Chapter 320: Chapter 320: The Morgan Family Will Definitely Love Her
[Sweetie, how could you agree to such harsh terms, like getting paid only once every six months?]
[3,000 a month for a live-in helper is way too little.]
Zane saw that the stream comments were all up in arms about her salary.
She explained in a small voice, "I didn’t know at first that other people get paid monthly."
"A girl I met online also said 3,000 was too little for a live-in nanny and told me to renegotiate with my employer."
"Later, I brought it up with my employer, and she said 3,000 wasn’t low because room and board were included, so it was like making 6,000 a month."
[Wha...]
[How can she say that with a straight face? Equivalent to 6,000 a month???]
[My helper gets weekends off, and even she thinks 8,000 a month is too little.]
[Zane, how long have you been working for this family?]
Zane: "Almost three years."
Hearing this, Renee Jennings asked, "Three years? Has it always been 3,000?"
"No." Zane shook her head. "It was 2,800 the first year. I get a raise of 100 each year."
Renee Jennings was speechless.
[What’s the difference between a raise of 100 and no raise at all?]
[This family is just taking advantage of a young girl!]
Renee Jennings hesitated for a few seconds before asking, "Zane, you’ve been working for almost three years. Three years ago, you were only fifteen. Why did you start working to earn money so young?"
[Yeah, how could your parents bear to let a young girl like you suffer like this?]
[You’re at an age where you should be in school!]
Zane quickly explained, "My parents passed away when I was very young. I grew up with my grandparents..."
"A few years ago, my grandpa got sick and needed a lot of money for surgery. I wanted to help earn money for his treatment."
"But in the end, my grandpa still passed away..." Zane’s eyes dimmed as she said in a low voice, "Grandma couldn’t handle the blow, and she passed away a few months later too."
"I was all alone and didn’t know what to do. My aunt and uncle don’t like me, and I had nowhere else to go, so I just stayed here and kept working."
[Oh god... Zane has had it so rough.]
[So tragic.]
[Damn, my eyes are sweating.]
[*Sob* My heart aches for her.]
But Zane just smiled optimistically. "It’s okay, I’m used to it. And I’ve saved up a little money now, so I can go learn a trade."
Outside the door, SizzlingPork heard muttering voices from inside and pressed her ear to the crack in the door to eavesdrop.
After a moment, her expression changed abruptly. She quickly pulled out her phone, and just as she was about to search for Renee Jennings’s livestream, the doorbell suddenly rang.
SizzlingPork thought her husband was back and immediately went to open the door.
"Hon—" Her voice died in her throat as she stared, stunned, at the two uniformed police officers at her door. "Off-officers, who are you looking for?"
"Are you Melanie Ford?" the older officer inquired.
Melanie Ford was SizzlingPork’s real name. She said, flustered, "Officers, I’m Melanie Ford. Is there something I can help you with?"
"We’ve received a report that you are illegally employing a minor and have committed intentional assault. We are now lawfully opening an investigation and require your cooperation."
"I... I haven’t done anything!" Melanie Ford denied. "Officers, there must be some misunderstanding!"
Zane walked out of the utility room, took a deep breath, and shouted, "Officers, Melanie Ford is the one who hit me."
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Melanie Ford spun around and glared at her furiously. "I never hit you!"
Then, she turned back to the two officers with a fawning smile. "Officers, this is my daughter. She’s going through a rebellious phase and is just acting out to spite me!"
"I’m not her daughter!" Zane said. "I’m the helper she hired. I’ve been working here since I was fifteen."
Melanie Ford’s face turned livid with rage. She whirled back to glare at her. "Shut up! Stop spouting nonsense!"
[Damn, is this woman really trying to lie to the police?]
[Unbelievable.]
"Officers, the kid’s just being difficult. Sorry to have made you come all this way for nothing." Melanie Ford said as she tried to close the door.
"Wait." The older officer blocked her. "Consultant Jennings sent us. We need to get a clear understanding of the situation."
"Con-Consultant Jennings?" Melanie Ford asked, confused. "Who is Consultant Jennings?"
The older officer didn’t explain. Instead, he looked at the frail Zane. "Are you Edith Zane?"
"Yes." Zane nodded quickly. "Yes, I’m Edith Zane."
The officer’s demeanor softened. "Don’t worry, we’ll protect you."
"Thank you." Edith Zane bowed deeply.
Melanie Ford gritted her teeth and seethed, "Well, aren’t you something. I feed you, I house you, I even give you money, and you dare to call the police on me?"
"Everything you mentioned is what I’m owed. I earned it with my labor." Edith Zane met her resentful gaze, clutching her phone and the hem of her clothes tightly.
Melanie Ford clenched her fists. ’I could just kill this damn brat!’
But with the police present, she didn’t dare do anything. She could only swallow her rage.
"Edith Zane, did she hit you?" the police officer asked.
Edith Zane nodded, pointing to her left cheek. "She hit me right here."
"You’re lying!" Melanie Ford retorted. "I never touched you."
"We’ll investigate whether you did or not." The officer looked at Melanie Ford, his expression stern. "For now, please come with us to the station."
Melanie Ford never imagined that joining a livestream would end up landing her in a police station.
「 」
By the time Edith Zane arrived at the police station, Renee Jennings had already ended her stream.
It was too late; otherwise, she would have wanted to go to the station where Edith was.
’That poor girl has been through so much.’
Just then, a message from Henry Stark came through: [Don’t worry about Edith Zane. I’ve already put in a word.]
A small smile touched Renee Jennings’s lips as she quickly typed back: [You know me best, Captain Stark.]
After sending the message, she got up and went to her room to wash up.
On the other end of the line, Henry Stark leaned against his headboard, his gaze lowered to the chat on his phone screen. A faint smile slowly spread across his lips.
Meanwhile, in the same city of Zenvia, Yvonne Morgan was in a terrible mood.
She had watched Renee Jennings’s livestream until the very end, and the whole time she felt like she was trapped in a nightmare.
’In her past life, Renee Jennings’s end had been so wretched, yet now she was so dazzling...’
’Why was this happening?’
’Her stream actually had two hundred thousand viewers, and she had over five million followers!’
Yvonne Morgan’s face was ashen. She scrolled through all of Renee Jennings’s posts and comments, still unable to believe any of it.
’Why did things turn out this way?’
’What right did Renee Jennings have?’
Yvonne Morgan couldn’t sleep all night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Renee Jennings’s calm, smiling face from the livestream.
’No.’
’This can’t be happening.’
Yvonne Morgan screamed and shot up in bed.
’If Renee Jennings is like this, the Morgan Family will definitely adore her.’
’And then, the one who’ll be despised and ignored will be me.’
But she couldn’t think of any way to stop it from happening. The situation had already spiraled completely out of her control...
"Renee Jennings, why aren’t you the tragedy and the joke you were in our past life...?" Yvonne Morgan muttered hatefully.
