Chapter 770: Chapter 377: Just a Bunch of Small Fry
The surrounding scenery grew even more desolate. Not even a single plant could be seen, only endless yellow sand and gravel.
Suddenly, the hovercar came to a stop.
"What’s wrong?"
Li Chang’an asked.
"Captain, there’s someone up ahead!"
Bai Lin said, pointing forward.
Li Chang’an looked ahead and saw a group of figures in the distance.
Their attire was a mismatched collection; some wore tattered clothes, others crude armor. They held various weapons in their hands, looking like a ragtag mob.
"Looks like a group of mercenaries!"
Shen Qiuyue said.
"Mercenaries? What are they doing out here?"
Sun Yang asked, confused.
"No idea. Let’s observe them first before we do anything."
Li Chang’an said.
The hovercar slowly approached the group of mercenaries.
The mercenaries noticed the hovercar’s approach as well. They all turned their heads, watching them warily.
"Stop the car!"
A man who looked like their leader shouted.
The hovercar stopped, and Li Chang’an and the others stepped out.
The mercenary leader walked up to them, his hostile gaze sizing them up.
"Who are you people? What are you doing here?"
the mercenary leader asked, his tone vicious.
"We’re from the Interstellar Warrior Corps, on orders to patrol the border!"
Li Chang’an replied.
"Interstellar Warrior Corps? Patrolling?"
The mercenary leader sneered.
"I’d say you’re here looking for trouble, aren’t you?"
"We’re just carrying out our mission. We don’t want any trouble."
Li Chang’an said calmly.
"Don’t want trouble? Then you’d better piss off right now! This isn’t a place for people like you!"
The mercenary leader’s tone grew even more arrogant.
"This area is under the jurisdiction of the Interstellar Warrior Corps. We have the right to patrol here!"
Li Chang’an didn’t yield an inch.
"Jurisdiction? HAHAHA, what a joke! This place has been a total mess for ages. Who gives a damn about your Interstellar Warrior Corps!"
The mercenary leader laughed wildly, and the surrounding mercenaries joined in with jeers.
"So it seems you have no intention of cooperating?"
Li Chang’an’s voice turned icy.
"Cooperate? With a few brats like you? You think you’re worthy of our cooperation?"
The mercenary leader looked at Li Chang’an and his team with contempt.
"Kid, I suggest you know what’s good for you and get lost. Otherwise, don’t blame us for what happens next!"
"What happens next? What exactly do you plan to do?"
Sun Yang couldn’t help but step forward, his tone hostile.
"What do we plan to do? With our numbers, we could tear you to pieces!"
The mercenary leader let out a savage grin and pointed his weapon at Li Chang’an’s group.
"So you want to fight?"
Li Chang’an’s eyes sharpened.
"Fight? HAHAHA, suits me just fine! I’ve been itching to stretch my muscles!"
The mercenary leader let out a roar and was the first to charge.
The other mercenaries followed, launching an attack on Li Chang’an’s squad.
"Watch out!"
Li Chang’an shouted, drawing his Saw Chain Sword.
Han Ruoxi and Shen Qiuyue also prepared for battle.
Sun Yang shouldered his Pulse Gun, while Bai Lin fell back to provide long-range support.
The battle ignited in an instant.
The mercenaries brandished their assorted weapons and charged at Li Chang’an and his team.
The mercenary leader was especially ferocious, rushing straight for Li Chang’an. His Giant Axe whistled through the air as it chopped down toward Li Chang’an’s head.
Li Chang’an’s eyes narrowed. With a flash of movement, he dodged the Giant Axe’s attack.
The Giant Axe missed, slamming heavily into the ground with a deafening crash that made the earth tremble.
His first strike having missed, the mercenary leader immediately retracted his Giant Axe and swung at Li Chang’an again.
Li Chang’an brandished his Saw Chain Sword and engaged the mercenary leader in battle.
The Saw Chain Sword and the Giant Axe collided, producing an ear-piercing screech of metal as sparks flew everywhere.
The mercenary leader was incredibly strong. Every swing of his axe was powerful and heavy, carrying astonishing destructive force.
But Li Chang’an’s Body Technique was agile and his Swordsmanship exquisite. He could always cleverly evade the leader’s attacks and find opportunities to counter.
Han Ruoxi and Shen Qiuyue joined the fray as well, unleashing their Superpower and Sword Skill respectively as they fought the other mercenaries.
Han Ruoxi’s Electric Superpower was immense. Arcs of electricity danced between the mercenaries, leaving them paralyzed.
Shen Qiuyue’s Swordsmanship was exquisite. The glint of her blade flashed like a dance—graceful yet deadly. Every strike precisely hit a mercenary’s vital point.
Sun Yang’s Pulse Gun also played a huge role. Beams of Pulse Energy shot out one after another, sending mercenaries flying.
Meanwhile, Bai Lin provided long-range support from the rear. His light weapon had a high rate of fire and great accuracy, effectively suppressing the mercenaries’ own fire.
The Insect Hunter Squad’s teamwork was seamless. With their formidable combat strength, they quickly gained the upper hand.
Although the mercenaries had superior numbers, their skills were uneven, and they lacked effective organization and coordination. They were no match for the Insect Hunter Squad.
The battle didn’t last long before the mercenaries began to rout, fleeing in disarray.
The mercenary leader was also driven back by one of Li Chang’an’s sword strikes, a deep gash now on his body, blood streaming from it.
"Fall back! Retreat!"
the mercenary leader yelled, turning to flee himself.
Hearing the command, the other mercenaries ran even faster, disappearing into the wasteland in the blink of an eye.
The Insect Hunter Squad didn’t give chase. Instead, they stopped to check their gear.
"Those guys were seriously weak!"
Sun Yang scoffed.
"Don’t get careless. They were just small fry. The real threat is still ahead."
Li Chang’an said.
"The Captain’s right. These mercenaries were just an appetizer. The ones we really need to watch out for are those unknown forces."
Shen Qiuyue said.
"Let’s keep moving. We need to see what’s unusual about this border region."
Li Chang’an said.
"Right!"
The squad members nodded, boarded the hovercar again, and continued deeper into the border region.
The hovercar pressed on.
The surroundings became increasingly desolate.
The wind and sand were so strong they blurred the car’s windows.
"This godforsaken place doesn’t even have a single blade of grass!"
Sun Yang started complaining again.
"This is a wasteland. What did you expect to see?"
Shen Qiuyue’s tone was cold.
"Well, at least a little bit of green would be nice! My eyes are going blurry from staring at all this yellow sand!"
Sun Yang grumbled.
"Shut up, you’re being noisy!"
Shen Qiuyue frowned.
Sun Yang immediately shut his mouth, not daring to say another word.
"Captain, I think we’ve got a situation up ahead!"
Bai Lin said suddenly. His voice was calm, but held a trace of vigilance.
"What is it?"
Li Chang’an asked.
"An energy fluctuation. It’s very faint, but the frequency is strange."
Bai Lin stared at the light screen, his fingers moving quickly over the controls.
"An energy fluctuation? Is it the Insect Race?"
Sun Yang immediately perked up.
"Not the Insect Race. Their energy fluctuations are violent. This one is very stable, but... it’s also very subtle!"
Bai Lin explained.
"Subtle? Could it be the unknown forces?"
Shen Qiuyue guessed.
"It’s possible."
Li Chang’an nodded.
"Bai, can you pinpoint the exact location?"
"Analyzing now. The source of the fluctuation is about three kilometers ahead, and it’s underground!"
Bai Lin replied.
"Underground? You think it’s an underground base?"
Sun Yang said in surprise.
"We can’t rule out that possibility."
Li Chang’an said.
"Stop the car."
Li Chang’an ordered.
The hovercar slowly came to a halt.
"Everyone out. Be careful."
Li Chang’an was the first to exit the hovercar, with the rest of the team following suit.
"Bai, lead the way."
Li Chang’an said.
Bai Lin nodded and marked the direction on his light screen.
"It’s that way, about three kilometers."
Li Chang’an glanced in the indicated direction and led his team forward.
The wind and sand in the wasteland were strong, making it difficult to walk.
The surroundings were completely silent, save for the sound of the howling sand.
"Hey, Captain, do you really think there’s a base here? I’m not seeing anything."
Sun Yang said as he walked, his tone laced with doubt.
"We’ll know if there is or not when we get there."
Li Chang’an’s voice was calm.
"What if it’s a trap?"
Sun Yang asked again.
"A trap? Then let’s see what they’ve got!"
Shen Qiuyue sneered.
"Alright, enough chatter. Focus on moving!"
Li Chang’an cut Sun Yang off.
