Chapter 53: IT ALL COULD’VE BEEN DIFFERENT

I sat in my chair in front of the O.D.I.H system, right index finger between my upper lip and nose, staring blankly on the black monitor screen. My team preoccupied either with training, relaxing or planning out the next part of the plan and looking over some of our files on the underground network that we had built.

That night still lingered in my mind, what had happened to cause her to feel that way? I was still perplexed and curious at the same time. Was it from the scent I had accumulated in the One Live brothel? If so, how could it have been so effective, enough so that she had to flee?

All these thoughts swelled around my mind until I was broken out of thought by Marie, asking on how we are going to progress with the mission, as she had noticed that some of the names on the list were high profile people we couldn't reach. It had me thinking, and it seemed that Donny's contact will figure out a way for us if we ask and meet him.

Amelia was still a risk, and I wanted to save her the trouble. 'Amelia, I know you don't want me to continue but I still have to,' I thought to myself. "Let's see what that man Donny mentioned says about it," I told her. She didn't seem thrilled about the words I had uttered.

"We need all the help we can get." I finished.

"What about your contact?" she asked.

"It has gotten complicated. It's best I leave them be,"

"Alright, Captain I will take your word for it,"

She went ahead and spoke to him about it. He didn't seem enthused and came to me for a word. He was exhausted from all the working out he had done, with the towel on his shoulders, his shirt drenched in sweat and his sweat dripping off his face.

"Captain, Marie told me what you asked for." He stated.

"No need for me to say anything else then," I told him.

"We can't get the ins and outs through him. He made it clear that he no longer wants involvement in all that's happening in the city and I can't make him. Besides I don't know where I could find him other than the Public Service Sector," he had said.

"I understand your concern with this man, but at the moment he is valuable. Look all we are going to do is ask him questions, nothing more,"

"Okay, I will take you to where her and I met him,"

After freshening up and getting changed, Donny and I set out to the Public Service Sector.

The sector was more civil and the smell, of everything wrong in the city wasn't present though there was still crime happening. Every inch of the city has been dealt with by criminal activities, and it seems that crime was kept to a minimal, since a lot of children come here to play in the parks, go to school.

The sector had what was necessary, several hospitals and clinics a central police station, schools ranging from kindergarten to high school, and all other emergency services available. Though some of the police officers were corrupt there were some good cops just in the wrong place and time to be there. Their numbers dwindling in a manner that was amiss and we had an idea.

Donny took me down to the public park with a small lake in the middle. Ahead there was a bench and a man sat down, enjoying the peace of the park. I looked and some people enjoyed, and some had their 'fun' in the park. None of it was needed but it happened. By the bench I had stood and asked, "Are you waiting for someone?" He didn't turn his head; his gaze didn't shift away from the lake either.

"Yes, actually and they just arrived," he paused. "Welcome Captain, to this sinful city called Bronix City. I am sorry we didn't meet initially, I was assigned to aid on your mission, and I believe your infiltration of the dense network The Harlem, I am sure you know already, has created."

"…"

"Apology's for not introducing myself, I am old after all, and I tend to forget such manners in front of new people. Darrel Hadish, nice to meet you," he said stretching out his hand and shook it. "Now, we got that out of the way, follow me. There are some ears that want to hear what we have to say out here,"

We followed him to an apartment building just across the park. It was lavish and it made me wonder how he could afford all these. Donny was in awe and Darrel was amused, "It really isn't as grand as you make it seem," he said but it didn't change the fact that it seemed amiss for someone his age to be here.

We went up two flights of stairs, and my senses went off, something dangerous was around and I was on edge. Down the hallways still feeling tense, looking around the hall, we arrived at his apartment room, room 217. The room was dreary and reeked of the dead. My muscles tensed even more, and I was about to engage in combat before he spoke, "Don't try to fight me, unless you want him dead,"

Hearing those words I disengaged for Donny's sake. Darrel gestured us toward the living room which was in impeccable condition and was the cleanest area of the whole apartment room. "You may have a sit, I insist," he told us. The living room had two black suede covered sofas and a brown leather covered couch and we chose to seat on the couch.

Darrel went into the other room to get his favourite lounge chair and brought and set it down and set on it across us. "Well, let's have a chat, shall we," Darrel said.

"What is your game, Darrel?" I asked him.

His face gleamed with joy and gave me a wide grin. Slowly shaking his head, his lips parted.

"That is a wonderful question, what is my game? Well, I want to kill you and your friend and that little whore, Amelia, for what you are doing right now. However, I can't kill Amelia or else The Harlem, but you, I can kill. One thing he despises most is pests that just won't die, and you my friend, well, you are no different."

"You know you all are cow- "Donny couldn't finish. In a brief moment Darrel got up from his chair and grabbed Donny by his throat holding him up in the air. I was about to react, but he threatened to kill Donny if I don't stay where I am. He then grabbed his face and ripped it off, revealing a young face. Fooling both of us with the mask and his mannerism. He told us his real name, Igiris, The Harlem's right-hand man.

A smug look on his face appeared, showing his arrogance. "Now!" I shouted and Donny took out his dagger and stabbed him in his arm between the Ulna and Radius bones. He let go off his throat and I took the chance to tackle him down on the ground. I then smashed his head into the floorboard giving Donny time to run out of the apartment.

Once he was gone, I tried to follow him out, but Igiris held my arm and laughed maniacally. "Oh wow! What a rush? Hahaha. Now I want to kill you," he said ominously. I struggled to get him off me and punched him on the nose to at least him loosen his grip on my arm. I tried once more and he let go.

Bolting out of the apartment room door, I looked back and watched his body levitating up to legs and quickly spinning around, I ran for the stairs and he closely pursued. When I got to the stairs and jumped down to the ground floor and made for the entrance of the apartment building.

Donny was waiting for me there and Igiris stood behind him. I ran as fast as possible could and slid to reach Donny quicker, I tripped Donny and grabbed his shirt pulling him toward me just before he was decapitated. Igiris fell as well both he manoeuvred his body to land on his knees.

We stood up and ran right as far from the building as possible. Our pursuant couldn't let us go and he rushed us before attacking, pushing Donny of to the side opposite the road, I spin myself and had Titan Slayer in my hand immediately before parrying the attack. I then slid back because of the force.

"Very good. I am quite impressed, but I think you left something unattended," Igiris told me smirking.

I looked over at Donny who was standing up and Igiris shot something at him. I couldn't reach him in time, but the projectile was stopped by someone I remembered. They had demonic energy, my brother's, Darius saved Donny by deflecting the projectile up toward the sky and away from Donny.

Swapping hands to hold his scythe with his strong hand and he was in his human form. "You dare try to harm an important vessel of my brothers? I will then show you no mercy, for your iniquity," Darius said.

Wait a minute, what did he just say? Did my brother say, 'vessel of my brother's'? Am I missing something or what? I know this is not important to the story and you won't respond at all but at least make me feel like we are conversating.

Darius attacked Igiris and his scythe was caught by his bare hands. I joined and swung the sword with my right hand, he caught it as well, I had it disappear, spun past arm and gave him my strongest right hook with my gauntlet on. He and Darius did not expect me to have such weapons. I sent him flying through the building we stood by. I grabbed Donny, put him on my shoulders and fled from the scene.

"Why didn't you kill him?" Darius questioned me baffled by the choice I had made.

"He is too dangerous with Donny around us, I will not take that risk," I answered him.

We were leaving the sector without a plan and no trace to lead them to us. The situation just got dire.
