A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 264: Deadly Flaw

Dirk Carter smiled and said, "Executive Director Dixon, are you sure you want me to say it here?"

In the office at this moment.

Besides Caden Dixon, there were others present.

Caden Dixon pondered for a while and then said, "Everyone else leave, I want to have a few words with Comrade Dirk Carter."

After the others filed out.

Caden Dixon sat down, lit a cigarette, and said, "Go ahead."

Even though Dirk Carter wore handcuffs, he sat in front of Caden Dixon with neither humility nor arrogance.

He said, "It seems I wasn't wrong, Executive Director Dixon, you were the one fueling the fires behind Charlotte Ramey's case."

Caden Dixon remained impassive, neither admitting nor denying, then paused and said, "What's your reasoning?"

"The reason is simple. From the moment I started at the Education Bureau, Executive Director Dixon, you have been continuously making things difficult for me. That's the reason."

"Haha, isn't your reason a bit far-fetched?"

Caden Dixon said.

Dirk Carter smiled slightly and said, "Executive Director Dixon is a person who understands the importance of timing. County Chief Simon Lewis genuinely dislikes people like me who cause 'trouble,' so on the surface, it seems you were aligning with County Chief Lewis's wishes by suppressing me. There should have been no loophole in this. However, Executive Director Dixon, you overlooked a critical issue."

"Oh? Go ahead and explain."

Caden Dixon said.

Dirk Carter said, "After the Yorke Payne incident was exposed, the Public Security Bureau issued a brief lockdown order. I've always wondered who actually issued it. You might say it was Yorke Payne, but he doesn't have that much power. You might say it was Charlotte Ramey, but that seems unlikely too. That leaves only Warren Young and Simon Lewis. However, facts later proved these two were not involved. This leaves only one possible person, and that's you, Executive Director Dixon."

"Why would I do such a thing?"

Caden Dixon asked.

Dirk Carter said, "It's simple. After the Yorke Payne incident, you must have thought he would retaliate against me. As long as he really retaliated, the matter would escalate beyond control, and you would naturally benefit from it. After all, with Charlotte Ramey and Yorke Payne out of the picture, you are the biggest beneficiary. From any angle, you stand to gain greatly as the Executive Deputy County Chief."

Caden Dixon remained silent.

He continued to smoke.

After a moment.

He looked at Dirk Carter and said, "Go on."

By this time, Dirk Carter had already figured it out in his mind.

He said, "After Yorke Payne and Rand Quance were ousted, Executive Director Dixon immediately had your man, Yannick Summers, take over as Deputy Director. It's obvious that the intention was to have Yannick Summers take over the benefits of the education system. Next, you just needed to cooperate with me to blow things up. The downfall of Charlotte Ramey was also within your expectations. After Charlotte Ramey's death, someone would inevitably have to take the blame for issues in the education system. It could be either Warren Young or Simon Lewis. If either of them were transferred, you could step up further. If I'm not mistaken, this was your original plan, right?"

Seeing that Caden Dixon still didn't speak.

Dirk Carter continued, "According to the original plan, after Charlotte Ramey's downfall, I would definitely be retaliated against by the person behind Charlotte Ramey. This way, Yannick Summers could smoothly take over the Education Bureau. But you had not anticipated that the person behind Charlotte Ramey didn't take action. What man proposes, God disposes. After Charlotte Ramey's death, Yannick Summers was suppressed by me and couldn't control the situation. Although Simon Lewis did get transferred, the successor was not you. So, after all that effort, you got nothing out of it."

"Haha, Dirk Carter, I must say your imagination is truly rich."

Caden Dixon sneered.

Dirk Carter also smiled slightly.

He said, "Executive Director Dixon, I'm not finished yet, so don't interrupt me."

"Originally, with the situation developing to this point, even if you didn't profit, it could have been concluded. But nobody expected a new wave at a critical moment. The person behind Charlotte Ramey, in order to advance, started reshuffling all who were in the know in Kenton County. He would inevitably send a very capable person to handle this, conducting a secret investigation into the 108 major case. I'm doomed, that's needless to say. Your role in this will eventually be seen through as well. In such circumstances, you sense the crisis and naturally need to find someone to rely on."

"The person behind Charlotte Ramey chose Kelton Levin as his representative. Under these circumstances, the only option for you is to side with Kelton Levin. By serving him well, you can avoid disaster."

"That big shot hates me to the core, so naturally, Kelton Levin wants to eliminate me. In that case, your actions against me to show loyalty are perfectly justified, aren't they?"

Boom!

Like a thunderbolt on a clear day.

Caden Dixon froze on the spot.

The reason he was stunned.

Is because all of Dirk Carter's analysis was exactly what he had in mind.

Thinking his tricks were well-concealed, he was surprised that Dirk Carter had already seen through them.

After calming down a bit.

Caden Dixon said, "Dirk Carter, you are truly smart. But, hasn't anyone ever told you that being smart isn't always good?"

"Many have told me."

Dirk Carter said.

Caden Dixon sneered, "Even if you see through the whole scenario, what can you change?"

"I can!"

Dirk Carter responded.

Caden Dixon burst into laughter.

He said, "Can you? Aren't you a bit overconfident? Do you really think your eloquence can dissolve a rape charge?"

Dirk Carter glanced at the clock on the wall.

He said, "It's about time for them to arrive."

"Them? Who's 'them'?"

Caden Dixon was taken aback and asked.

Knock, knock, knock.

There was a knocking at the door.

Dirk Carter smiled with certainty and said, "Speak of the devil, and the devil appears. My reinforcements are here."

Without waiting for Caden Dixon's agreement.

The door creaked open, and Atticus Quinn's head peeked in, looking worriedly and said, "Executive Director Dixon, someone from the city is here."

"From the city? Who came?"

Caden Dixon's heart skipped a beat.

Before Atticus Quinn could answer.

The door was pushed open.

A man in an administrative jacket, appearing to be in his thirties with slicked-back hair, walked straight in.

The man was about six feet tall, handsome and well-dressed.

As soon as he entered.

Caden Dixon suddenly stood up from the sofa in panic and asked, "Secretary Brock, what brings you here?"

What made a secretary make Caden Dixon so apprehensive?

Because he wasn't an ordinary secretary; he was the chief of Section One at the Municipal Committee Office, the secretary to Municipal Committee Secretary Conway Sawyer, Brock Walsh.

The so-called first secretary of the Municipal Committee.

Brock Walsh glanced briefly at Dirk Carter, then at the handcuffs on his wrists.

"Executive Director Dixon, what does this mean?"

Brock Walsh pointed at Dirk Carter's handcuffs and asked.

Caden Dixon immediately gestured for Vincent Eames at the door to come in.

After Vincent Eames explained the situation.

Brock Walsh asked, "Captain Eames, is the evidence conclusive?"

"Conclusive. We found the victim's underwear at Dirk Carter's house, with the victim's bodily fluids on it, which is sufficient evidence...."

Before he could finish speaking.

Brock Walsh interrupted him and asked again, "Captain Eames, let me ask you again, is the evidence conclusive? If it's not, then it's a false accusation."

"I assure Secretary Brock, the evidence is conclusive."

Vincent Eames said confidently.

Brock Walsh frowned and asked, "Assure? As a police officer, is your assurance enough? Where's the lab report?"

Even with Brock Walsh questioning him.

Vincent Eames remained completely unfazed.

He said, "The laboratory work has already begun."

Brock Walsh then turned to politics and law committee secretary Troy Kane, asking, "Secretary Kane, making an arrest without conclusive evidence, and the other party is the bureau chief of the Education Bureau. Is this how your Public Security Bureau handles cases? I think you might be unfit for your role as the politics and law committee secretary, right?"

Troy Kane swallowed and was about to explain when Vincent Eames boldly said, "Secretary Brock, this decision was mine alone, it has nothing to do with Secretary Kane."

"Good, quite responsible of you. Haven't you considered what to do if you've arrested the wrong person?"

Brock Walsh asked.

Vincent Eames stood tall and said, "If I've arrested the wrong person, I will personally apologize to Dirk Carter."

"Apologize? If this is the second time for a wrongful arrest, then it's not just about an apology, but about you, Captain Eames, abusing your power and seeking personal vendettas, isn't it?"

Brock Walsh said.
