Chapter 658: Patrol
Next day.
Lao Er and Ling Er together with the other disciples from the South Lin Sword Sect were gathered at the entrance of the Black River Spirit Stones mines.
Other than the twenty over of them, there were the cultivators from the other sects, clans and families from Gui Feng City.
They waited for the Captain in-charge to come and give them their briefing on what to do for the day.
All of them were restless and bored.
They chatted while they waited for the day to begin.
"Who are those?"
"I’ve never seen them around before."
"I think they are the new sect called the South Lin Sword Sect?"
"Never heard of them."
"Look at them, I doubt they would be able to react when they see one of the cultivators from the north."
The other cultivators glanced at the disciples from the South Lin Sword Sect and they wondered who they were.
None of them had seen them around previously.
They could only wish that they wouldn’t be assigned together to be on their mission with them.
Who would have the time and effort to take care of them when things happened.
From what they knew, the cultivators from the north weren’t pushovers and were deadly when you encountered them.
It would be a matter of life and death in an instant.
"Disciples from South Lin Sword Sect, you are assigned to patrol the southern slope for today together with the disciples from the Hong Lim Sect."
The captain said and there was a round of sighs from the disciples of the Hong Lim Sect.
"Thank the heavens, it wasn’t us."
"Yeah, it would be such a hassle to be with them."
"Come on, be focused on what this mission is about instead of worrying so much about the fate of others."
Some of the other disciples were glad that they weren’t assigned together with the South Lin Sword Sect disciples, while others had their minds on the mission later.
They got more anxious as the days went by.
The Governor had mobilized them to protect the mines, enticing them with a huge reward, after finding out the location of the Crimson Wolf Lord.
They would have to hold until the reinforcements from the Tiger Fang Army arrived.
As for the Guardian of the City, Luo Guan Zhong, a sect elder from the Luo Yun Sect, he was tasked to station at the city to protect it, in case the cultivators from the north attacked.
One by one, the disciples got their assignment for the day and they started to move out.
The disciples from the Hong Lim Sect grumbled for a few moments before they walked towards the south slope with the disciples from the South Lin Sword Sect.
"Sect leader, they are too much..." One of the disciples wasn’t too happy about what had happened and he wanted to teach the disciples from the Hong Lim Sect a lesson.
The other South Lin Sword Sect disciples, who were rogue cultivators before they joined the sect, also felt the same.
Lao Er would have reacted in the same way if he was still his naive self.
Being rash and hot-headed puts you at so many risks.
He had come to prefer Grand Ancestor Lin’s ways of doing things.
Better to lie low and take action when it’s the right opportunity.
The imagery of Grand Ancestor Lin taking care of the Qing Feng Sect disciples without much words and mercy was still fresh in his mind.
And now that he was the sect leader, he wanted to be someone like Grand Ancestor Lin was.
"Put your mind into dealing with the cultivators from the north.
"I’ve seen and dealt with how they fought.
"You will need every bit of your focus and Spirit Qi to deal with them later."
Lao Er’s eyes swept across the disciples from the South Lin Sword Sect and they lowered their heads at him.
Ling Er was glad that he had grown up and she didn’t have to open her mouth to stop him like before.
It took them a while before they reached the southern slope.
The disciples from the Hong Lim Sect, without saying much to Lao Er and Ling Er, took the left side of the slope as their patrolling route.
Lao Er and Ling Er naturally took on the right side of the slope with the other disciples.
They started their patrol immediately with the disciples forming into different patrolling teams.
Lao Er led one team while Ling Er led the other.
It was an uneventful day for the most part and the heat from the hot summer sun didn’t help.
Even the wind that was blowing up the slope was hot and unbearable.
Sweat covered their bodies and it made their shirts stick to their skin.
Most of them were only at Qi Concentration Level and so they were not immune to the effects of the weather yet.
Many of them kept losing focus.
Lao Er and Ling Er had to stop and remind them of how dangerous it was dealing with the cultivators from the north.
The disciples nodded their heads as they knew that Lao Er and Ling Er were speaking from experience.
Lao Er even had to recuperate for some time when he was injured previously.
And while things were disciplined over at Lao Er’s side, it wasn’t the same over at the Hong Lim Sect’s side.
They were strolling along the path, chatting among themselves to make their worries go away.
Even their senior martial brothers weren’t too focused and were talking about something else with their fellow disciples to get their minds away.
He cursed his bad luck for the morning to be put together with the South Lin Sword Sect while he walked.
Then, when they reached a junction where there was a big rock in the middle of the junction, they saw something standing on top of the big rock.
"What’s that?"
"I don’t know, it looks like a wolf?"
"Are you sure, there aren’t any wolves around this area."
"Yeah. Look, it’s a white wolf, I definitely haven’t seen those around this area."
"Wait... I think that’s one of the..."
They were curious at first but when the realization of what they had encountered dawned on them, they glanced around at each other, not knowing what to do next.
