Chapter 723: Chapter 723: Fighting Master (5)
Once a malicious thought takes hold, it often spirals out of control.
Laura White immediately saw Susan Caldwell as an ally. That very night, she went to find Susan, and the two came to an agreement.
That’s how the rumors that followed began. The gossip wouldn’t have been nearly as effective with just Susan Caldwell acting alone. But when the rumors started, she, as Vera Xavier’s roommate, stepped forward and "confirmed" they were all true. That was the only reason they were able to spread across the entire campus.
The people spreading the rumors even felt justified. The reason was simple: Vera Xavier’s own roommate had said it.
Because of this, more and more people believed the rumors, and Vera Xavier’s reputation on campus plummeted.
A cold light filled Vera Xavier’s eyes. ’I really underestimated Laura White,’ she thought. ’To think she was so scheming and manipulative, and even managed to come up with such a self-righteous excuse in the end.’
She had always known there was a certain type of person in the world—people who believe they are the embodiment of justice, that everything they do is right. The moment someone proves to be more capable or stronger than them, they just can’t take it.
Fundamentally, Susan Caldwell and Laura White were both that type of person.
But Laura White always appeared so cold and aloof. And because Nathaniel Nathan, Winter Sullivan, and Shirley Forrest were all the same way, Vera had always believed that people with icy exteriors actually had upright, passionate hearts. As it turned out, she was wrong.
She looked at Laura White. "I’m starting to regret explaining everything to you today. I thought if we just cleared the air, everything would be fine. But now I see. From the moment you decided to turn on me, you were already planning on running me out of this school."
Laura White just smiled coldly, saying nothing more.
Hearing this, Shirley Ewing and Fiona Wright finally understood the gist of the situation. They had only ever thought Laura White was difficult to get along with; they never imagined she could be so calculating and so unable to tolerate anyone else’s success.
Secretary Archer shot a sideways glance at Vera Xavier. "Miss, why are you wasting your breath on these hicks? In any case, the mistake they’ve made today is more than enough to get them expelled."
He finished with a slight lift of his chin, his sense of superiority on full display.
Just then, the Dean of Students finally hung up the phone. Secretary Archer said arrogantly, "Dean, what are you waiting for? Expel them all!"
Laura White looked at Vera. "Vera Xavier, I’ll give you one last chance. I know you aren’t scared for yourself, but Fiona Wright and Shirley Ewing are going to be expelled because of you. Can you live with that? All you have to do is sacrifice yourself, and they’ll be allowed to stay."
In the grand scheme of things, their feud wasn’t that serious. In Laura’s mind, there was no need to be so ruthless. Vera, however, did not agree with this line of reasoning.
Vera Xavier looked at her and asked, "Does destroying me make you this happy?"
"It’s satisfying enough," Laura White said slowly. "I have always been the best. It has to be that way, no matter where I am."
After speaking, she glanced at Secretary Archer, who said arrogantly, "Dean, go draw up the expulsion papers!"
The Dean glanced at him, his expression darkening slightly. He then turned to look at Vera Xavier. Her lips were pressed into a thin line, and her entire demeanor was cold.
His gaze deepened. Without a word, he opened a cabinet, pulled out the expulsion forms, sat down at his desk, and began to write out the names.
