A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 50: A Lychee-Flavored Kiss

If it were just empty inside, Dirk Carter wouldn't be so surprised.

After all, once Maeve Winters' body's switch is flipped, it's no wonder outlandish things happen to her.

It's just like a person who's been hungry for five days, inevitably resorting to binge eating.

This is the same thing.

When it comes to playing with thrills, no one matches Maeve Winters.

The moment Dirk Carter touched the mysterious area, he clearly felt a slight vibration.

"You... you're actually playing with a toy here?"

Dirk Carter asked in a suppressed voice, nervously glancing around.

After all, the library is a public place, with quite a few people coming and going.

"Why? Is it not allowed?"

Maeve Winters' face flushed red, she asked matter-of-factly.

"Then why did you call me here?"

"I called you to watch me play with the toy. Isn't it enticing?"

Maeve Winters, as if there were no one else, leaned closer to Dirk Carter's ear and breathed softly.

Truth be told, in this atmosphere, Dirk Carter's body also began to stir.

"Could it really be here?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Maeve Winters raised an eyebrow and asked, "What's wrong with here?"

Then she finished speaking.

She glanced around the room.

Ensuring no one was paying attention to them at the moment.

She suddenly shrank back, diving directly under the table.

Before Dirk Carter realized what she intended to do, her pale, slender hands were already reaching for the zipper.

With a ripping sound, the zipper was pulled open.

Maeve Winters' head leaned in close.

A strong warmth immediately engulfed Dirk Carter.

If it weren't for the constant flow of people nearby, Dirk Carter might have cried out in comfort.

It was an amusing scene.

Dirk Carter sat upright, pretending to read a book, occasionally in deep thought, sometimes frowning, just to disguise his uncontrollable expressions.

The more it was like this.

The more Maeve Winters seemed to enjoy it.

Becoming more and more seductive.

Leaving Dirk Carter holding his breath, his effort to maintain control appeared arduous.

A round concluded.

Maeve Winters crawled out from under the table, casually wiping her mouth, as if nothing had happened, resting her head on her hand, grinning at Dirk Carter.

"Was it fun?"

She asked softly.

Dirk Carter wasn't quite satisfied, but this wasn't the place to let loose; he could only suppress his inner urge, nodding, "It really was quite a thrill."

"So can you remember the lychee-flavored kiss and the library madness?"

Maeve Winters suddenly asked.

Dirk Carter felt a jolt within himself.

He asked, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"

"The city has decided to disband Dylan Tate's special investigation team and terminate the investigation. I also need to return to the city."

"What? So soon?"

This news made Dirk Carter freeze.

Maeve Winters nodded.

She said, "It was meant to be a formality, our city police department got involved just because Rardin Grant's parents were making a fuss, needing closure. Now that Darian Brooks has confessed it was Dylan Tate who told him to do it, the matter must draw to a close, so I'm being transferred back to the city bureau."

Dirk Carter's heart suddenly sank to the bottom of the lake.

Truth be told, he didn't believe Darian Brooks' confession.

But disbelief aside, Maeve Winters had been investigating for days and truly found no more discoveries.

Seeing Dirk Carter's expression this way.

Maeve Winters said, "Don't worry, although the task force has been disbanded, I will still take time to investigate Darian Brooks' case. I won't forget what you tasked me with."

"Maeve..."

Those words moved Dirk Carter.

He paused and asked, "When are you leaving? I'll see you off!"

Maeve Winters smiled slightly, pointing outside with her finger, "I received orders to report immediately, but after thinking it over, I can't let you forget me. After all, the greatest joys of my life were given by you."

"Ardmore City and Stillwater County aren't far apart; whenever I have time, I can visit you, or you can visit me."

Dirk Carter comforted.

Maeve Winters gave a faint smile.

She suddenly embraced Dirk Carter's head and said, "Let me give you another lychee-flavored kiss."

Upon finishing.

The warm lips pressed against his.

Entwined like two snakes, it was indeed lychee-flavored.

Drawing gazes from people within the library.

Especially from those guys, who cast looks of envy, jealousy, and resentment at Dirk Carter.

After the kiss ended.

Maeve Winters waved goodbye.

Watching her car disappear from sight, for some reason, a corner of his heart felt inexplicably empty.

It's okay, they would meet again.

Dirk Carter assured himself.

The special investigation team was disbanded.

This meant that all the crises caused by Dylan Tate's death were resolved for him.

The result wasn't ideal.

But for Dirk Carter, there were only upsides, no downsides.

After all, the person he next needed to deal with was Caleb Ford; he had to travel lightly.

The reason he hadn't sought out Caleb Ford this time was due to Tim Bates' news that Caleb Ford himself hadn't been in Stillwater County lately; rather than pursue petty minions at the construction site, it was better to "capture the leader first to catch the bandits" and resolve the issue in one strike.

So, he was waiting for Caleb Ford to return.

He had no idea at the moment.

That a bloody net had already been cast around him.

And it was precisely this net that led Dirk Carter to experience the most perilous confrontation since entering politics.

At nine in the evening.

At the entrance of a certain hotel.

Adair Meyer staggered out of the entrance after attending a drinking party, with his subordinate helping him catch a taxi.

Sitting inside the taxi, Adair Meyer was drowsy.

Suddenly, the car stopped on an empty road.

Adair Meyer was somewhat bewildered.

He glanced out the window and asked, "Driver, this isn't the road to my house, is it?"

The driver's gaze fixed straight ahead, suddenly saying darkly, "Director Meyer, someone wants to have a word with you."

This inexplicable remark instantly sobered Adair Meyer.

Just as he hadn't figured out what was going on, the rear car door was opened.

A figure darted inside.

Startling Adair Meyer.

On an instinct, he tried to pull the car door open, only to realize it was locked from outside.

"Director Meyer, no need to be so nervous, no one will harm you."

After saying this in a breezy tone, the person sat down.

Only then did Adair Meyer rub his eyes, and upon recognizing the person beside him, frowned and said, "Deputy County Head Vincent, isn't this rather impolite of you?"

Indeed.

The person who had come in was none other than Shane Vincent.

Shane Vincent gave a slight smile and said, "Director Meyer, I have something for you to look at; you might not find it so rude then."

Saying that.

He reached over to the driver.

The driver took an envelope out of the console and handed it to him.

Then.

Shane Vincent handed the envelope over to Adair Meyer.

Adair Meyer, somewhat dubious, accepted the envelope, and upon opening it, found a heap of photos inside.

After just one glance at the photos, the anger that had lingered on his face vanished completely, and instead, he took a few sharp breaths.
