Chapter 386: Chapter 386: Slithering to the Child’s Side, Flicking Its Tongue
Recalling how its companion was eaten, the little mouse was still terrified, its entire body trembling.
"That terrible snake opened its mouth and swallowed my companion in a single gulp."
Renee Jennings didn’t push it, asking softly, "Can you tell me where the snake ate your friend?"
The little mouse: "Next to a barbecue restaurant."
"A barbecue restaurant?" Renee Jennings took out her phone and searched. There were seven or eight barbecue restaurants within a one-kilometer radius.
She pursed her lips and said to Sawyer, "The little mouse is terrified. Let’s wait for the Swallows’ friend."
"Okay." Sawyer nodded.
A moment later, the two Swallows flew over with their friend.
Their braver friend was a spotted woodpecker with very unique markings.
"Hello there, friend woodpecker." Renee Jennings was the first to greet it.
The woodpecker looked at her curiously. "A human! You can actually understand the language of birds!"
"Yes." A slight smile touched Renee Jennings’s lips. "I heard from your friends that you’re very brave. You actually dared to follow Kaiser?"
"Heh heh." The woodpecker laughed proudly. "That’s right. This bird is very brave."
"So, while you were following Kaiser, did you see what it was doing?" Renee Jennings asked.
The woodpecker said, "I saw it eat a few mice."
Hearing this, the little mouse in the bushes immediately lost its composure and started sobbing.
The woodpecker heard the sound and asked doubtfully, "What was that noise?"
"That’s the little mouse," Renee Jennings explained. "Its companion was eaten by Kaiser."
"Oh my, that’s just terrible," the woodpecker said sympathetically.
"Yes, it is." Renee Jennings agreed, then asked, "Do you know where Kaiser is now?"
"I do." The woodpecker nodded. "It’s slithering around near those houses. It looks like it’s searching for something."
"Can you take us to it?"
"Of course." The woodpecker agreed without hesitation.
"Thank you." Renee Jennings expressed her gratitude, then lowered her gaze to bid the little mouse farewell. "We have to go now. Take care of yourself. Goodbye."
The little mouse replied, "You have to protect yourselves too. Don’t get eaten by that terrible snake."
"We will, thank you for your concern." After speaking, Renee Jennings looked up and told the woodpecker, "We need to call a few more friends to go with us."
"No problem." The woodpecker fluttered its wings and flew beside her, its tail feathers twitching slightly. Its beady black eyes darted around. "Human, why are you looking for Kaiser? Aren’t you afraid it will eat you?"
Renee Jennings explained, "We’re worried it might accidentally hurt someone, and we also want to find out if something has happened to it."
"I see," the woodpecker said with dawning understanding.
Renee Jennings and Sawyer called the others, and the group followed the woodpecker toward Kaiser’s location.
After winding through streets and alleys, the woodpecker suddenly cried out warily, "This bird smells it!" It beat its wings faster, climbing nimbly into the air.
The woodpecker looked down from mid-air and quickly spotted Kaiser.
It flew back to Renee Jennings’s side and said gravely, "This bird sees it. It seems to be approaching a human child."
"Approaching a human child?" Renee Jennings’s expression changed slightly. "Let’s hurry," she said quickly.
The group immediately picked up the pace and soon entered a small park.
The woodpecker folded its wings and landed on Renee Jennings’s shoulder. "It’s behind that biggest tree."
"Okay." Renee Jennings nodded and looked toward the large tree.
She stared for a long while before she finally spotted Kaiser hidden behind the tree.
In the next instant, Renee Jennings suddenly remembered something.
’Couldn’t I have used points to exchange for an item card to find Kaiser?’
Renee Jennings was suddenly at a loss for words with herself. ’This brain of mine really isn’t working.’
Fortunately, with the woodpecker’s help, finding Kaiser hadn’t taken too much time today.
So Renee Jennings didn’t dwell on it and scanned the people in the small park.
A few old men were playing chess, a group of aunties were square dancing, and an old woman was looking after her grandson.
The stroller was set to the side. The child, probably not yet able to walk, was sitting on the ground, babbling as it played with leaves.
Although the grandmother was supposed to be watching her grandson, her eyes were glued to the square dancing nearby, and her hands and feet were moving along with the aunties’ dance.
Kyle Morgan raised his voice and shouted a few times, trying to warn the old woman to take her child away, but the square dancing music was too loud. The grandmother didn’t hear a single word.
Behind the big tree, Kaiser reared its triangular head, its dark brown pupils fixed on the child. The skin folds on its neck flared into a flat hood as it flicked its venom-laced tongue, radiating a poised-to-strike danger.
Renee Jennings’s brow furrowed. "That child is in extreme danger."
"I’ll check." Henry Stark had already notified the fire department. He took out his phone and made a call. "How much longer until you arrive?"
Hanging up, he looked at Renee Jennings, his tone slightly heavy. "They’ll be about five more minutes."
Renee Jennings hesitated. "Should we go over first? Maybe I can talk to it?"
In truth, she wasn’t confident. No one could guarantee that Kaiser wouldn’t suddenly attack, especially since this cobra held a grudge against humans.
In the time it took to say just a few words, Kaiser was already closing in on the child on the ground.
Everyone’s hearts sank.
Renee Jennings quickly asked the system in her mind, "System 009, are there any items that can defend against Kaiser’s attack?"
"System 009: The following items are currently available. ’Soul of Ten Thousand Beasts’: Intimidates Kaiser and induces fear. Duration: ten minutes. ’Hundred Times Animal Affinity’: Makes Kaiser feel a sense of kinship, encouraging it to approach willingly and reducing its aggression. Duration: thirty minutes."
Renee Jennings replied mentally, "Redeem ’Soul of Ten Thousand Beasts’ first."
"System 009: Are you sure you want to use 100 points to redeem the item ’Soul of Ten Thousand Beasts’?"
’Yes,’ Renee Jennings confirmed.
"System 009: ’Soul of Ten Thousand Beasts’ successfully redeemed."
Renee Jennings had originally planned to give Henry Stark and the others a heads-up before going over, but she didn’t expect Kaiser to have already slithered up to the child, flicking its tongue.
There was no time.
She didn’t even have time to explain as she broke into a run.
"Renee Jennings!" The others shouted her name almost in unison, their voices thick with worry.
’Soul of Ten Thousand Beasts’ had already taken effect. Sensing the oppressive aura emanating from Renee Jennings, Kaiser immediately recoiled behind the big tree in fear.
Renee Jennings stopped beside the child and bent down to pick it up.
The old woman finally reacted. Turning to see her grandson in the arms of a strange girl, she said unhappily, "What are you doing holding my grandson?"
She snatched the child back.
Renee Jennings explained, "There was a snake just now."
"What snake? Where’s a snake?" The old woman looked around. "I don’t see one. Nonsense! I bet you’re trying to steal my grandson!"
Renee Jennings: "..."
She was utterly speechless.
Kyle Morgan stepped forward, thoroughly displeased with the old woman’s behavior. "What’s with your attitude? My colleague just saved your grandson, and you have the nerve to turn around and blame her?"
