After packing our things and travelling the road for a few hours we had come across city lights in the distance. They were bright to showcase the vibrance of the city. Astounding and mesmerizing. My team was in awe, except for me. The dangers that are hidden by such glorious are horrendous and despicable.
Down the winding road was a quiet and desolate plain, with plenty of succulent shrubs and healthy trees. This area was further accentuated by the bright and serene moonlight. It shone so brightly that it lit the road throughout our journey.
In the black unmarked van that we journeyed in, Donny was driving and right next him were Marie and Veronica upfront and Dante and I were in the back. I set in front of a set of four monitors that were all lit. I was reviewing some documents with important information for our mission.
"Ugh, I am so bored," Dante had to announce. I tried to not look back at him and keep my focus on the information sent. It was of a business in the underworld tied to demons or demons tied to that business. The government, police and honestly those who are capable of handling all of this, turned a blind eye on such activities. Now it's up to us to clean up the mess they are definitely benefitting from! How corrupt.
"How far are we from Bronix city?" I asked Donny without looking away from the monitors.
"A few minutes or half hour away. Why?" he responded.
"We need to stop and make a left turn off the road before we enter the city. Once we do there's no coming back."
"Yeah, I had that this city has some grasp on anyone and everyone who enters and doesn't let them leave," Marie added.
"What? Really?" Dante inquired in confusion.
"Hey, I heard. I don't know if it's true,"
"As if. Come on keeping people it insnares without letting them go. I understand there are demons but the city being possessed is a bit much don't you think."
"You are right about there being demons in the city and that's why we are heading there in the first place. However, that's not our main priority. We are here to take care of a potentially demon lead underground business."
Everyone was silent, especially Veronica who turned out to be sleeping. I often wonder if angels really need to sleep at all. Tarius did not show any sign of needing sleep or is it that Veronica doesn't understand how humans communicate and feels alienated.
Donny took the left turn and drove on gravel road for a few minutes until we found a old house in the middle of nowhere or that was it seemed. The lights in this house were still lit and signified that someone was in there. He then stopped the van and turned engine off. Everyone got out of the van and stretched their limbs as this was our first stop in hours.
The house was to the left of the gravel road and on the right was equipment used for meteorological studies and a few dishes with receivers were scattered around the property. I looked around the area and didn't sense any thing around us, we were safe unequipped.
I walked up the stairs of the front porch and stood by the door and knocked three times with hand. I just stood there and it felt like no one was coming. I raised my hand again and before I could knock on the again, a young lad opened the door and stared at me sharply. He asked with the utmost serios, "Who are you?" I remembered that General Mynde had spoken about him and that whenever he asks that question, he would expect a code.
What Mynde told as the code was, "Blueberry Mable Marble In Light." Believe I didn't think I would hear that from another person saying it with a straight in fact. I uttered those exact words and the young lad nodded and left the door open as he vanished into the house, gesturing me to enter the house. I looked at my team who were waiting by the van. I nodded and they moved toward me. I entered the house.
Inside was immaculate without a speck of dust anywhere, the living room on the left was spacious and had two sofas, two lounge chairs and a coffee table in the centre of the room. A fireplace embedded in the furthermost wall in the living room was lit with fire to keep the house warm in the cold winter night. On the right side were a set of stairs that led to the second floor of the house. Ahead of us was a hallway with a few doors on either side of the hallway.
"Hey! Through here," he urged us to. We followed him through a door on the right just before the hallway. I was with Marie and Dante while Veronica and Donny were left outside. In the room he switched on the lights. A wooden table lay in front of us and he would around to the side of the table we were looking at. He lowered himself to pick a few things on the floor.
He came to one side and placed four large black duffel bags on the table, unzipped each one after the other. Inside was tech we hadn't seen before. New suits, guns, grapple hooks and a few explosives and a few gadgets like intercoms and smart watches. "This is for you guys to take, General Mynde handed these to me and trusted me to give them to you," he told us.
"That's why we are here," I told him.
"Look you guys are late, I expected you a lot earlier than these times. But what am I gonna do about, nothing. Next time you aren't getting anything from me next time," he informed us.
"Yeah, I could tell by your tone," I told him.
"Never mind that. Since, you're going into Bronix City, I should give you a few tips. 1. Do not stay up out late at night, that's how you disappear mysteriously. 2. Do not trust anyone in that city whether their good or bad, that's how you end up dying early. 3. Do not go into dark alleys or poorly lit ones, you're gonna end up in the news as the city's latest statistic. Last but not least those lights blind you from what's around you, you might get robbed or even worse killed, Trust me, I have told other people the same thing and they ended up as either dead, mauled, disembowelled, skinned alive bare to the bone or missing. Those are the best-case scenarios; you don't want to picture the rest."
"Oh shit! It's that bad? I love it," Dante said.
"What the fuck is wrong you," the young lad said.
Honestly that was the one thing that kind of encapsulated what we had been thinking after we heard his words. He later gave us his name Greg Mitchel. He was a bright kid. And so, we left his property and got back on to the road heading into Bronix City. I just remembered that it was infamously called the city of the mourning souls. I don't even know why.
The city was very bright that we could barely see the night sky above through the windows of the van. Pedestrians were littered on the streets partying and having uncontrolled fun to the point that even having sex in public was celebrated and watched as if it were a gripping movie. These people were sick in the head to be doing all of this and yet they didn't care.
"What the fuck did I just witness?" Marie asked.
"Isn't that what you humans do?" Veronica asked.
"What?!?! No!!!!" Donny replied harshly.
"Hey! I am trying to get some entertainment out of this visit already," Dante told us.
"What the fuck is wrong with yo-," Marie tried to say.
"Could you stop quarrelling like little fucking kids. We are on a mission right now and you shall get to whatever the fuck you were doing while we lay low and settled in. We are going to be here for a while so, buckle the fuck up and get ready to enjoy the fucking rollercoaster ride," I told everyone.
"Sir yes sir," they all replied except for Dante and Veronica.
As for Veronica she wasn't accustomed to this form of communication and show of respect. Dante genuinely didn't two flying fucks of who I was except for the fact that I surpass him in many aspects and yet he doesn't do as I ask of him for the most part.
Besides that we had arrived in dangerous untamed, unfiltered, uncensored and adulterated activity of the city of Bronix.
