Chapter 1034: Chapter 1034: Asking For A Clue
"I want to challenge that creature again tomorrow. So, Teacher Ji..." Bai Xifeng grinned mischievously, leaning her chin on her hands. "Can you please tell me if you know anything at all about that thing?"
"You should think of a way to defeat it yourself." Ji Yuan stated calmly, completely unbothered by her playful probing.
"Tsk... Stingy..." Bai Xifeng clicked her tongue in blatant dissatisfaction, crossing her arms. "Can you at least give me a tiny clue?"
Ji Yuan remained quiet for a brief moment before offering a cryptic sentence. "Something is not born to be seen by the eyes."
Bai Xifeng immediately turned toward him, her slouching posture vanishing as her eyes lit up instantly with sharp focus.
"Is that it? Is that the clue?" Bai Xifeng asked eagerly, leaning forward.
"Yes." Ji Yuan nodded once, his expression perfectly stoic. "Nothing more."
His flat tone clearly indicated that the discussion was officially over. Bai Xifeng knew his temperament better than to continue pestering him for answers when he was in this mood.
"Fine... Fine..." Bai Xifeng sighed dramatically, throwing her hands up in defeat. "I will just figure it out all by myself."
After saying that, she reached into her spatial storage rune and took out several steaming bowls of freshly packed, savoury noodles.
"Here you are." Bai Xifeng said, placing one large bowl directly in front of Ji Yuan.
Almost immediately afterwards, Tao-chan appeared out of thin air, looking as though he had been lurking nearby and waiting for this exact moment the entire time. Like a disciplined worker faithfully clocking in for his daily shift, the small creature materialised right beside the table and stared expectantly up at Bai Xifeng.
Without needing to be told, Bai Xifeng chuckled and pushed two hefty bowls toward him.
"Just these two tiny bowls?" Tao-chan looked visibly dissatisfied, his whiskers twitching as he stared at the portions.
"Do you want them or not?" Bai Xifeng asked, raising a sharp eyebrow at him. "Because if you don’t want them, I will gladly eat them myself."
"No! No! Don’t you dare take them away!" Tao-chan squeaked. He immediately wrapped both of his paws protectively around the bowls, pulling them close as though defending a priceless, irreplaceable treasure. "I will eat them!"
Bai Xifeng snorted in amusement. Tao-chan immediately lowered his head and began ravenously devouring the noodles, completely forgetting his earlier complaints.
"I really want to eat your actual cooking though." Tao-chan mumbled between mouthfuls, noisily slurping the noodles into his mouth.
"I will try to actually cook for you when I have some free time." Bai Xifeng laughed softly at his bluntness.
It was the closest thing to a compromise she could offer him right now. Tao-chan immediately nodded his head in deep satisfaction, content with the promise.
...
The next morning, Bai Xifeng attended her scheduled Poison Master class exactly as usual.
By now, the shocking news regarding her impossible achievement inside the Cultivation Pagoda had already spread like wildfire throughout large portions of the Tianlong School. Naturally, Li Qiao had also heard the wild rumours floating around the disciples’ quarters.
"I heard that you somehow reached the 888th floor." Li Qiao said, looking at Bai Xifeng with a mixture of awe and intense curiosity. "How did you even manage to pull that off?"
Bai Xifeng merely shrugged her shoulders, treating it like a trivial matter. "I just cultivated and climbed the stairs whenever they happened to appear. As for why I ended up reaching the 888th floor specifically..." She spread her hands helplessly. "I honestly have absolutely no idea."
"How many times did you actually climb those stairs?" Li Qiao stared at Bai Xifeng, completely speechless, blinking in disbelief at her casual attitude.
"Yesterday? Just once." Bai Xifeng paused for a moment before continuing her explanation. "Actually, I already saw the stairs during my previous visit. However, the allocated cultivation time ended before I could climb them. So when I entered the Cultivation Pagoda yesterday, the staircase immediately appeared right in front of me again."
Li Qiao nodded, understanding the logic so far.
"I did not want to waste any time, so I immediately started climbing." Bai Xifeng said. Then, she deliberately dragged out her next sentence, a teasing glint in her eyes. "But..."
Li Qiao instantly frowned, leaning in. "But what?"
"But I was immediately chased and hunted by something I could not even see." Bai Xifeng sighed dramatically, leaning back. "It even attacked me several times out of nowhere. I was badly injured."
"Oh..." Li Qiao’s eyes widened as he suddenly remembered a piece of gossip. "I heard from someone that you caused quite a massive commotion when you left yesterday. They said your clothes were completely torn to shreds and covered in fresh blood."
"That part is entirely true." Bai Xifeng nodded honestly. "Well, I am planning to go right back to the Cultivation Pagoda immediately after this class ends."
"Again?!" Li Qiao looked genuinely shocked, his voice rising. "So you already figured out what kind of creature attacked you yesterday?"
"Nope." Bai Xifeng shook her head immediately with zero hesitation.
"You don’t know?" Li Qiao blinked, thoroughly bewildered.
"I don’t know." Bai Xifeng shook her head again.
"Then you might end up getting horribly injured all over again today!" Li Qiao said.
"Of course I am going back in," Bai Xifeng looked at Li Qiao as though the answer was the most obvious thing in the world. "I need to solve this problem eventually. If I don’t go back in there, how am I supposed to learn anything new about it?"
Li Qiao was rendered completely, utterly speechless. Sometimes he genuinely wondered whether Bai Xifeng simply lacked the human ability to feel fear. Or perhaps the girl was just completely crazy. Either way, Li Qiao realised he had absolutely nothing left to say to convince her otherwise.
