A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 127: The Vanguard

The entwined dragons, inseparable.

Dirk Carter had numerous "favored" women, each with their own charm.

Maeve Winters was bold and daring. After Dirk opened the door to her desires, she was always eager to try new things, the bravest among all women.

Catherine Sawyer was gentle and considerate, meticulous, and took great care of Dirk, unconditionally obedient to his commands.

Sierra Vincent was unique and lived on the edge of the unconventional.

Zoey Moss was quite alluring, more like an all-around big sister.

Rose and Ewan Forrest, the two sisters, were vastly different in personality. One was naturally cold, the other inherently lively. When it came to the bedroom, Dirk preferred Rose.

There's no need to mention Corinne Quance, who possessed all the qualities that could captivate a man.

As for Caroline Lynch, she was probably the one with the strongest desires among all women.

It's said that a woman over thirty can absorb the earth while sitting.

In this aspect, Caroline Lynch was a representative figure.

After tasting the "delights" on Dirk, she became insatiable. Although she still performed routine duties with her husband, it felt bland, mostly just going through the motions.

It's often said that women have a sixth sense.

But don't men have it too?

Caroline Lynch's husband was Alvin Crawford.

He was the head of the Rural Commercial Bank of Stillwater County.

He was usually very busy with work.

Some time ago, his wife seemed to be under some spell, demanding almost every night, and sometimes several times a night, leaving him exhausted.

But recently, especially in the past two months.

Caroline suddenly cooled down towards him.

She hardly initiated anything anymore.

When he needed it, she was perfunctory.

That was the least of it.

What was more, recently, he noticed his wife often glowing with radiance, a clear sign of regular satisfaction.

Alvin began to realize that Caroline might be cheating.

This business trip lasted half a month.

One would expect that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but last night, Caroline didn't come home. Instead, she called to say she was staying at the office dormitory.

This made him even more flustered.

He didn't even bother going to work in the morning, rushing to the county government.

"Director Crawford, Director Crawford, Executive Hughes is discussing business inside, you can't go in."

Seeing Alvin forcing his way into the office.

Rhea Yancy tried her best to block him.

Alvin paid her no mind, pushing straight to the office door, and entered without knocking.

Inside the office.

Caroline Lynch was properly dressed, reviewing documents, while Dirk Carter stood there with hands at his sides, looking as if he was reporting work.

"What brings you here?"

Caroline frowned and asked.

"Who is he?"

Seeing a handsome young stranger, Alvin's jealousy flared up.

"Comrade Dirk Carter, introduce yourself."

Caroline said with a stern face.

Dirk nodded slightly and said, "Hello, I'm Dirk Carter, Section Chief of the Secretary 1 Department in the County Office and also the Secretary to Secretary Donal Lewis."

The County Committee Secretary's Secretary?

Hearing this position.

Alvin immediately, awkwardly shook Dirk's hand and said, "Secretary Carter, sorry, I didn't realize it was you earlier, please forgive me. I'm Alvin Crawford, head of the Rural Commercial Bank."

"Oh? Director Crawford, hello, hello."

Dirk quickly replied.

"Old Crawford, I have some matters to discuss. Either you go out, or I do."

Caroline said seriously.

Alvin didn't dare to offend, quickly saying, "You discuss, you discuss, I'll step outside."

With that.

He followed Rhea Yancy out the door.

As soon as the door closed.

Caroline quickly let out a sigh of relief.

Knowing they were just entangled moments ago, the sound from outside led her to hastily throw on her coat without even buttoning it, more to cover her modesty on the desk. Any small slip, and everything inside would be exposed.

It would have been hard to explain otherwise.

"Director Crawford came to catch adultery?"

Dirk asked.

Caroline glanced at the door and said, "Ignore him, lately he's been paranoid. If it gets too much, I'll just divorce him. It's not like he ever cares about the family anyway."

Dirk became anxious upon hearing this.

Taking a step forward, he said, "Executive Hughes, you absolutely cannot get a divorce right now."

"Why not?"

"Let me ask you, if you divorce Director Crawford, what's the reason?"

Dirk asked.

Caroline thought for a moment and said, "What else could it be? Marital discord. He thinks I don't know about his adventures outside. Why does he get to cheat, but we women can't?"

"Marital discord? You must remember, you are a woman. If you divorce over emotional issues, there's only one possibility, that one of you cheated, either you or him. Right now, you're in a career upswing. A divorce now could negatively impact your professional path."

"I don't care, it's whatever. Honestly, I don't have any big ambitions."

Caroline said.

Dirk moved in front of Caroline, pulling her into his arms, saying, "Ambition is secondary. Reputation is important. If you divorce him now, your reputation will suffer. If you miss me, you can come to me, but divorce is not an option."

"Dirk..."

Hearing these words.

Caroline's throat choked up.

Leaning against Dirk's abdomen, she murmured, "You're so good. Sometimes I really want to divorce him without looking back. I know I can't become your woman, but what you've said today made me realize a lot. You're right, I shouldn't sacrifice the big picture over something small."

After speaking.

She said to Dirk, "You should go back, or Secretary Lewis might look for you."

Dirk nodded.

Gently patting her head.

He said, "Talk to him properly; keep the bigger picture in mind."

"Alright, I will."

Caroline nodded obediently.

Back at the County Committee building.

Donal Lewis just happened to appear at the entrance.

The two exchanged a nod and walked in together.

"How did things go while I was away?"

As soon as the office door closed, Donal Lewis couldn't wait to ask.

Dirk nodded and said, "According to the plan, everything has been dealt with."

"Good, it seems I chose the right person, but mere support from Deputy Secretary Augustus Hendrix isn't enough. Our numbers on this side can't reach half of the standing committee. I've heard that lately Sherman Summers hasn't been idle either."

Indeed.

The current side had four people.

Besides Donal, there was Deputy Secretary Augustus Hendrix; Executive Vice County Mayor Caroline Lynch, and Minister of Organization Alfie Grant.

Even though they were significant figures, it wasn't enough for a strong advantage in the standing committee.

Dirk thought for a moment and asked, "Is Clifford Levin from the County Office Director your ally or Sherman Summers'?"

Donal pondered for a moment.

He said, "Clifford Levin is a weasel. Ever since Sherman Summers took the position, he's been playing both sides, closely related to him. Even during Dylan Tate's time, it was the same. Do you know why I've frequently changed secretaries over the years? It's because those secretaries were all Clifford Levin's people. I didn't want to be monitored, so I resorted to this."

"Since Clifford Levin is Sherman Summers' errand runner, things are much easier."

Dirk said, rubbing his chin.

Donal asked, "What are you planning to do?"

Dirk mysteriously smiled and said, "I don't need to do anything. Clifford Levin will make a move. At that time, all the leadership needs to do is to cooperate and put on a show. Since Sherman Summers wants to stay out of it, we'll force him back in."

"What if he prefers sacrificing Clifford Levin to make an appearance?"

Donal asked with some concern.

Dirk smiled confidently and said, "Then all the better. We will catch the tiger by the ears, first cutting off all his spies around us, turning him blind."

Donal nodded and smiled, "Dirk, Dirk, you're playing a big chess game. In this game, even one wrong move, and we're both finished."

"Dad, who are you playing chess with again?"

No sooner were the words said.

The slightly ajar door was pushed open.

A youthful and beautiful girl walked in.
