Chapter 385: Chapter 385: Sensing Danger Approaching
A little after five in the morning, all was silent. The sky was turning a fish-belly white on the horizon, and dew had formed like pearls on the tips of the grass.
Renee Jennings pulled open the back door and got into the car. "Morning."
"Renee, morning," Kyle Morgan greeted her from the driver’s seat.
Sawyer handed her breakfast from the passenger seat. "Renee, I picked this up from downstairs at my place. It’s not much, but have a bite."
"Okay." Renee didn’t stand on ceremony. She took it and began to eat while listening to Sawyer explain the details of the urgent mission.
"A citizen spotted Kaiser while eating at a barbecue stall. We suspect it’s the one that bit Elias Yardley."
"But according to the person who reported it, Kaiser didn’t attack any customers. It fled after being discovered. The caller was still worried, though, afraid other people might get accidentally hurt by it."
Renee finished the last of her Soy and said softly, "So, you’re saying we don’t know Kaiser’s exact location right now?"
"Correct," Sawyer said. "We only know the general area."
Renee nodded. "Then there are definitely a lot of unknown dangers."
"Yeah," Kyle Morgan sighed. "What if that Kaiser bites someone else..."
The car drove on as the sky gradually brightened. The first rays of morning sun slowly pierced the clouds and spilled onto the earth. A few pedestrians could be seen on the sides of the street.
The police car stopped by the side of the road. Across from a greenbelt was a whole row of late-night food stalls, where employees were washing tables, chairs, and storefronts.
Henry Stark, Levi Hollis, and Zachary Conway were at the entrance of one of the barbecue restaurants, taking a statement from a witness at the scene.
"I’d just stepped aside to call my wife when I felt something moving in the greenbelt. I thought it was a rat or a cat, but when I got closer, I saw it was Kaiser! Scared me to death, and I ran right back to the stall to tell everyone."
"The owner heard there was a Kaiser and was afraid it would get into his shop, so he went to find a stick. By the time we went to look, there was no trace of Kaiser in the greenbelt."
"Everyone said I must have seen things, but I’m positive I wasn’t mistaken. It was a Kaiser."
"The others went back to drinking, but I just felt that I hadn’t been wrong. I took a stick and rummaged through the greenbelt myself, but I didn’t find anything..."
"Officers, I’m telling you, I got a really clear look. It was Kaiser. It raised its head and even stared at me for a few seconds!"
Zachary Conway nodded seriously. "Okay, we understand. Thank you for reporting it promptly."
The police were taking this matter very seriously. After all, the Snake was highly venomous, and a citizen had already died from its bite.
Henry Stark thought for a moment, then took out his phone to call Quentin Lowell and report in.
Renee scanned the surroundings. She couldn’t see any trace of animals nearby, not even a single bird on the tree trunks.
Once animals sense approaching danger, their first instinct is to flee and hide.
Renee called out, "I’m going to walk around the area."
"I’ll go with you." Sawyer immediately jogged to her side.
The man who made the report watched Renee’s retreating figure and found her very familiar. "That girl looks so familiar... Is she a celebrity?"
After Renee had walked some distance away, his eyes suddenly lit up, and he exclaimed in surprise, "Isn’t that the really popular streamer online, the one who can understand what animals say?"
No one answered his question.
Renee walked up to a grilled fish shop where a yellow pastoral dog was tied up at the entrance.
The shop was being cleaned. She walked up to the pastoral dog, stopping a few steps away to greet it. "Hello."
The pastoral dog gave a friendly WOOF. "Hello."
A small smile touched Renee’s lips as she took another step closer. "My name is Renee. What’s yours?"
"They call me Lucky."
"Lucky. That’s a very nice name."
Lucky was very polite. "Thank you for the compliment!"
Renee closed the distance between them again. "Lucky, can I ask you a question?"
"What question?" Lucky tilted his head in confusion.
Renee asked, "In the middle of the night, did you sense a very dangerous animal show up?"
"I did," Lucky said, bobbing his head emphatically. "I sensed it. A very dangerous smell. I was so worried I was going to die, but thankfully, I was okay in the end."
"Did you see what it was?"
"It was long, but I don’t know what it was."
"Did you see which way it went?"
"No." Lucky shook his head. "I didn’t dare look."
He was terrified that making eye contact would make him a target.
"Thank you." Renee patted the dog’s head. "I’m going now. Goodbye."
"Goodbye." Lucky watched her leave.
Renee and Sawyer walked a bit farther and saw two little Swallows perched on a tree.
"Hello," Renee said, waving at them.
The two little Swallows sensed her goodwill and flapped their wings, circling in front of her. "Hello."
Renee looked up at them with a slight smile. "Can I ask you a question?"
"You can!"
"Go ahead."
Renee asked, "A Snake appeared here in the middle of the night. Did you know?"
"We know," a Swallow said. "We were all scared off at the time."
"Did any of your friends see where that Snake went?"
"Yes," the other Swallow answered. "We have a friend who’s very brave. It hid nearby and spied on the Snake the whole time."
"That is brave. Could I trouble you to go find it for me?" Renee pleaded. "I can offer food as a thank you."
The two little Swallows looked at each other, put their heads together to confer for a moment, and then nodded at her.
Renee’s lips curved upward. "Thank you," she said gratefully.
"Then wait here a minute. We’ll go look," a Swallow said.
Renee: "Okay, thank you for your trouble."
The Swallows flapped their wings and flew away.
Renee watched their figures shrink into the distance, then turned to Sawyer. "They said a brave friend of theirs was following Kaiser. They’re going to get that friend now."
"That’s fantastic," Sawyer said, delighted.
The two of them stood under a tree in the greenbelt, discussing the case while they waited.
Just then, a trembling voice drifted over. "A-Are you looking for that terrifying Snake?"
Hearing the voice, Renee followed the sound with her eyes.
A little mouse poked its head out of the greenbelt, looking at them.
Renee bent down slightly to look at it. "Little mouse, do you know where that Snake is?"
"I just escaped. That Snake ate my companion..." The little mouse’s voice trembled as it spoke.
Renee: "Where is the Snake? Can you take us to it?"
Hearing this, the little mouse was terrified. "You actually want to go find it? Aren’t you afraid of being eaten?"
"It probably ran into some trouble," Renee explained. "I want to ask it what happened."
"You’re way too brave!" the little mouse exclaimed. "It’s too dangerous! I don’t dare go. I barely managed to escape. Going back would be certain death!"
