Chapter 467: Chapter 467: The Cutest Orangutan
Jude Sherman smiled at the two young women. "Yes, thanks to Ms. Jennings, the zoo’s numbers for the past two days have been fantastic. All of us here are very grateful to her."
Renee Jennings arched a brow and smiled. "Then I’m honored."
The van slowly pulled into the zoo’s private parking lot.
After they got out of the car, Jude Sherman asked, "Ms. Jennings, Miss Fuller, Mr. Conway, would you like to rest for a bit first, or shall we start the tour?"
"Director Stone," Renee Jennings said with a light laugh, "let’s go see Bonnie first. We can take our time with the tour after we’ve helped her."
Hearing this, Jude Sherman looked grateful. "Then I’ll have to trouble you. Thank you."
The group arrived at the Orangutan Pavilion.
Renee Jennings spent 200 points in the System Mall to redeem a Hominid Language Item Card.
Worried that a large group might scare the already fragile Bonnie, only Renee Jennings and Hilary went over to see her.
Bonnie was sitting in a tree. You could feel her sorrow and loneliness just from the sight of her back.
"Bonnie," Hilary called out. "Ms. Jennings is here to see you!"
Bonnie clutched a leaf in her hand, giving no reaction to Hilary’s words.
"Bonnie, time for a snack! We have some lychees, your favorite," Hilary tried again, hoping to get her attention.
Bonnie still didn’t respond.
Hilary turned to Renee Jennings, her face etched with worry. "Ms. Jennings, Bonnie’s been like this for a while. She won’t eat unless you put the food right up to her mouth."
Renee Jennings gave a slight nod. "Let’s get closer."
The two of them approached Bonnie. Hearing their movements, she finally showed a flicker of reaction, tilting her head for a brief glance before returning to her previous state.
Renee Jennings moved to stand in front of her and said gently, "Hello, Bonnie. We spoke on Hilary’s phone the day before yesterday. Do you remember me?"
There was a gentleness about her, and Bonnie’s unfocused eyes finally landed on her.
"Do you remember me?" Renee Jennings asked again with a smile.
Bonnie nodded slowly. "I remember. You’re the human who can understand what I say."
"That’s right." Renee Jennings extended a hand toward her. "I’m so glad you remember me. I flew all the way here just to see you. My name is Renee."
Bonnie blinked, looking bewildered. "To see me? But why?"
Seeing that she didn’t pull away, Renee Jennings gently rested her hand on Bonnie’s head. "Hilary told me you were unhappy, so I came to see what I could do to cheer you up."
"Really?" A flicker of surprise crossed Bonnie’s eyes. "You... you want to make me happy?"
Renee Jennings nodded. "Of course."
Bonnie seemed confused. "Really? I thought everyone only liked Sasha and Layla."
"Why would you think that?" Renee Jennings frowned slightly, gently stroking her head. "Bonnie is very cute," she said softly. "I like you very much."
Perhaps because it had been so long since anyone had said they liked her, Bonnie’s lip quivered, and her eyes reddened, glistening with unshed tears.
"Really? Do you really like me?"
"Really," Renee Jennings said with a soft laugh. "And there are two other people who like you just as much as I do. Would you like to meet them?"
Hearing this, Bonnie held back her tears and asked curiously, "There are other humans who like me?"
"That’s right." Renee Jennings asked with a smile, "Would you like to meet them?"
Bonnie hesitated for a couple of seconds, then nodded. "Okay. If they’re humans like you, I’ll like them."
Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow, the smile on her lips deepening. "So, you like me, huh, Bonnie?"
"Yeah!" Bonnie nodded vigorously.
"Then wait here a moment." Renee Jennings took a few steps and called out to her two friends not far away, "Michelle, Zachary! Bonnie’s willing to meet you!"
Hearing that Bonnie was willing to meet them, Michelle Fuller jumped in excitement. "YES!"
Zachary Conway saw this and cheered inwardly: ’So cute! How can one girl be so cute?’
"Bonnie!" Michelle Fuller jogged over, calling out with cheerful energy, "Dearest Bonnie, I’m here!"
"Bonnie, I’m here, too!" Zachary Conway called out, seemingly infected by her enthusiasm.
The two of them came to stand before Bonnie.
Michelle Fuller waved at her. "Dearest Bonnie, it’s so nice to meet you. I’m Michelle."
Zachary Conway followed her lead. "Adorable Bonnie, it’s great to meet you. I’m Zachary."
Michelle Fuller glanced at him, teasing, "Why not call yourself Zachy, or Zach-Zach?"
Hearing this, Zachary Conway turned back to greet Bonnie again. "Dearest Bon— I’m Zach-Zach."
Michelle Fuller had to stifle a laugh, not expecting him to actually go along with it so readily.
Bonnie tilted her head, looking curiously at the two of them. She blinked her big, round eyes, pointed at Zachary Conway, then at Michelle Fuller, and then brought her two large thumbs together, tapping them against each other in a cute gesture.
"What does that mean?" Michelle Fuller asked in confusion.
Hilary, however, understood the gesture and helped explain, "Bonnie is saying you two are a couple."
"A couple?" Michelle Fuller frowned. "A couple of what?"
Hilary blinked, not daring to say anything more for fear of misspeaking.
Renee Jennings chimed in at the perfect moment. "She says you’re a pair of goofballs, even more childish than she is."
"Huh?" Michelle Fuller couldn’t believe she was being called childish by an orangutan. "That’s so embarrassing."
Renee Jennings gave a resigned smile, walked over to Michelle Fuller, and took several glittering hair accessories from her small backpack.
Bonnie’s attention was instantly captured.
They were little things you clip in your hair. She had seen many humans give them to Sasha and Layla.
’Are those for them?’
Bonnie stared at the pretty hair accessories, her round eyes filled with an unspoken mix of envy and hope.
’If only I could get a gift like that someday.’
’But... she knew that day would never come.’
’Humans all liked Sasha and Layla more.’
Just as Bonnie was lost in thought, she suddenly heard someone call her name. She looked up—
Renee Jennings held up a small, crystal flower hair clip. "Bonnie, do you like the pink one or the red one?"
Bonnie stared at her, stunned. "Wh-what do you mean? Do you want me to choose for Sasha?" She lowered her head again, disappointed.
"Of course not!" Renee Jennings said, beaming at her. "The pretty hair clip is for the cutest orangutan of all: Bonnie."
Bonnie...
’That’s my name!’
Bonnie’s head snapped up. She stared in astonishment. "For... for me?"
"Yes." Renee Jennings nodded, her gaze gentle. "And if you like both colors, then I’ll give both to you."
"Two pretty clippies! Both for me?" Bonnie couldn’t believe it. Happiness had come so suddenly.
"That’s right," Renee Jennings said patiently. "Can I put them in for you?"
Bonnie immediately nodded furiously. "Okay!"
Her hair was a bit sparse, so Renee Jennings had specifically chosen clips made for children. They fit perfectly in Bonnie’s hair.
"Wow!" Michelle Fuller cheered enthusiastically. "Bonnie, you look so pretty now!"
Zachary Conway chimed in, "Yeah, yeah! You’re even more adorable!"
