Chapter 586: Chapter 586: I’ll Contact the Number 3 Patron Now
Everyone noticed Renee had stopped, her gaze fixed on a few small birds. They understood without a word and stood quietly beside her, not rushing her.
"How could you not know? You’ve heard it before!"
"I forgot. Which bad human was it?"
"It’s that female human with the long, curly hair, who wears pointy shoes every day!"
"Oh, I know now! That female human is using her mom to make money!"
"Not her real mom. I heard it’s her later mom. The humans call that a ’stepmom.’"
"So who is she trying to trick this time?"
"She’s tricking her friend! Her friend has long hair too, but it’s not curly. And she’s prettier than the bad human and doesn’t yell at people."
As Renee listened to the birds’ conversation, her lips slowly tightened, and her expression grew grave.
She tilted her head up and asked softly, "Hello there. Could you tell me who that bad human is?"
The moment she finished speaking, the system’s voice sounded in her mind.
[System 009: New Level 4 Mission Triggered: Rescue. Mission Rewards: Frog Dictionary, 300 points, 3 million cash. Mission Penalty: Lightning Strike. Time Limit: 72 hours.]
The little birds had long heard from their kin that there was a very beautiful human female who could understand various animals.
Seeing Renee start a conversation with them, they weren’t the least bit afraid. Instead, they flapped their wings excitedly and circled above her head.
The little sparrow asked, "Are you the one they call Coco?"
"You might be talking about me." Renee’s lips curved into a slight smile. "But my name isn’t Coco, it’s Renee."
"Oh, oh, oh, my apologies! I remembered it wrong," the little sparrow said. "You’re Renee. I’ll remember that."
"What’s your name?" Renee asked.
The little sparrow chirped nonchalantly, "I don’t have a name. Maybe I can be called Coco."
"Alright, I’ll call you Coco, then," Renee said with a soft laugh. "A moment ago, I heard you talking to your friend about a bad human."
"Yes, yes, yes!" The little sparrow bobbed its head. "That female human is so mean! She bullies her own stepmom, and her stepmom even cooks for her!"
From the little bird’s perspective, anyone who provided food was a very, very good person.
"What did she do to her stepmom?" Renee asked.
"It was raining heavily that day, and the bad human called her stepmom on her phone..." The little sparrow trailed off, lost in recollection.
Veronica Young called her stepmom, Sharon Willows. "Auntie Susan, are you free today?"
Sharon Willows was eager to get along with her stepdaughter, so upon hearing this, she immediately replied, "Joy, I’m free. Is there something you need help with?"
"You’re so smart, Auntie Susan, you guessed right away. There is indeed something I’d like your help with." Veronica Young flopped onto the sofa, propping her feet in her boyfriend Mike’s lap.
Hearing this, Sharon Willows hurriedly said, "Joy, just tell me. If there’s any way I can help, I definitely will."
Veronica Young’s lips curved into a smug smile, but she asked politely, "Auntie Susan, my stomach has been upset lately, and I have no appetite for takeout. Would you mind making me some home-cooked dishes and bringing them to Starlight Apartments?"
"Of course I can." Sharon Willows agreed without hesitation, then asked in confusion, "Joy, what are you doing at Starlight Apartments today?"
"It’s a requirement from the brand I’m working with."
"Oh, I see. So the brand didn’t provide you with any food?"
"They did," Veronica Young said, though she was inwardly cursing the old woman for being so nosy. She came up with a casual lie. "But I don’t think any of their food compares to your cooking, Auntie Susan."
Sharon Willows was very happy to be flattered like this and quickly asked, "Joy, when do you need the food?"
"At seven-thirty tonight. Is that okay?"
"Yes, of course. I’ll go out and buy groceries right now." Sharon Willows hung up and braved the downpour to go to the supermarket.
Veronica Young tossed her phone aside and grinned. "Mike, I’ve got her."
"Babe, you’re amazing." Mike cradled her feet and planted a couple of loud kisses on them. "So, should I contact your number three fan now and tell him to be at Starlight Apartments at eight-thirty tonight?"
"Okay," Veronica Young nodded.
Around six-thirty, a delivery driver dropped off a bag of milk tea at their door.
Mike brought the milk tea inside, handing one to Veronica Young and keeping one for himself.
There was one cup left in the bag. Mike took it out, removed the lid, added something inside, stirred it a few times, and then replaced the lid, making it look untouched.
The two of them took the milk tea and drove to Starlight Apartments.
Coco the sparrow heard about what happened next from its good friend, Azalea.
Azalea had built her nest right on the windowsill of the room they went into.
She saw Veronica Young start making a call the moment she walked in the door.
"Hey, Auntie Susan, it’s still raining out. Let me know when you’re about finished, and I’ll call a car for you. Don’t take the bus; you’ll have to walk, and if you get soaked and catch a cold, Dad will be worried sick."
She was worried that if Sharon Willows took the bus and got soaked in the rain, she would stink. How disgusted would her number three fan be then?
At seven-twenty, Sharon Willows came upstairs carrying two insulated containers. Veronica Young, seeing that the rideshare trip had ended, opened the door to wait for her.
"Auntie Susan, come on in."
As soon as Sharon Willows stepped inside, Mike greeted her warmly. "Hello, Auntie Susan. Please, have a seat. Here’s a milk tea we ordered for you."
"Thank you, Milo, but you two go ahead. I’m not really used to drinking this," Sharon Willows said with a smile, waving her hand. She then began taking the food out of the insulated containers one by one.
"Auntie Susan, Milo ordered this specially for you," Veronica Young said with a smile. "You should at least try it."
"That’s right, Auntie Susan," Mike added with an honest-looking smile. "See if you like it. I picked out a hot one for you."
With both of them insisting, Sharon Willows felt it would be rude to refuse again. "Alright, I’ll just have a taste, then."
She took one sip before setting it down, smiling. "It’s very good. I just don’t drink these things often, so I’m not used to it."
Veronica Young put on a show of being a dutiful daughter. "That’s alright, Auntie Susan. I’ll order it for you more often from now on. You’ll get used to it."
"Joy, just the thought makes me so happy." Sharon Willows looked gratified and said gently, "Don’t order them for me. Save the money and enjoy them yourself."
Veronica Young was only saying it to placate her; she had no intention of actually wasting money on her stepmother.
"Hurry and eat while it’s hot," Sharon Willows urged.
"Okay." Veronica Young nodded, picked at her food for a few bites, then put down her chopsticks and stared at Sharon Willows.
"Joy, why are you looking at me like that?"
"Auntie Susan, let me do your makeup," Veronica Young said, smiling. "I’m sure you’d look beautiful with makeup on."
"Makeup?" Sharon Willows quickly waved her hands in refusal. "I’m an old woman now. Makeup wouldn’t look good on me."
"Auntie Susan, you’re only in your early forties. How are you an old woman?" Veronica Young coaxed. "Let me make you all pretty, so Dad will see you as a twenty-year-old girl again."
Sharon Willows’s face flushed, and she broke into a bashful smile. "There’s no way I could look like a twenty-year-old girl. I’d be thrilled to even look two or three years younger."
