Secretary?
Dirk Carter remembered.
Donald Lewis's previous secretary, Desmond Hale, had been dismissed more than a month ago.
It's quite funny to talk about.
Donald Lewis had a well-known quirk in Stillwater County: he goes through secretaries like water.
In his four years as the County Committee Secretary, he had changed secretaries at least ten times, with the longest serving not even reaching a year.
Moreover, none of these secretaries had a good end.
Some could return to their original positions.
Others were directly demoted.
The most unfortunate was the last one.
The first secretary to the County Committee was taken away by the disciplinary committee after just a month in office.
The charge was bribery.
Later, he was expelled from both the party and his position.
Now he was asking me to be his secretary; what kind of joke was this?
Stunned for a moment, Dirk Carter said, "Secretary Lewis, I'm truly honored to be your secretary, but Sunglow Town still has many things that need to be done, and I'm afraid I can't leave."
Donald Lewis paused.
He picked up a glass of wine and drank it down in one go.
He said, "No problem, I can give you time to consider it. This position can be reserved for you temporarily, but before that, I must remind you that you've already confronted Tristan Reid, and Magistrate Summers won't let you off so easily. Since Dylan Tate left, I'm the only one Sherman Summers is wary of."
Those words.
Made Dirk's heart jolt.
He quickly looked at Caroline Lynch.
But Caroline Lynch was just lowering her head, picking at her food, seemingly uninterested in their conversation.
Dirk Carter wasn't a fool.
Even if Donald Lewis was helping him now.
It couldn't be without a price.
After thinking for a while, he asked, "Secretary Lewis, I want to know, what can I do for you?"
After he said that.
Donald Lewis smiled.
He said, "What do you think you can do for me?"
Dirk Carter thought for a moment and said, "When Dylan Tate was alive, all the leadership members of Stillwater County basically only listened to his words. After he died, Sherman Summers has been gathering his team. It won't be long before he can compete with you and overshadow your influence."
"Go on."
Donald Lewis didn't refute.
Dirk Carter said, "You know I've offended Magistrate Summers, and he'll make things difficult for me. Making me your secretary now is also a signal to caution Magistrate Summers, isn't it?"
This time.
Donald Lewis nodded.
He said, "Caroline told me that you would understand my intentions at a glance, and she was right. However, there's another reason—"
At this point.
Donald Lewis's expression suddenly became serious.
Then.
Caroline also put down her chopsticks.
She looked up at Dirk Carter.
Dirk Carter had a feeling that what Donald Lewis was about to say was the main reason for today's dinner.
"I've always felt that Dylan Tate's death had some suspicious points. The current investigation results from the city are ambiguous and clearly not convincing. You were his godson, and I suspect you've been secretly investigating this matter as well."
If the previous words were thunder on a sunny day.
Then these words were like being struck by lightning.
Dirk Carter didn't know how to respond for a moment.
He wasn't sure what Donald Lewis meant.
Was he probing, or did he have other motives?
He smiled and said, "Secretary Lewis, we must trust the organization. I also believe that no matter what the truth of this matter is, the organization will give us a satisfactory answer."
As soon as those grandiose words were said.
Caroline gave a slight smile.
She said, "Dirk, the reason I brought you here today is precisely because of this matter. If you believe my words, then I can tell you that since Magistrate Tate died, Secretary Lewis has been investigating the truth, and that missing phone has already been found by Secretary Lewis."
"What?"
Dirk Carter exclaimed in shock.
He stood up immediately.
He looked at Donald Lewis in disbelief.
He saw Donald Lewis nod.
He reached into his pocket.
And took out a clear plastic bag.
In the bag was a phone that had been broken.
Dirk Carter recognized it immediately because it was the birthday gift he had given Dylan Tate a year ago.
After Dylan Tate committed suicide.
His phone had been missing.
The investigation team had asked Dirk Carter about the phone, but he genuinely didn't know.
"This phone... where did you find it?"
Dirk Carter took the plastic bag and asked.
"Bridlewood River."
Donald Lewis said.
Dirk Carter shivered and asked, "Bridlewood River? How could his phone end up in Bridlewood River?"
Dylan Tate had jumped to his death.
The location was an abandoned building called "Sunrise Manor."
The location was great, in the heart of the county town, but it had been a stalled project for years after the developer ran away. Dylan Tate jumped from the seventh floor and died instantly.
Bridlewood River was Stillwater County's protective river, about three to four kilometers from Sunrise Manor.
How was that possible?
Something still didn't add up.
Dirk Carter put down the phone.
Asked, "Secretary Lewis, there's one thing I don't quite understand. Everyone thinks Dylan Tate committed suicide. Why do you insist his death was suspicious?"
"Because on the night he died, he had drinks with me."
When Dirk Carter heard Donald Lewis say that, he froze.
The two of them were drinking together?
If this gets out, who would believe it?
It seemed Donald Lewis saw Dirk Carter's disbelief.
He sighed and said, "You probably don't believe what I'm saying, right? But if I told you that these four years in Stillwater County were my happiest years, and that Dylan Tate and I were very close friends in secret, would you believe it?"
Unbelievable!
Definitely unbelievable!
Dirk Carter shook his head honestly.
Donald Lewis smiled slightly and said, "It's normal that you don't believe it. I'm afraid even if I told this, no one in the world would believe it..."
After somewhat nostalgically finishing this sentence, Donald Lewis said, "Let me tell you a story. This story, if you count back, starts seven years ago..."
Seven years ago.
Ardmore City had only two districts.
One was Florin District, now the location of the Municipal Government, also the political center.
The other was Lakeshore District, now Ardmore City's commercial center, where most shopping centers and malls are concentrated.
To promote industrial development.
Ardmore City decided to establish a new administrative district as an industrial center.
They set aside land from the neighboring counties, Florin District, and Lakeshore District, forming Novara District.
The first District Committee Secretary was Kelton Levin, then a member of the Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor.
Hearing the name Kelton Levin.
Dirk Carter asked, "Is it Kelton Levin, the current Mayor?"
Donald Lewis nodded and said, "That's him."
The first District Committee Secretary was Kelton Levin.
And the first District Magistrate was Donald Lewis.
The two worked together; Kelton Levin mainly focused on building organizational units, and Donald Lewis was in charge of attracting investment. Less than a year later, Novara District had many infrastructures, factories, and residential areas springing up.
On this land, there was prosperity everywhere; everyone knew that the establishment of Novara District would inject new vitality into Ardmore City and significantly boost Ardmore City's GDP.
At that time, Donald Lewis was full of enthusiasm.
He poured almost all his energy into this land.
In his own words, he hadn't spent a decent day with his daughter for the entire year.
But who would have thought that the series of events that followed would shatter his dream completely.
