Chapter 585: The Bad Human Has Started Tricking Friends Again

Chapter 585: Chapter 585: The Bad Human Has Started Tricking Friends Again

"Genevieve Hayes stole the man Wendy Lowe liked?" Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow, amused. "I don’t buy it."

"I don’t buy it either." Michelle Fuller leaned in, her face showing her disdain. "You must have it backward."

Zoe Morgan instantly bristled, incensed. "Stop spouting nonsense! Genevieve is a wonderful person! She’d never steal someone away from another person!"

"Right, she wouldn’t steal someone another person likes," Renee Jennings drawled sarcastically. "She’d just secretly have a child with him, then secretly leave the baby by his side."

Zoe Morgan’s face turned ashen, but she couldn’t refute it.

"Which orphanage did you send Wendy Lowe’s child to?" Renee Jennings demanded.

Zoe Morgan’s tightly pursed lips twitched. "I... I forgot," she said in a low voice.

"Impossible," Renee Jennings said, her tone certain. "You remember. I know you do."

Zoe Morgan closed her eyes. After a long silence, she finally uttered a few words: "Gracewood Orphanage in Wyrin."

The words had barely left her lips when Renee Jennings’s phone began to ring.

She glanced at the screen and answered the call. "Henry, are you here?"

A deep voice replied from the other end, "Just stepping out of the elevator."

"Okay." Renee Jennings glanced at Zoe Morgan, then walked to the entryway to open the door. "Henry."

Henry Stark was flanked by Kyle Morgan and Sawyer. Both men were dressed in crisp police uniforms and strode toward Renee Jennings.

Zoe Morgan saw them too and frowned, looking over in confusion.

’Why are police officers here?’

"She’s over here." Renee Jennings led the three men to Zoe Morgan.

"What’s the meaning of this?" Zoe Morgan’s face was grim, and a sense of dread washed over her.

"I recorded our previous conversation." Renee Jennings’s expression was grave, her tone solemn. "In September of 2001, Zoe Morgan posed as a hospital nurse, deliberately swapped four newborn infants, and abandoned one of them."

"I understand." Henry Stark’s dark brows drew together, and his deep, dark eyes fixed on Zoe Morgan with a piercing, intimidating light.

He pulled out his badge, his tone flat and cold. "Ms. Zoe Morgan, you are under suspicion for child abduction and abandonment. Please cooperate and come with us."

Zoe Morgan’s pupils contracted. She stared at Renee Jennings in stunned disbelief, then roared with fury and indignation, "You actually called the police on me? How could you be so heartless?"

In the face of her furious accusation, Renee Jennings simply arched an eyebrow, her composure unruffled. "I’m a good, law-abiding citizen. You committed a crime, and I reported it. Is there a problem with that?"

"You..." Zoe Morgan’s chest heaved with rage as she glared at her. "I’m your aunt! How can you be so cold-blooded?"

"Are you out of your mind?" Michelle Fuller couldn’t take it anymore and rushed forward to confront her. "Now you remember you’re her aunt? Where was this attitude before? When you swapped your own niece away, did it ever occur to you then that you were her aunt?"

Sylvia Brooks also spoke up. "You have such incredible double standards."

Zoe Morgan’s heart suddenly clenched, and she tasted blood in the back of her throat.

Sawyer took out a pair of handcuffs and cuffed her.

Zoe Morgan’s heart sank, and despair washed over her.

She dragged her feet to the door, then stopped. Turning back to look at Renee Jennings, her eyes swirled with complex emotions.

’Twenty-four years ago, I swapped her into the Jennings family. And now, she’s having me arrested for it.’

’Is this... retribution?’

Kyle Morgan and Sawyer escorted Zoe Morgan to the elevators first.

Henry Stark turned to Renee Jennings. "When you have a moment later," he said gently, "please come down to the station to give a formal statement."

"Okay." Renee Jennings nodded, watching them enter the elevator.

The elevator doors slid shut. Renee closed her own door, and when she turned around, she found herself looking into Faye Wyatt’s tear-filled eyes.

Renee Jennings frowned slightly. Just as she was about to speak, she saw Faye drop to her knees right in front of her.

"Faye!" Renee Jennings hurriedly knelt to help her up. "What are you doing? Get up, quickly."

Sylvia Brooks and Michelle Fuller were shocked as well.

"What’s wrong?"

"Did your legs just give out?"

Renee Jennings tried to pull her up, but Faye Wyatt remained kneeling, her face etched with guilt as she looked at Renee.

"Renee, I’m so sorry. If I hadn’t introduced Genevieve Hayes and Zoe Morgan to each other, none of the things that followed would have happened."

"Faye, don’t say that." Renee Jennings knelt beside her, comforting her softly. "You didn’t do it on purpose. This is on the two of them, it has nothing to do with you."

Faye Wyatt knew that given Renee Jennings’s character and principles, she would never blame her.

But she couldn’t forgive herself. She felt she was the reason Renee Jennings’s entire life had been turned upside down.

Thankfully, Renee Jennings was doing very well now; otherwise, Faye’s guilt and self-reproach would be even greater.

"That’s right, Faye. Don’t blame yourself." Michelle Fuller also crouched down to comfort her. "It’s not your fault."

Sylvia Brooks remarked with a sigh, "The gap between people is just too vast. The one who’s actually at fault feels justified, while the one who’s innocent is tormented by guilt."

Faye Wyatt let out a long sigh, her shoulders slumping. "What kind of spell does Genevieve Hayes have over people," she murmured, "to make Zoe Morgan go this crazy for her?"

"It is hard to understand." Renee Jennings helped her to her feet, her tone even. "I don’t know if the police will be able to get the whole story out of her. But regardless, she committed a crime. That’s a fact. And the law will make sure she pays the price."

**

In the interrogation room, stark white light beat down on the woman’s pale, haggard face.

"Zoe Morgan. September 2nd, 2001. Where were you?" Henry Stark stared at her, his eyes as deep and sharp as a hawk’s.

Zoe Morgan shook her head, her face expressionless. "I don’t know. I’ve forgotten."

"Zoe Morgan, I’m warning you to cooperate with this investigation!" Kyle Morgan said sternly.

"I am cooperating," Zoe Morgan said coolly. "Aren’t I sitting right here?"

Henry Stark leaned back in his chair, a humorless smile playing on his lips. "Why don’t you think a little harder. September 2nd, 2001. Weren’t you at Kenwood Hospital?"

Zoe Morgan’s gaze shifted slightly. "It was too long ago," she said coldly. "I really don’t remember."

"Fine." Henry Stark raised a dark eyebrow and stood up. "Then take your time. Let us know when you remember."

He left the interrogation room with Kyle Morgan.

"Let her stew for a while."

"Understood."

Sawyer saw them come out and smiled. "Chief, Renee and her friends are here. They’re in the conference room."

"Good." Henry Stark nodded. "You and Kai go take their statements. I’m going to see Director Lowell."

"Roger that!" Sawyer replied instantly.

After Renee and her three friends finished giving their statements and left the station, an orange twilight was slowly bleeding into the distant sky. A few birds flapped their wings and landed on a power line, chirping away.

"Hey, have you heard?"

"Heard what?"

"That awful human is trying to trick her friends again."

"Oh? We birds haven’t heard! Tell us, tell us!"

Hearing this, Renee Jennings’s pace slowed, a flicker of confusion in her eyes.

’Tricking her friends? How?’
