Monsters, humans, and nature were not the only threats that filled the Great Lands. Everything that existed in the lesser worlds was gathered here in separate fragments. One thing was here, another was there, but never all together, and with the arrival of energy, the situation did not change.
In a simple glade, there could be an object that could be either a salvation, a treasure chest, or a catastrophe.
These were the Remnants. Sometimes they could activate of their own accord to protect themselves or their territory, but more often than not it happened because of direct contact with another creature's energy.
Liam didn't know that. He was simply following his curiosity, and it was hard to blame him for that. However, now his actions had put everyone else in danger. Dealing with the Remnant, or more precisely, its guard, was no easy task.
"Hey, you better tell us what's going on here before it's too late!" Kreyn exclaimed as the Remnant Guard formed.
Judith clenched her fists.
"The Remnants. As the name suggests, they are the remains of powerful monsters that have become separate entities under the influence of energy. They contain a large amount of energy, but to protect themselves, they have guards. We see one of them right in front of us."
'I see.' Kreyn nodded inwardly. 'Is it something like a mine, or is it a trap chest? It seems that the Remnants are valuable, though dangerous.'
"Guys..." Liam muttered. "Maybe we should run away?"
Strangely enough, Judith didn't immediately dismiss the idea — it was possible.
The Remnants weren't afraid to go into battle and defend their energy, but their area of influence was quite limited. If someone got far enough away, the Remnant Guard wouldn't be able to reach them. That was the main weakness of the Remnants.
Judith turned to Kreyn and Daren.
"What do you want to do?"
Kreyn grinned, glaring at the horned skull.
"As I understand it, to win, we need to destroy this guard, but what will we get in the end?" He glanced at Judith. "You are more experienced than we are. Do you think the battle against a Remnant is worth it?"
She could've lied, and they would've run away, but Kreyn's greedy look was enough to make her forget that option because she was the same.
"Of course. High-risk, high-reward, ever heard of that?"
Tremble!
At the same moment, the guard stamped his foot as everyone saw his appearance.
Before them stood a three-meter-tall knight in dark blue armor covered with dark chains. His helmet had two straight horns, just like the Remnant's. His weapon was a heavy, broken two-handed sword that the Remnant Guard easily held with one hand.
"Alright, looks like that golem was just a warm-up."
Kreyn grinned, staring intently at the two blue eyes peeking out from under the Remnant Guard's helmet.
THRUST!
Without hesitation, the Remnant Guard stepped forward and thrust his sword into the ground.
The chains covering his body were engulfed in blue flames as lines of fire shot out into the distance, forming a circle around them.
Judith's lips curved upward.
"Hah, decided to lock us inside the arena? Smart move, but it won't help you!"
As before, Judith attacked first. It was a role she had long been accustomed to. But the Remnant Guard was a serious threat, and everyone had to act.
WHISTLE!
With a piercing whistle, two ghostly wolves appeared next to Daren. At the wave of his hand, they lunged forward in a purple flame.
"I'll help too!" Liam exclaimed as the tattoo on his arm glowed brightly.
He usually used his energy to create protective barriers, something he had a lot of experience with, but that wasn't all his Catalyst was capable of.
His energy curved into a crescent shape, which he launched like a projectile straight into the Remnant Guard.
This attack was nowhere near as powerful as Kreyn's Nuclear Blast, but it was a start.
"Grhooo!" The Remnant Guard roared as he blocked the projectile with his sword.
A flash of flame streaked past his right side, forcing him to turn.
"I'm here!" Judith exclaimed, delivering a blazing kick to the guard.
Unlike the Crystal Golem, who collapsed to his knees, the Remnant Guard withstood her strike as if he expected it.
"Agh?"
Judith blinked in disbelief as the Remnant Guard's hand tightened around her waist. The grip grew stronger, causing Judith's face to contort in sharp pain.
The phantom wolves dug into the Remnant Guard's wrist, attempting to tear through his armor. One scrap after another, they drew closer to the flesh until the first drop spilled.
"GRRROOO!!!"
The Remnant Guard growled, throwing the wolves aside and Judith to the ground.
All this time, Kreyn stood aside, not because he was afraid, but because he understood his role in their formation.
Only he possessed the powerful explosive force that, when delivered to the right place at the right time, could change the course of the battle and lead them to victory. It was nothing more than a strategy.
"Shit!" Judith hit the ground and looked at Kreyn. "Are you going to help or not, you bastard?!"
Fortunately for Kreyn, he wasn't the only one who understood his role in the team.
Click.
Daren brought the cigarette to the flame of the lighter, taking his first drag.
"Boss, if you need me to, I can create a moment. I'll buy you some time, a few seconds, but no more than that."
"Hmm?" Kreyn raised an eyebrow. "Can your wolves do that? The Norx Type is useful, but it doesn't look like they can handle this thing."
"Just tell me whether I should do it or not." Daren exhaled a cloud of smoke.
After a few moments, Kreyn nodded.
"Go on. Buy me some time if you can."
"Got it."
Daren tossed his cigarette and grabbed the fang hanging from his neck. With a calm gaze, he plunged the fang straight into his chest as the two wolves stopped abruptly and turned into two bright flashes, returning to Daren.
A vivid light ran from his chest to his head as his black hair flared with purple flames, as did his eyes, and ghostly claws covered his hands.
The point was that even after seeing Judith in battle, Kreyn still didn't know about all the Catalyst Types. One of the ones unknown to him was right in front of him.
