The Rising Phoenix

Chapter 1079: Taking A Break

Chapter 1079: Chapter 1079: Taking A Break

"Well... in that case, we would not trouble everyone to slow down for us." Bai Chunhua said gently, bowing her head slightly.

"Hmm." Bai Xifeng simply offered a neutral nod.

She did not bother saying anything else to either of them. She walked casually toward Cerberus, reaching up to lightly pat one of his massive, sharp-fanged heads before effortlessly leaping onto his broad, fur-covered back in one smooth motion. The others also quickly mounted their respective contracted beasts one after another.

With powerful, gusting flaps of heavy wings and thunderous, ground-shaking footsteps, the elite group quickly departed from the gates of Tianlong School, soaring and dashing into the vast distance under the countless envious, awestruck gazes of the remaining students.

Riding their high-tier contracted beasts was infinitely faster compared to travelling by a traditional, slow horse-drawn carriage. After roughly four long hours of non-stop riding, Bai Xifeng suddenly signalled her friends to come to a halt.

For what reason? Of course, because of her overwhelming hunger! Bai Xifeng firmly wanted to stop and eat.

Most of her friends already knew Bai Xifeng’s food-loving personality very well by now, so they did not mind the sudden detour at all. Not only that, but someone even practically suggested that they stop near a body of water for easy access to fresh water. Ning Shoukai also excitedly suggested that they try to catch some fresh fish to roast over the fire.

It did not take long for them to find a suitable spot. Well, it was not a large river, but rather a crystal-clear, bubbling stream. The water was so pristine that they could clearly see schools of plump fish swimming lazily around the rocks. Satisfied with the location, the group stopped in the clearing and instructed their weary contracted beasts to rest. With a flash of spiritual light, the beasts safely returned to their respective contracted beast spaces to recover their stamina.

Xie Jingguo and Ning Shoukai enthusiastically volunteered to jump straight into the cool stream to catch the fish, while the others happily gathered around to help Bai Xifeng prepare the outdoor kitchen. Bai Xifeng casually pulled out her array of high-quality cooking utensils from her spatial gear, alongside various seasonings, exotic spices, and two plump, prepped chickens she had prepared in advance.

She asked Xie Yanlin and Xie Fengge to build a wooden spit for her so she could roast one of the whole chickens over the open flame. As for the second chicken, she gathered several large, clean leaves from the surrounding trees and wrapped them tightly around the bird.

A bright fire was quickly lit. Once a thick bed of red-hot embers had successfully formed, Bai Xifeng dug a small pit directly beneath the coals, placed the wrapped chicken neatly inside, and buried it under a layer of glowing embers to let it slow-cook in its own juices. As for the first chicken, she impaled it onto a clean twig spit and mounted it securely over the dancing flames.

Meanwhile, Xie Lanying and Xie Qingge busied themselves by helping Bai Xifeng wash and chop a variety of fresh vegetables for a stir-fry.

Before long, Xie Jingguo and Ning Shoukai finally returned from the stream, soaking wet but grinning broadly with a bountiful catch of fish. Bai Xifeng took a few of the largest ones to prepare right away, while sealing the remaining fish into a cold-storage rune so they could enjoy them for their next meal.

Bai Xifeng expertly scaled and gutted the fish with practised, swift movements. Once that was done, she pulled out a large iron pot, intending to brew a rich, comforting fish soup over the fire.

"Someone go boil a kettle of water." Bai Xifeng called out cheerfully. "I want to brew some refreshing fruit tea for everyone once we are done!"

However, while they were patiently waiting for their delicious meal to finish cooking, the rustling of bushes echoed through the trees. The group immediately perked up their ears and looked around, spotting a shady-looking group of five men emerging into the clearing. Judging by their rugged armour, matching weapons, and unkempt appearance, they were clearly rogue mercenaries.

The mercenaries stopped in their tracks, their greedy eyes locking onto the cosy setup.

"Wow... something smells incredible here." One of the mercenary lackeys remarked, sniffing the air with a broad, yellowed grin.

"Just in time too. I am practically starving." Another one added, his eyes roving over the roasted chicken.

One man stepped forward from the pack, looking like he was their leader. From the arrogant, sneering look in his eyes, it was glaringly obvious that he looked down on Bai Xifeng and her young friends, treating them like helpless, wealthy nobles playing house in the wilderness.

"Yeah. Hand over all the food, brats." The leader ordered in a gruff tone, extending a calloused hand.

"What? Why on earth should we just hand our food over to you?" Ning Shoukai snapped back immediately, placing a hand on his hip.

"Listen here, you brat! You’d better follow our leader’s orders right now... otherwise..." One of the mercenary members glared menacingly, resting his hand on the hilt of his broadsword.

"Otherwise, what?" Bai Xifeng chimed in smoothly, taking a slow sip from her cup without looking up from the soup pot.

The mercenary group heard the sweet, clear voice and instantly turned their gazes directly toward Bai Xifeng.

"Boss, look at that girl over there." One of the mercenaries muttered, a filthy, vile grin spreading across his face as he licked his chapped lips. "She is an absolute beauty. I wonder how sweet she sounds crying on a bed. I really want to hear that sound."
