Chapter 373: Chapter 373: Spent a Week with My Ex-Girlfriend
"Mom, Dad, you really have to help me this time." Cody Zane’s face was etched with anxiety.
Mrs. Zane asked tentatively, "What’s wrong? Did Mindy Callahan bring up divorce?"
"No," Cody Zane said, shaking his head quickly. "She hasn’t mentioned it, but if you don’t help me, we really will get a divorce..."
Hearing this, Mr. Zane grew tense as well. "Spit it out! Tell us what happened!"
"Do you remember Patricia Lynn?" Cody Zane asked.
"Isn’t that your ex-girlfriend?" Mrs. Zane said immediately.
"What does she have to do with this?" Mr. Zane asked, his brow furrowed.
Cody Zane took a deep breath before saying, "Yes, it’s her. She contacted me out of the blue a few days ago..."
"Let me remind you, you’re a married man now!" Mr. Zane cut him off, his tone severe. "If you want a peaceful home, you can’t be messing around."
"What are you talking about!" Mrs. Zane snapped, displeased. "Didn’t you hear him? *She* contacted *him*. How is that him ’messing around’? It just proves how charming our son is."
Mr. Zane: "..."
"Mom, Dad," Cody Zane said with a wry smile. "Patricia told me she had my son. He’s already over a year old."
"What?" Mr. Zane’s expression changed drastically.
"Really?" Mrs. Zane’s face lit up. "I have a grandson!"
Cody Zane himself hadn’t expected it—that he already had a son who was over a year old.
"How can you be sure he’s your son?" Mr. Zane asked, remaining relatively calm. "You two broke up a long time ago. Even if you did have a son, he couldn’t possibly be over a year old."
By then, Cody Zane had already been preparing for his engagement to Mindy Callahan.
"That’s right!" Mrs. Zane was instantly crestfallen. "Son, she’s trying to trick you!"
Cody Zane stammered, "I didn’t believe it at first, either. But I got a paternity test. He really is my son."
Mrs. Zane beamed again. "I really do have a grandson!"
Mr. Zane’s mood, however, was far from celebratory. "Weren’t you with Mindy back then?"
"Yes." Cody Zane hung his head and mumbled, "But Mindy and I were fighting around that time, and I went on a business trip to Patricia’s city..."
’He had been fighting with Mindy Callahan at the time, so he’d deliberately gone to spend a week with his ex. He remembered using protection every time; he had no idea how Patricia Lynn could have gotten pregnant.’
"You!" Mr. Zane pointed at him, furious. "How could you be so foolish! You and Mindy were just having a fight. How could you do something like that?"
"See? Mindy Callahan really is a barren hen. You go on a business trip for a few days, and Patricia gives you a son." Mrs. Zane’s priorities were completely different from her husband’s.
"Shut up!" Mr. Zane snapped.
Mrs. Zane roared back unhappily, "Am I wrong? Mindy Callahan has been married into our family for two years and can’t even pop out a single egg! If she’s not barren, then what is she?"
Mr. Zane had no strength to argue back and sighed wearily.
"Both of you, stop fighting!" Cody Zane said, frustrated. "I didn’t come here to watch you argue, I came here for you to help me think of a solution!"
"What kind of solution?" Mrs. Zane asked.
Cody Zane said, "How am I supposed to tell Mindy about this? She’ll never accept it."
"Why didn’t Patricia Lynn tell you when she found out she was pregnant?" Mr. Zane’s face was grim as he fired off the questions. "Why didn’t she consult you before giving birth? Why wait until the child is over a year old to tell you?"
Cody Zane had asked Patricia Lynn the same questions.
She told him that when she discovered she was pregnant, he was just getting married, and she was afraid of disrupting his wedding.
Afterward, she considered getting an abortion, but her doctor advised against it after an examination. Apparently, due to her physical condition, terminating the pregnancy could have made it difficult for her to conceive in the future.
She had originally planned to raise the child on her own, but then she met the man she loves and they’re preparing to get married.
However, her fiancé’s family won’t let him marry a woman who already has a son. Left with no other choice, she had to tell Cody.
Patricia Lynn’s intention was to give him their son to raise.
Cody Zane was utterly speechless and had retorted on the spot.
’Her fiancé wouldn’t accept her bringing a son into the marriage, so what made her think his wife would accept him suddenly having one?’
Patricia Lynn had been completely casual about it, saying that since he and Mindy Callahan were already married, Mindy had no choice and would just have to accept the situation.
But based on Cody Zane’s knowledge of Mindy Callahan, he knew she would never accept it.
The issue had been tormenting Cody Zane for days. With no other ideas, he could only turn to his parents for help.
Mr. Zane’s face was ashen with rage. "This is a mess of your own making!"
"How the hell can you say that about our son?" Mrs. Zane instantly shrieked, but her face softened as she turned to her son. "Don’t you worry, honey. This problem is very easy to solve."
Cody Zane looked at her expectantly. "Mom, what’s your idea?"
"Isn’t Mindy Callahan barren?" Mrs. Zane said, as if it were obvious. "She’s being given a ready-made son. She couldn’t ask for more!"
Cody Zane: "..."
He frowned again and said impatiently, "Mom, Mindy isn’t barren. Her checkups are all normal, we just don’t want to have kids so soon."
"What do you mean you ’don’t want to have kids so soon’?" Mrs. Zane said with displeasure. "You get married, you have kids. It’s the natural order of things!"
Cody Zane ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "If I bring my son home now, Mindy will definitely divorce me."
"She wouldn’t dare!" Mrs. Zane scoffed. "Who would want her if she’s divorced?"
"You don’t understand her!" Cody Zane sighed. "I asked you for help, not to make me more stressed."
"I’m not getting involved in this," Mr. Zane said, standing up. "It’s your decision."
With that, he turned and walked toward the bedroom.
"Old Man Zane, stop right there!" Mrs. Zane yelled. "Hurry and help our son think of something!"
Mr. Zane entered the bedroom without a backward glance, slamming the door shut with a BANG.
"Your father is just so stubborn and single-minded," Mrs. Zane said, looking at her son sympathetically. "Don’t you fret, Mom will definitely think of a solution for you!"
"Then think fast!" Cody Zane urged.
Mrs. Zane thought for a moment, then suddenly slapped her thigh. "Son, I’ve got a brilliant idea!" she said excitedly.
"What is it?" Cody Zane immediately leaned closer.
Mrs. Zane suggested, "Why don’t we just tell Mindy Callahan that your father and I want to adopt a son, and then... we’ll have you two raise him for us."
Cody Zane listened, thought it over for a moment, and decided it was an excellent idea. "Mom, I think that could work. So, will you and Dad go to our house tomorrow and tell Mindy?"
"Deal." Mrs. Zane flashed a triumphant smile. "See, son? Your mom’s pretty smart, isn’t she?"
Cody Zane: "Brilliant, brilliant."
Renee Jennings never imagined this was the truth behind the ’adopted son’.
She thanked Little Goldfish and said softly, "SesamePouch, I’ve gotten to the bottom of it. That son your parents-in-law want to adopt..."
