Amelia took me a couple blocks to diner called the Demon's Kitchen. A concerning choice of words for a diner, yet no one cared. The food here was more than delectable with fresh and warm aroma with different kinds of stews, spices and soup all meant to dissolve your mouth in pleasurable flavour. Here I thought it was a simple diner, but it was a full-blown restaurant under the guise of a diner. Different kinds of meat were served from beef to lobster and shrimp.
Though it was serving haughty meals, it did it at more affordable prices than regular restaurants of this calibre. It was bustling with business, an influx of hungry customers flooding in and an outflux of satisfied customers rushing out, waiters and waitresses going to table to serve food collect orders and escort people to their tables, the kitchen staff working on preparing meals and receiving the orders. The sound of kitchen flames, pots and pans clanging as they moved them around and stirred food in them.
It was a lot of work being undertaken and it didn't seem to be anyone cleaning the place but how it looked baffled me was how clean it was. It was impeccable, there were no signs that this place was not being well taken care of. What conflicted with its cleanliness was the number of people moving about in and out of the diner. Tables were packed with barely any left to spare.
Amelia and I were lucky enough to get a spot to seat before others who had to wait their turn. A waiter came to attend to our others. He wore black trousers, a white shirt and black bow tie, the common waiter trope. Though the waitresses dressed in more revealing clothing and would often be harassed by the male customers. We added a couple of burgers and fries, and the waiter took our orders and left. Of all the meals we could've gotten Amelia got those for her and I.
In the time we were waiting we spoke. "Thank you for earlier this morning again," she said gratefully. I looked at her unfazed by such words, she had something she wanted to say and I allowed her to. "Looks like you're not much of a talker," she spoke after thorough analysis of my behaviour. I looked at her pale looking face and skin. She had tattoos on her right arm, a bear, a tiger and a serpent, scars on her neck and left arm. I then asked her, "What are those scars for?"
She looked puzzled like she had not expected such a question, though she awaited one. "Well, don't we have a straight arrow. I am thankful that you saved, and I will return your coat, but don't you think you're rushing things?" she asked.
I set leaned back on my chair and crossed my arms. "I am not interested, Amelia. I just want to know what those scars are for and the real reason you bring me." I told her.
The smile she had faded away and was replaced with a saddened look. It showed she didn't want to speak about what was going on in her life. "Captain, I don't know you at all, we just met and you're asking me very personal questions. I don't appreciate that." She stated.
I leaned forward and laid my arms on the table. "I apologize for prying into something so private. I was wrong, while trying to help you." I said respecting her wishes.
"I don't need your help, okay. I can handle somethings on my own. You helped when I couldn't do it myself, and I thank you myself." She responded.
"If that's what you want, I guess it wasn't necessary for me to help you. I think I wasted enough of your time Ameli. Best I take my leave,"
I stood up from the chair and headed to the door, Amelia halted me when she cried out to me. "Captain, wait!" I looked turned my head in her direction and walked back to her and stood in front of her. "Why did you me back?" I asked her.
"I am sorry, I can't let you leave this place. They are outside waiting for you to show yourself."
My face tensed and looked back out at the entrance. "Who is they, Amelia?" I asked her calmly.
"The ones that violate me and use me as their fucking sex toy. They heard what you did to their own and were actively looking for you. They couldn't do anything with the crowd around, they like treating their guests privately. I didn't expect to see this side, and I would've passed by minding my business. However, something came over me and told me to take you away from here like you're important or something like that. Why am I drawn to you, Captain?"
My face relaxed and felt a strange feeling of calm around Amelia after she said that. It made me think and reflect about Melissa, whom I have not seen in years. I had to keep that to myself. During the moment we had, the waiter arrived with our food. I looked at the table and set back down to eat the meal Amelia had ordered for us.
It was not as good as she had thought, and we made fun of the food. Then we left the diner and continued to look around the downtown sector. We couldn't cover the whole sector, only a part of it, which of course meant that I would have to come back again. The buildings we were going past, held some value and I noted their locations as well. One of them raised some curiosity in me and was called On Live. Amelia told me that the building was said to be ran by demon brothers no one has seen and that new employees would often vanish sometime there. It made it all the more a place of interest.
We continued several blocks onward and I had spent a few more hours out here. My reconnaissance was complete for the day, and I found key areas in the downtown sector all thanks to Amelia. We parted ways and I returned to base. Marie and Donny had been there a while and Veronica and Dante were still out there.
