Drake's offer caused the tavern to empty almost immediately. They rushed home to write a letter to Bren. Drake had no idea that everyone thought Bren had been dead. He wondered what had happened for him to end up in the ordinary world.
Waiting for the letters to be written by the townsfolk, Drake sat at a table in the tavern. Renn and Ruby were on his shoulder in their small beast forms while Chad and Mike sat on either side of him.
Across from Drake sat his father, with Chad's father in front of Chad, and Mike's father in front of Mike as they waited for the server to come take their order.
When she finally did, after the server took their order, she came back and set the steins on the table. Each of them had a stein in front of them, filled with ale. There was a bowl of bread and soft cheese in the middle of the table to snack on while they drank their ale.
"If Bren wants to come back, is he able to return here?" Drake decided he wanted to know in advance. If Bren asked to be returned, he wanted to be able to give him an answer right away and not have to say that he has to ask permission first.
Drake Sr. gulped ale from his stein before answering his son. "I don't know. I didn't know Bren was even in our world until you told me. The only thing that we can do is to ask the dimension for permission."
"Why would the dimension say no?" Chad cut in, not seeing a reason for not allowing Bren to come home. It was one of the rare occasions that he spoke.
Mike Sr. was the one who answered. "There are always consequences for taking someone out of this dimension. I'm sure he had already paid the price when they took him to the ordinary world, but bringing someone back also has consequences. It's different for Bren because he was born in this dimension. The consequences for Bren being taken out of this dimension might be that he may not be allowed to return here."
Drake hung his head after hearing Mike Sr.'s words. He didn't like what he heard. "I don't want to have to tell Bren that he can't come back here. This is his home. I don't want to take that from him."
Drake's gaze wandered around the tavern as he thought of what he could do for Bren. His gaze landed on Gavin, who appeared to be listening in on their conversation. Ignoring him, Drake looked at his father. "I think Bren will ask us to bring him back here. I want to be able to do that for him. It's not just for him, but for everyone else who cares about him. This tavern is nearly empty. It was full when we arrived here. Most of them are out writing a letter to Bren. That tells me there are a lot of people here who care about him."
Everyone at the table nodded in agreement. Their own eyes took in the nearly empty tavern. They didn't want to take that away from Bren or the people of Draco Town who cared about him. It didn't feel right.
After some time, the tavern's doors opened, and townspeople entered one by one, refilling the tavern's many tables and counters. As they did, each of them dropped a folded parchment with a wax seal holding it closed.
Mayor Ivan was one of those people who dropped a letter in front of Drake. "May I join you?" he asked before pulling out the chair.
Drake nodded, then took a sip of his ale. He didn't say anything. His thoughts distracted him. He was trying to figure out what to do if the dimension refused Bren's request to return to Draco Town.
"I have a feeling Bren will want to return here. I'll have his home ready. It's a small living space above a shop. If he wants something else, he can stay there until it's ready." Ivan blushed, and pink splotches appeared on his cheeks, fading into his beard. He felt like he was overstepping in hopes that his friend would return home.
"I'm not sure what he'll do," Drake said calmly. He was still considering the situation. "If he asks, I have to ask the dimension for permission to bring him back. If he asks and the dimension allows it, I'll bring him if that's what he wants."
Ivan nodded, understanding what Drake was saying. The dimension master did a lot, but they always needed to get permission first.
After looking around the tavern, Drake turned his attention back to Ivan. "Will you let me know when everyone has their letter to me for Bren? I want to leave as soon as possible."
After finishing his own ale, Mayor Ivan stood. "I'll see who's left," he smiled.
Drake watched the mayor disappear before returning his attention to the ale in front of him. He then changed the subject as he looked at his stein. "I actually like this stuff. Too bad I can't drink it back home."
There were grunts and nods of agreement all around the table. Even from all three of their fathers.
Everyone at the table stayed quiet, waiting for the last of the letters to arrive. It didn't take long. Twenty minutes later, Ivan returned. He handed Drake a small stack of papers. "This is the rest of them." He declared.
"Good," Drake said, then stood up and stretched. "We need to get back so we can return for our next quest. I want to get them done."
After storing the letters in his storage cuff, he headed toward the exit of the tavern. Their fathers and his cohort followed close behind him.
When they exited the tavern, Nana, Nelly, and Tod were waiting for them in the town square. After they all said their goodbyes, Drake slammed his staff into the ground, causing the familiar bright light to appear, then fade. When it was gone, they were standing in the massive garage.
