A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 49: Precise Control

The two people in the meeting room were chatting animatedly.

Those waiting outside were getting increasingly anxious.

Colette Wagner's praise only lasted about a minute.

But Dirk Carter had been in the meeting room for over an hour.

Several leaders gathered in Dougray Hayes' office, especially Adair Meyer, who was too restless to sit down and kept walking back and forth.

"Director Meyer, maybe I should go eavesdrop at the meeting room door to hear what they're talking about?"

The office director, Hubert Tanner, suggested.

"You're not allowed to go. If Secretary Hughes sees you, she'll have your hide,"

Adair Meyer scolded, leaving Hubert Tanner too afraid to move.

While everyone was plotting their own schemes,

a cadre pushed open the door and announced, "Secretary Hughes has already left."

"What? Left? Did she say anything?"

Adair Meyer asked anxiously.

The cadre scratched his head and said, "She didn't say anything. It was Deputy Carter who escorted her to the door. But I saw that Secretary Hughes seemed very happy, smiling all the way. Before she left, she whispered something in Deputy Carter's ear."

"Whispered in his ear? Are you sure you didn't see it wrong?"

Hubert Tanner asked with a shiver.

The cadre shook his head and said, "I'm sure I saw it right."

This news made everyone present feel a complex mix of emotions.

Everyone came to one conclusion.

Dirk Carter had a close relationship with Dahlia Hughes.

With such a strong backing, it's no wonder Dirk Carter dared to confront Gilroy Thompson as soon as he reported in. It didn't seem strange after all.

"Hmph! Dirk Carter, no matter what backing you have, if you anger Caleb Ford, even the emperor himself won't save you."

This incident made everyone see Dirk Carter in a more favorable light.

Except for Adair Meyer, whose desire to remove Dirk Carter was growing stronger.

Originally, the Gilroy Thompson incident was only verbally praised for Dirk Carter and Colette Wagner.

But the next day,

The county disciplinary committee issued a notice, commending those who made outstanding contributions to the Gilroy Thompson case.

Besides these two people, the case handler Lauren Radford was also included.

Receiving this news left Alfie Grant rather puzzled.

Although the case was not small, with quite a high value involved, it didn't seem to warrant commendation from the disciplinary committee.

He was thinking of calling to find out more about the situation.

When suddenly, the phone on the table rang without warning.

"Is this Minister Grant?"

A voice on the phone asked.

Alfie Grant replied, "Yes, it is."

"Minister Grant, Deputy Director Dirk Carter from the Work Safety Administration said he has an appointment with you. Is that correct?"

"Who?"

"Dirk Carter, Deputy Director Dirk Carter from the Work Safety Administration."

The voice repeated over the phone.

So Dirk Carter really did come looking for him?

It had been several days since Calvert Grant was taken away by Dirk Carter, and Kian Holden couldn't find out any information, leaving Alfie Grant anxious for some time now.

He originally thought Dirk Carter would come looking quickly.

But it dragged on for nearly a week.

"Yes, I did make an appointment with him. Let him come up."

After hanging up, Alfie Grant still felt a sense of chaos inside.

For years, he had been projecting an image of a harmonious family to the public. He was even awarded "Five Good Families" by the city's Women's Federation last year. But if news of him ordering his nephew to sexually assault his wife were to break, the collapse of his persona would be minor compared to the possible criminal responsibility he might face.

Moreover, in recent days,

Zoey Moss's attitude towards him underwent a complete 180-degree turn.

Clearly, she had found out something.

Their marriage was just a façade. If Zoey Moss were to expose this, it would be a personal disaster for him.

"Knock, knock, knock."

The door was knocked.

"Come in!"

Alfie Grant said these words, his heart pounding uncontrollably.

"Minister Grant, am I disturbing you?"

Dirk Carter asked with a nod and smile.

"Ah, it's you, Dirk. Come, sit, come inside."

Alfie Grant personally got up and led Dirk Carter to the sofa.

Then he busied himself at the tea table.

Dirk Carter wasn't in a hurry either, and after Alfie Grant brought over a cup of tea, he said, "Minister Grant, I came by today because I wanted to ask for your help with something."

"Ah, Dirk, didn't we talk about this last time? In private, you can just call me Brother."

"Hehe." Dirk Carter chuckled awkwardly.

"Dirk, go ahead, what is it?"

"There's a deputy director at the Anti-Corruption Bureau of the Prosecutor's Office named Lauren Radford. She made a contribution in the Gilroy Thompson case, and I want to ask you to help transfer her to work at the disciplinary committee."

"The disciplinary committee? Dirk, I'm afraid this is beyond my ability. Although I'm in charge of organizational matters, the disciplinary committee side still needs Secretary Hughes's approval."

Alfie Grant said with some difficulty.

Dirk waved his hand and said, "Brother, I've already spoken with Secretary Hughes about it, and she has agreed. It's just the organizational side of things..."

Spoken to?

And she's already agreed?

This Dirk Carter, how did he get involved with Dahlia Hughes again?

With this thought, Alfie Grant inhaled sharply.

It seemed Dirk Carter's background wasn't as simple as he thought.

If he really wanted to make a move against him, it wouldn't be easy.

After a pause, he said, "Alright, since Secretary Hughes has no objections, it's my job to handle it. Dirk, don't worry, I'll take care of this for you. However..."

Seeing Alfie Grant's expression of wanting to speak but hesitating,

Dirk understood.

He said, "Oh, brother, I heard from my sister-in-law that your nephew has been missing for a while? Coincidentally, I happened to run into him on the road. The young man said he wanted to stay at my place for a few days. I hope you don't mind?"

"No problem, certainly no problem. Dirk, don't worry. I'll handle the matter you mentioned right away."

In any showdown,

it's always just a few moves.

Calvert Grant was currently in Dirk Carter's hands, and he didn't seem to intend to release him.

This showed that Dirk Carter meant to tighten his grip on Alfie Grant.

Alfie Grant, though well aware, had no choice but to accept it.

Leaving the County Committee compound,

Dirk Carter received a call from Maeve Winters.

She wanted him to stop by the county library.

She said she had something to discuss with him.

Since taking office at the Work Safety Administration, Dirk Carter indeed hadn't met Maeve Winters again. Thinking it might have to do with developments in Darian Brooks's case, Dirk Carter didn't delay and quickly went over.

Finding Maeve Winters out of breath, Dirk Carter was stunned.

Today, Maeve Winters was wearing a white dress, had a ponytail, with a pair of glasses with no prescription resting on her nose, holding a book, sitting in the window corner.

She looked like a completely different person from her usual style.

Everyone knew Maeve Winters had a naturally innocent-looking face.

Now, dressed like a student, she looked even more ethereal.

People were coming and going in the library, and the students passing by cast envious and admiring glances her way.

Seeing Dirk Carter, Maeve Winters quickly waved him over. After he sat down next to her, he asked, "Did you find anything regarding Darian Brooks?"

"Don't worry about Darian Brooks for now. Give me your hand."

Maeve Winters said.

What the heck?

Dirk Carter extended his hand.

Maeve Winters clasped his wrist, and then, taking his hand, she directly slipped it under her dress.
