A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 104: The Pitiful One

The woman in front of him was none other than Shawn Lambert.

Tristan Reid's four goddaughters.

The other three had all done some shady things to help him, but Shawn Lambert alone had hardly done anything wrong.

Of course.

She had sniped Dirk Carter in a warehouse.

And attempted to assassinate Denton Quincy in the hospital.

The former incident was kept a secret by Dirk Carter and was treated as if it never happened.

The latter was thwarted by Dirk Carter and thus unsuccessful.

Since the prosecution didn't pursue it, she naturally considered everything perfectly fine.

"I'm fine now."

Shawn Lambert said.

Dirk Carter nodded and asked, "You came to see me, is there something you need?"

Shawn Lambert looked as if she had something to say but hesitated.

After pondering for a moment, she said, "I came to thank you, and also to declare war on you."

"What do you mean?"

Dirk Carter asked in surprise.

Shawn Lambert shook her head and said, "Dirk, I should hate you, but I thought about it. If it weren't for you, I would've remained in the dark. I always thought my godfather... Tristan Reid was a good man, but now I finally realize he's a complete scoundrel."

Upon hearing this.

Dirk Carter knew that among the four goddaughters, only Shawn Lambert still had a shred of conscience and could at least distinguish right from wrong.

This might have something to do with her experiences over the years.

"I also need to apologize to you, especially for how I treated you back then..."

Dirk Carter said.

Shawn Lambert blushed.

She also recalled how Dirk Carter had "bullied" her back then.

She said, "Of course, one thing doesn't cancel out another. I'm still going to settle that score with you. I'm here to warn you; one day, I'll strip you bare just like how you did to me, and use... use any method I can think of to humiliate you."

"Alright, I'll be waiting! But I'm curious, what are you planning next?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Shawn Lambert exhaled deeply.

She stood up and looked out the window.

She said, "There's no home for me here anymore. I'm planning to leave this place."

Suddenly.

She turned to look at Dirk Carter.

She said, "Everyone needs a goal in life, right? My temporary goal is to get revenge on you."

After finishing her threatening words.

There was surprisingly no ripple of emotion on Dirk Carter's face.

Shawn Lambert was a bit curious and asked, "Aren't you scared?"

"Not scared!"

Dirk Carter shook his head.

"Why not?"

Shawn Lambert asked.

Dirk Carter smiled and said, "Just like you said, everyone needs a goal in life. If I can be your reason to keep going, I think that's great too."

"Alright, I've said what I needed to say. I hope you're always prepared, because next time we meet, you'll be the one getting humiliated by me."

"Okay, I'll be waiting for you. I hope you can do it."

After saying this, Dirk Carter watched as Shawn Lambert opened the door

and left the apartment.

"Pitiful person."

Dirk Carter murmured as he watched Shawn Lambert's figure gradually disappear from view below.

At seven in the evening.

Dirk Carter arrived at The Argent Grand Hotel as agreed.

Dahlia Hughes had already been waiting for a while. Upon seeing Dirk Carter, she quickly went up to him.

"Sister Caroline, who wants to see me?"

Dirk Carter curiously asked.

Dahlia Hughes checked her watch and said, "The person hasn't arrived yet, you'll find out soon. Come on, I'll take you to the private room first."

The two maintained a deliberate distance as they walked in one behind the other.

Once inside the private room, Dahlia Hughes closed the door behind them.

She immediately wrapped her arms around Dirk Carter's neck and pulled him in for a passionate kiss.

After a few minutes of entanglement,

Dirk Carter asked, "Sister Caroline, did you miss me so much you made up an excuse to get me here?"

"Of course I missed you! But if I wanted to see you, I'd just invite you to the hotel directly. Why go through the trouble of booking a private room?"

"True! So what are we doing next?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Dahlia Hughes opened the bathroom door of the private room, her eyes a bit dreamy as she said, "I just got a call. The person who wants to see you said they're running an hour late, should we first..."

She stopped there.

Standing at the bathroom door.

Dahlia Hughes slowly unbuttoned her shirt.

With one hand reaching behind her back for a quick touch, her bright red bra slipped away.

Two "bunnies" bounced out, swaying invitingly.

Seeing Dirk Carter yet unmoved,

she ran a hand lightly up her thigh, pulling up her uniform skirt.

That's when Dirk Carter saw there was absolutely nothing underneath the skirt.

Unable to resist such temptation,

Dirk Carter threw caution to the wind, stood up, picked up Dahlia Hughes, and with a foot kicked the bathroom door shut.

"Sister Caroline, you're so wild."

"You scoundrel, wasn't it you who taught me? Every time I see you, I just..."

She seemed a bit shy as she trailed off.

Dirk Carter asked provocatively, "Just what?"

"Stop it, I can't say it."

"Why not? It's just us here. If you don't say it, I'll walk out."

Seeing Dirk Carter pretending to leave.

Dahlia Hughes panicked.

She wrapped her arms around Dirk Carter's neck, leaning in to whisper by his ear, "Every time I see you, I just... get wet..."

"Hahaha..."

Such unreserved words.

Finally stirred the desire within Dirk Carter.

The two lost themselves in that cramped bathroom.

By the time they'd finished, the bathroom mirror was fogged over.

After thoroughly venting.

Dahlia Hughes blushed and felt a languid satisfaction.

The two tidied their clothes and had just stepped out when the private room door swung open.

Upon seeing the person walk in, Dirk Carter was stunned.

"S-Secretary Lewis."

The person before them was a middle-aged man, a member of the Stillwater County Committee, standing committee member, and County Secretary Donal Lewis.

Donal Lewis was tall and thin, with glasses, giving off a sickly appearance, but his gaze was sharp, intimidating to behold.

There's an inherent tension between the top official and the second-in-command in the system.

This is necessary to maintain a balance of power.

Dylan Tate is a true local.

His entire career was built in Stillwater County.

Donal Lewis was different.

He had been promoted four years ago from his position as district chief of Ardmore City's Novara District.

Typically, in a county, the county secretary is the sovereign. What he says goes, but not in Stillwater County. Dylan Tate's deep roots evidently overshadowed Donal Lewis.

This has made Donal Lewis's leading position quite strained.

Anything he wanted to do required Dylan Tate's approval; otherwise, it was impossible to accomplish.

Theoretically.

Donal Lewis greatly disliked Dylan Tate.

The fact that Dahlia Hughes, who was so close to Dylan Tate, would arrange for him was completely unexpected for Dirk Carter.

Donal Lewis nodded.

He said, "Sorry for the delay, I had a situation to deal with. Thank you for waiting."

"No problem, Secretary Lewis. What would you like to eat? I'll order."

Dirk Carter said enthusiastically.

Donal Lewis waved his hand and said, "I asked you here, so naturally, I'll be the host. I've already taken care of the order. Please take a seat, Comrade Caroline, Comrade Carter."

He took a seat.

To be honest, Dirk Carter felt somewhat uneasy.

"I've heard a bit about your work in Sunglow Town. You've done very well. Immediately dealing with the likes of Tristan Reid is a noteworthy achievement, and I must commend you for it."

Donal Lewis said.

Flattered, Dirk Carter quickly replied, "Secretary Lewis, it was my duty."

"Comrade Caroline speaks highly of you. I'm reaching out because I wanted to ask if you'd be interested in becoming my secretary?"

The instant Donal Lewis asked this.

Dirk Carter's nerves became tense.
