Chapter 375: Chapter 375: A Strange Auntie in the House
[I also think it’s not that simple.]
[There’s no way they started sleeping in separate rooms just because your dad was subsidizing his brothers. He must have been doing that for a while.]
[Exactly. Your dad must have always been helping out his brothers. Something more serious must have happened, something that crossed your mom’s line.]
Renee Jennings saw the audience’s comments. Her bright eyes narrowed slightly as she said slowly, "Marmalade’s dad might have made a mistake many men make."
[Her dad probably cheated.]
[Men!!! They’re so dishonest.]
[Are there any good men left in the world?]
Marmalade’s face turned grim. She nodded with difficulty. "I suspected the same thing. Actually... I saw my dad with a woman a couple of days ago."
[Damn it!!!]
[If it’s really because of your dad... that your mom passed away, then I think it’s better not to have a dad like that!]
Renee Jennings furrowed her fine brows and asked softly, "Marmalade, did your parents have any pets at home?"
"Yes." Marmalade stood up, walked a few steps, and turned the camera to show a calico cat sunbathing on the balcony. "My mom found him two years ago on her way to the market. She fed him a little, and he ended up latching onto her and following her all the way home."
Marmalade reached out and stroked the calico’s head. "My mom felt it was fate, so she brought him home. She found him when she was buying steamed buns, so she named him Rolly."
Renee Jennings said with emotion, "Your mother was a kind person."
"I think my mom was a very good person, too," Marmalade said with a bitter smile. "All the neighbors said it was such a shame she passed away so young."
"Indeed." Renee Jennings nodded, her gaze falling on the calico cat on the screen. "Hello, Rolly. Can I chat with you for a bit?"
Rolly followed the voice and stared at Marmalade’s phone, meowing, "Chat about what?"
Renee: "Let’s talk about your human mom, okay?"
Hearing this, Rolly’s head drooped in sadness. "Mommy... MEOW... I haven’t seen her in so many days."
"Do you know where she went?"
"Big Sis said Mommy went to a place far, far away and isn’t ever coming back."
Renee Jennings’s eyes flickered, a heavy feeling settling in her heart. "Then does Rolly know what happened before Mommy went to that place far, far away? Did she fight with Daddy?"
"They fought." Rolly nodded his fluffy head. "They were really loud! They didn’t just fight before she went far away; they fought a lot at home all the time."
Renee frowned and asked, "Did Mommy and Daddy fight often?"
Marmalade gripped her phone tightly, her palms growing damp.
Rolly: "Yeah."
Renee: "Do you know who started the fights?"
"Probably Daddy."
"What did they say?"
"He always said Mommy was giving him a look, that she had a sour face all day and it ruined his mood. Mommy told him if he didn’t like looking at her, he shouldn’t come home."
"What about what happened right before Mommy went far away? Do you remember, Rolly?"
"Of course I remember!" The incident was seared into Rolly’s memory because a strange woman was in the house that day.
That evening, after dinner, Marmalade’s Mom took Rolly out for a walk.
When she returned home at 8:30, she found a pair of women’s red high heels by the door.
Marmalade’s Mom frowned. As she unlocked the door with her key, she heard the flirtatious sounds of a woman from the bedroom.
She walked to the bedroom door and saw Marmalade’s Dad lying on the bed with a woman with long, black, curly hair on top of him.
The sight stunned Marmalade’s Mom. Her face flushed red with anger as she shouted, "Bruno Lawson!"
She knew Bruno Lawson had someone on the side. She had been enduring it, thinking he would rein himself in and break it off with the other woman. She never imagined he would actually bring her home!
The long-haired woman turned to look at her, a smile playing on her red lips. "Sister-in-law, long time no see."
The color drained from Marmalade’s Mom’s face. She pointed at the woman, her voice trembling. "You... you... Joan Lowe? How could it be you?"
Joan Lowe was the ex-wife of Marmalade’s uncle, her husband’s younger brother. They had divorced five years ago due to incompatibility.
Marmalade’s Mom never would have dreamed that her husband’s mistress would be his former sister-in-law!
"It’s so good that you still remember me, Sister-in-law." Joan Lowe got off Bruno Lawson, flicking her hair back with a gesture that was both cheap and alluring.
Marmalade’s Mom was trembling with rage. "You two are shameless!" she seethed. "How could you do something like this?"
"Sister-in-law, I know what we’re doing is wrong." Joan Lowe walked up to her barefoot, pouting her lips in a feigned look of innocence and grievance. "But you can’t control matters of the heart. Big Brother and I were just irresistibly drawn to each other, we couldn’t help ourselves."
"You shameless hussy!" Marmalade’s Mom was so furious she raised her hand to slap her, but a rough hand caught her wrist.
Bruno Lawson said with displeasure, "Lily Crowe, we can talk, but don’t get physical."
Joan Lowe immediately hid in his arms. "Big Brother, Sister-in-law is so mean."
"Don’t be afraid," Bruno Lawson soothed her. "I’m here. She can’t do anything to you."
Marmalade’s Mom was beside herself with rage. "Bruno Lawson, you’re insane! You’re completely out of your mind! How can you do this? Do you have any thought for your brother, or for Jolie?"
"It’s not like I’ve committed some unforgivable sin," Bruno Lawson said matter-of-factly. "Joan and I are in love. We haven’t wronged anyone. She and Hogan have been divorced for ages."
"Haven’t wronged anyone?" Lily Crowe gave a desolate laugh. "Bruno Lawson, touch your heart and say that again! We are not divorced! I am not dead yet!"
"Sister-in-law, don’t get so worked up." Joan Lowe pushed past her and walked into the living room, a wide smile on her face. "You’re getting old now, you don’t bother dressing up... you’re past your prime. It’s only natural that Big Brother is tired of you."
Lily Crowe gasped for air, panting heavily. "Joan Lowe," she raged, "have you no shame?"
"Sister-in-law, Big Brother and I have actually been together for a long time." Joan Lowe sat down on the sofa and crossed her legs. "To be honest with you, the real reason I divorced Hogan back then was because I fell in love with his big brother."
"What did you say?" Lily Crowe’s expression changed drastically. She strode in front of her. "You divorced him for *him*?"
"Yes," Joan Lowe nodded. "After all, Big Brother isn’t like you. He just gets more charming with age."
"You know, Sister-in-law, I’m really so lucky. I never thought Big Brother and I would be mutually in love..." As she spoke, she shot a flirtatious look at Bruno Lawson.
Lily Crowe clutched at her chest, her breathing growing rapid and ragged. "You do this, and you still dare to say you haven’t wronged anyone? How ridiculous!"
"Sister-in-law, you can hit me, you can yell at me, I don’t mind." Joan Lowe looked at her imploringly, but a flash of triumph glinted in her eyes. "I only ask that you don’t kick me out. Let me stay in this house, and we can be by Big Brother’s side together from now on."
