would've been interrogated and might not live to see another day. Looks like my hands are tied on this one don't you think, reader?
