Chapter 128: 128: Unexpected Quest Pt 2

There was only a thin slice on the goblin's arm. "Damn it!"

Drake stepped back quickly, coiling his whip around his wrist, and then shoved his sword in its scabbard. He pulled his bow out along with one of the arrows. After quickly notching it, he let it fly, aiming for the goblin's face. It struck him in the head; the arrow went through his skull and into his brain.

The goblin burst into light particles, and the coins fell to the ground with a distinct sound. Drake quickly picked up the coins and the small wooden box and placed them in the shoulder bag. With a sigh, he picked up the arrow and replaced it inside the quiver, and put the bow back on his back. He then pulled the sword back out and slowly descended the stairs.

The darkness cleared as he continued. At the bottom was a small chamber. There was a large chest near the wall. There was nothing else in the room. It appeared that the two guarding the small chamber were the ones he had fought. As he slowly walked to the chest, something sharp hit his shoulder. He looked up, finding two red-eyed, batlike creatures. "I guess it's not as easy to get the chest as I thought," he hissed, looking at the two creatures. They were too far to hit them with his sword. He switched hands with his sword, then uncoiled the whip. Lashing up, he easily killed the two bats.

After their light particles disappeared, gold fell to the ground, and a small obsidian dagger. He placed them in his bag before cautiously going to the chest. He opened it and took out the loot. It was a shiny set of armor, which he placed in his bag. He didn't think he would have time to change into it, so he didn't even try.

Cautiously, Drake headed up the second flight of stairs. The darkness faded into a lit room as he did. Nothing came down on him. Not yet anyway.

He rushed up them, not wanting to get stuck in battle at the top of the stairs. He barely made it before a monster goblin attacked him. It was only one. Swinging his sword, he slashed several times before he defeated the goblin. More gold fell, which he placed in his bag.

At the top of the stairs, he could go either left or right. Drake decided to go to the right. He would backtrack later if he found it went too far. He could also go back down the stairs and up to where he left off.

As he walked down the short tunnel, two more creatures came out, each one stronger than the last one he had fought. Swinging his sword, he cut through one of the goblin's faces; the goblin had no helmet.

The second goblin, however, did have one, forcing Drake to be even more careful. He swung his sword left and right, trying to cut between the plates of the goblin's armor. In the end, he kicked it as hard as he could in the chest. The goblin slammed into the wall behind him. Drake rushed forward and pierced the tip of his sword into the eye slot of the helmet. The goblin burst into light particles. Coins clanged on the ground as the light faded.

Collecting his loot, he moved through every inch of the small tunnel, making sure there was nothing else to find. There wasn't. The small tunnel was a dead end. "I guess it's time to backtrack."

Instead of going into the darkness, Drake went back down the stairs and up again, ending up at the top of the stairs where he had left off.

Preparing himself, he moved into the darkness. As he had thought, two more goblin monsters rushed toward him as the darkness cleared.

Slashing his sword, Drake cut through the goblins, taking three slashes to kill them. Loot dropped after the light particles vanished. The number of slashes it was taking to defeat the goblin monsters worried him. If it was that hard to kill the regular one, how was he going to kill the boss monster? He had no idea. He feared that it would be too strong.

After each time a portion of the darkness cleared, there were no fewer than two goblins that would show themselves. He kept his eyes going to the ceiling of the dungeon. He didn't want to be caught off guard by the bat monsters.

Drake went for a while, not seeing any more places to go, as he killed the goblin monsters and bats he came across, until he came across an area where the tunnel split into two directions. Both tunnels went forward, but each pointed in a slightly different direction. He could go either to the left or to the right.

In the end, he chose to go to the right.

Nothing came out at him. However, after going only a short distance, he found the stairs he had come up when he entered the small chamber where the chest was sitting.

Reversing direction, he headed back to the split in the tunnels and started down the darkened tunnel. He knew he had already cleared everything behind him. He could only go forward because there were no other offshoots of the dungeon to explore.

Another goblin rushed out at Drake, who quickly swung his sword. It didn't seem to faze the goblin. It lunged forward, nearly landing on Drake.

Drake kicked with his heel at the goblin's face, forcing it to fall back. Taking advantage of the goblin being stunned, Drake slammed the tip of his sword into the goblin's neck. It burst into light particles, vanishing out of sight.

In its place was a strange-looking book that looked like it had glitter embedded in the cover. He wanted to finish clearing the dungeon, so he placed it with the other loot inside the bag, not bothering to open the cover.

Just before he took a step, he pulled the book back out and opened the cover to see what was inside. His instincts told him he needed to see it.
