Devil Equinox

Chapter 44: PROMISES AND BETRAYALS

Down at the diner, down the block, I stood outside in the pouring rain, accompanied by dark clouds that exerted the sound of thunder here and there in lengthy intervals of time. I wore my navy-blue raincoat, feeling every drop that hit my water-resistant raincoat.

Today in particular the diner was quite empty though the staff was still working.

Inside the suddenly chilly diner, my eyes set on the individual I was there after, sitting and reading a newspaper published in the city. She wore a black pleated mini skirt, leather jacket and a crop top. She sat next to her blue umbrella. She leaned back on the seat, staring at the ceiling aimlessly, very weary of events that had taken place. Her outfit was very promiscuous as if she wanted attention, but she seemed devoid of life.

Her short hair, that she dyed white seemed to be reaching for the floor but couldn't reach. She lay there still but her body still moved showing that she was still alive. I couldn't see her face nor could see what she looked like.

I approached the table, took a seat and folded my arms. She groaned after she heard me seat down opposite her, but she was far gone knowing it was me, in her mind she thought I was another person in the city she might have known. "What do you want?" she asked in tired voice still staring at the ceiling.

Silence had only been heard by us both. The staff couldn't utter a word; their mouths hung open in shock. Amelia grew impatient of waiting and turned her head to look at me, to be met with me sitting in front of her. Her eyebrows raised and her eyes wide, mouth quivering so much that she couldn't speak. She then broke down into tears, uttering words like 'I am sorry', 'I didn't have a choice', and the most outrageous one of all, 'Please don't haunt me for all my life'.

All I saw was a young woman who tried getting everything together for it to only fall into ruins. "Amelia, why would I be here to haunt you?" I asked her.

She looked up with her watery eyes and asked, "You're still alive?" and moved back from the table. "Did you make a deal with demons? Tell me!" she demanded.

"Have a seat, and I will answer you," I told her calmly.

She listened to me and sat back down, pouting her lips and folding her arms. I told her everything she needed to know about how I have managed a bullet to the head. "You should have told me and let me know that you are alive. Since, I am yours after all,"

"You killed me, and you wanted reassurance. Hmm. Betraying someone even if your reason was valid doesn't make the pain go away. I will keep my end of our deal but now I have conditions, can't have you know my progress until it is actually done. I am leaving you in the dark intentionally and you should suit."

"Fuck that, I want to be kept in the loop. I want this done more than anything! I want Ravis gone for good!"

"This is a frivolous matter to speak to me on. I have made up my mind up and you can't change it, not even with your body. Got it,"

"You know what fuck you I don't need you anymore,"

I had reached a point where I had to evoke a feeling for her to not take me lightly. With the chains on my right arm, I pulled on them, forcing her to fall to her knees. I got up and stood right in front of here and looked down upon her. My eyepatch disappeared to divulge my left eye to her, and she tremored under me.

"I had not given you an option to tell me what to do. What I say goes, be happy I didn't decide to kill you. It would be of great benefit that you know who you are dealing with lest you want me to turn you into my pet. I had taken pity on you and left you as is, but it seems that you are treading through dangerous territory. Do not waste this chance I have given you. Betray me and I promise that your body won't be the only thing I will be ecstatic to break."

I concealed my left eye once more and left Amelia on her knees speechless and feeling dubious of my sincerity in helping her. Something had to be done and, in this dog, eats dog world any opportunity is the best opportunity. Well, it is determined by someone's situation after all.

I took one more glimpse at Amelia still on the floor on her knees and her legs sprawled under her hot body.

'Ugh, I didn't need to do that but …' I thought to myself pinching the bridge of my nose in my room. I set by the desk at the far wall in front of the door to my room. "You know, I do kinda miss those days in the military," Donny said by the door leaning on the doorframe his face seeming emotionless and withdrawn.

"Donny, why are you just standing there, if you wanna talk just get in," I told him.

He moved away from the doorframe and walked toward me. "We got contact from the top," Donny told me.

"He's here?" I asked him.

"Yeah, he wants to see in the common room. Alone. The rest of us will have to head out on reconnaissance and, uh, report back after a while. That's all I can say,"

"Hmm, you guys ready to head out again?"

"Yes sir!"

"Take your new weapons and keep them inconspicuous, any threat after you, human male or female leave unconscious. If they are demons and they pose a threat, eradicate effective immediately. If they negotiate and keep their word, let them help then eradicate."

"Captain, don't you think the last directive is a bit cruel?"

"It's either you or them, you won't know if they won't break your trust or not. Best to leave no traces then to have something lead them back to us. This operation is lengthy, but it shall not be compromised. If anything, use code: Mayday to initiate the self-defence protocol you with the weapons you came here with. It's time we used the gadgets we brought here."

"Understood captain. We will be heading out in ten minutes,"

I nodded and Donny left my room. I opened my desk drawer and took out a file containing Amelia's list and their potential threat level in the city. It seemed devoid of information, but it seemingly filled with a lot. It looked like it had no meaning to it, maybe our contact may know.

I stepped into the common room, and I saw a well-dressed man looking out the window to see the city in all its glory, so to say. He turned around and smiled, "Captain, it's been so long hasn't it." He spoke. The man I was standing in front of was none other than General Mynde who was in his forties working along side us and working under government, keeping a guise that he is always going to give full reports of situations.

"What do you have in your hands?" he asked after noticing the file in my hand.

"A list of parties in the underground world of the city provided by my accomplice whom I will keep their identity classified. This was between and a promise I had kept to them but also my progress with the list quiet from them,"

"Hmm, well, you haven't changed much, and it's only been months since you came back from Operation: BLACK ISLAND. You reported the operation a success yet there were a few of Jeremy's men dying on that island."

"Yeah, I remember all that. How is the old age treating?"

He chuckled. "Well, I am still alive that's one thing. However, work has been in my way of recent and I must get back to New Marine City to attend a debriefing to us all by the president."

"He is as useless as a useful pen, just have to figure out what to do with,"

"Oh! I thought you were going to refer to that quiet, retired assassin I have seen in the movies,"

"Who are you talking about?"

"That's besides the point. I skimmed through this list, and it has very high-profile men and women on it. Whoever your accomplice either hates these people or knows something that our intel doesn't have on them."

"Wait, you know them."

"It was a long time ago Captain. But looking back at those times they look absurdly young for their age, their probably sixties by now but they are very young, attractive and nimble for their advanced age. Ugh, they really stooped that low. Those sons of a bitches. You know what Captain your whole operation is covert and off the books. I will keep turning a blind until shit hits the fan with you and your team, remember that."

"…"

"It was good meeting you again Captain. Maybe after this operation we could go to another bar and have a couple of drinks, get drunk and get laid."

"Yeah, I guess that will work,"

"Attaboy! I will be heading out and make sure this task is done discretely,"

Before he left, he patted my shoulder and the door opened and closed behind me. 'If shit hits the fan with you and your team…' I replayed those words over and over in my head. He doesn't want to tell me everything, I understood that much. I couldn't fathom that he had a contingency for all of us, a contingency to terminate us all once we go rogue.

Smart motherfucker, I couldn't help but praise him after all this time. He had always had something planned, I just couldn't figure out what.
