Chapter 363: Chapter 363: The Kitten That Vanished Into Thin Air
Sawyer whipped her head around to look at her, eyes wide with shock. "How could you... ask that?"
Renee Jennings explained, "Today in the meeting room, I saw you..."
Sawyer’s eyes reddened again, but she managed a smile. "No wonder they say girls are more perceptive. It’s really true."
Renee Jennings gently took her arm. "So I guessed right?"
"It didn’t exactly happen to me," Sawyer said. "It was my little sister. I was playing with her in our village when a strange woman suddenly showed up and gave us candy."
"She kept complimenting my sister, saying how cute she was, and then asked if she could hold her. We thought she was a nice person..."
Sawyer’s voice choked up. She raised a hand to her mouth, her voice dropping to a whisper. "It was all my fault. I was so stupid. I never imagined she’d pick my sister up, turn around, and just run."
Back then, she’d cried while chasing after them, but the woman was very fast, and there was even a motorcycle to pick her up.
Renee Jennings squeezed her hand, comforting her in a soft voice. "It wasn’t your fault. Some people are just evil."
She reached out with her other hand to wipe away Sawyer’s tears.
’I can’t imagine how desperate Sawyer must have been when her sister was snatched away, or how much pain she must have endured all these years.’
"The real reason I became a police officer was to find my sister," Sawyer said, sniffling. "I promised my grandparents I would definitely bring her back."
"Okay." Renee Jennings nodded firmly. "I’ll help you find her."
When she returned home that night, Renee Jennings went to Zane and Jasmine’s room. Gazing at the sleeping children, she was overwhelmed with emotion.
’Back then, I was being controlled by the plot and I deliberately abandoned Jasmine...’
She knelt by the bed and gently took Jasmine’s little hand. "Jasmine," she whispered, "I’m so sorry."
After her shower, Renee Jennings lay in bed, planning to get some sleep. But she tossed and turned, unable to rest.
She glanced at the time. Exactly midnight.
Realizing she hadn’t streamed in several days, she got out of bed and went to the study to do one last broadcast for the month of June.
In less than two minutes, her viewer count broke ten thousand.
After a brief greeting, Renee Jennings started taking callers.
"PotatoPop" connected to the stream. A girl with a baby face and short hair appeared on the split screen.
Renee Jennings smiled. "Hello, PotatoPop."
"Hi, streamer!" PotatoPop waved, mustering a forced smile.
Renee Jennings said, "PotatoPop, you look exhausted."
"I am," PotatoPop nodded. "I haven’t slept well for several nights. I’ve just been waiting for you to start streaming."
"What’s wrong?" A serious expression settled on Renee Jennings’s plain, pretty features.
PotatoPop sighed. "My boyfriend got me a little kitten for May 20th last month, but it suddenly disappeared. I’ve looked everywhere, but I can’t find it. It’s like it vanished into thin air."
Renee Jennings’s brow furrowed slightly. "Could it have run outside?"
PotatoPop shook her head. "I don’t think so. I have a pet gate installed, and I’m always careful to close the main door behind me."
[It can’t just disappear into thin air. It’s not a cat spirit or something.]
[What about the balcony? Or the windows? Maybe it fell out?]
PotatoPop saw the comments and explained, "My balcony is enclosed. The windows are also unlikely—they’re too high up. The kitten can’t climb that high yet."
"Do you have any cameras installed in your home?" Renee Jennings asked.
PotatoPop: "I used to have one, but my dog wrecked it, and I just haven’t bought a new one yet."
Renee Jennings: "You also have a dog?"
"That’s right."
"What kind is it?"
"A black-and-white Krylia." PotatoPop pursed her lips. "Usually, when I’m at work, it’s just the two of them at home. So the reason I called in tonight was to ask if you, the streamer, could communicate with my dog. I want to ask him if he knows where the kitten went."
Renee Jennings’s slender brows knitted together tightly. She seemed hesitant to speak. "Krylias are quite large, aren’t they? How big is yours?"
Though she wasn’t sure why she was being asked this, PotatoPop got up and went to her living room. "Let me show you."
’The Krylia she was raising was about sixty or seventy pounds. That should count as a medium size, right?’
[That’s not small, girl!]
[Give it two more months and it’ll have eaten itself into a pig, hahaha]
[Looking at this Krylia, I think I have a guess where the missing kitten went...]
[Where?]
Instead of returning to her room, PotatoPop sat down on the living room sofa. "Streamer, can you help me ask Wes?"
Wes was the Krylia’s name.
"I can," Renee Jennings agreed, her voice flat. "But you should prepare yourself."
’In truth, just like the audience, I’ve already guessed where the kitten went.’
"Okay." PotatoPop nodded, giving a bitter smile. "Honestly, after all this time, I think I can handle even the worst news."
Renee Jennings didn’t respond to that. Instead, she addressed Wes directly. "Wes, your owner brought home a little kitten last month. Is that right?"
Wes, who had been resting his head on the floor, let out a disinterested sound. "Yeah, yeah, so what?"
’This dog seems to have a bad temper,’ Renee thought. "But the kitten’s gone missing. Do you know about that?"
Wes propped himself up, his eyes fixed on the source of the voice. He let out a bark. "Of course I know."
"Then where did the kitten go?"
Wes lowered his gaze and let his tongue loll out in a grin. "Take a guess. If you guess right, I’ll tell you."
Renee Jennings’s voice was devoid of emotion. "It’s in your stomach, isn’t it?"
The hand PotatoPop was using to hold her phone trembled. "Streamer, don’t joke around," she said, shocked. "How is that possible? Wes would never do something like that."
[My thoughts exactly, Renee~]
[Ahhhhhh, is this for real? That’s so cruel...]
[Sob sob sob, as a cat and dog owner, I refuse to accept this! Renee, please don’t joke about this!!!]
A look of surprise crossed Wes’s canine face. "Huh. You’re a lot smarter than my owner. She still doesn’t believe I ate that whiny little furball, hahaha."
He even threw his head back and let out an arrogant, cackling laugh.
[Seeing him act like that, I’m starting to believe it ahhh]
[How could a dog eat a kitten... Impossible. Absolutely impossible!]
PotatoPop nodded emphatically. "I think it’s impossible, too! Wes was so good to the kitten!"
"That was only what you saw," Renee Jennings said with a sigh. "But do you have any idea what his attitude was like when you weren’t looking?"
PotatoPop opened her mouth but couldn’t answer the question.
After a few seconds of silence, she retorted, "But how can a dog be two-faced? Wes is so simple and goofy. He wouldn’t be like that."
Renee Jennings didn’t answer her, continuing to question Wes instead. "Why did you eat the kitten?"
Wes: "My owner bought her for me to eat."
