Book 4, Chapter 33: Capability
After the talk with Wu Han, Chen Chuan took a look at Geng Zheng, Tai Dongwei, and Deng Fu’s contacts. He was going to reach out to them once he had time.
Gao Ming had told him to gather allies as soon as possible, and Chen Chuan thought it was a good idea.
Before he grew so strong that he didn’t have to worry about anything else, it was impossible for him to take care of everything alone. Setting aside the Great Crash, Chen Chuan was already unable to do everything on his own, despite being a lead investigator.
The department could assign him a team, sure, but he wouldn’t know those people, and he might not be able to work with them. Besides, they would have ties with other people in the department.
Chen Chuan could use them normally, but at crucial moments, if these people slacked off or received instructions to sabotage things, it might lead to unforeseeable outcomes. It was important to have a trustworthy team.
Perhaps it was because of this that the department gave him free slots in his team that he could assign to whoever he wanted.
He intended to give them to Luo Kaiyuan, Feng Xiaoqi, Wei Changan, and his team. They had worked together before, and they were strong and had great potential. They were his first batch of close allies.
When it came to Geng Zheng, Tai Dongwei, and Deng Fu, he knew just how strong they were. All three of them were outstanding, or the Mutual Aid Group wouldn’t have recruited them and sent them to take the unrestricted defense permit test. This showed how strong they were.
They weren’t bad people either and came from Yangzhi City, so they were made to side with each other. They should be working under the agent because they weren’t official citizens, which gave Chen Chuan a good chance to recruit them.
He cast a glance at his second self and noticed that he was still blurry. It was hard to tell how long this was going to last.
Chen Chuan’s gaze sharpened. This situation and the voice from the radio made him suspect that the person who did the recording was a martial arts master.
If he didn’t have his second self, Chen Chuan wasn’t sure whether he would have been able to withstand the mental attack.
Was Ji Xinming using the martial arts master’s mental energy or did the martial arts master ask him to do this? He couldn’t tell.
Despite knowing that Chen Chuan had joined the purity faction, they approached him and used such a method. There had to be a reason for this.
After some thinking, Chen Chuan came up with a lot of possibilities, but he couldn’t be sure of any of them.
He could only be wary.
Based on what Zhuan Liang told him, once the faction completed processing everything, someone would send him pure essence. He had left for Mistlight Island and Luowang Island, but now that he was back, the purity faction would soon send someone to contact him.
He could mention this to his contact person.
Chen Chuan continued going through his messages and replying to them one by one when he came across some messages from Border Fusion.
One of them was from Yan Yi saying that Sancheng Huang was really capable and had already stopped several possible attacks on the company.
Upon seeing this, Chen Chuan went to Border Fusion’s security management platform and retrieved the saved security footage. There were indeed some attacks on the company.
Most of them were just testing the company’s strength. Some people had learned that Chen Chuan was on holiday and left Central City, so they decided to attack the company. However, they learned that the company still had someone powerful guarding it and stopped bothering them.
This was the norm in the competition among companies.
Chen Chuan left the company portal and went to the second message.
It was also from Yan Yi. It seemed like negotiations were going smoothly. However, in order to ensure that the company could expand successfully, Meng Shu was going to need to go to the island nations to inspect them and sign contracts. Right now, they were scheduling things.
The company was going to bring Sancheng Huang, as well as hire a reputable agent company with useful security guards. She asked him whether there was anything else they needed to pay attention to or to reinforce.
Chen Chuan considered it. If Sancheng Huang were there, everything would be fine. After all, he was an islander and was familiar with the island nations.
Besides, the power of the three main schools had been reduced. Azure Dragon, Ocean Development Corporation, and the Great Shun Republic were keeping a close eye on them, so Meng Shu’s general safety was ensured.
But they would need to pay attention to the people the agent company hired.
Chen Chuan sent a message to the company to tell them that he was back and that he would find time to come over to discuss this issue.
By the time he finished replying to all the messages, the motorcade reached the Martial Order District. He asked them to head straight to the Resolution Department. Once he was there, he gave Wu Quan a rundown of the situation and handed over Ji Xinming and his two companions.
Chen Chuan knew that since this concerned two factions, the Resolution Department might be unable to resolve this issue. It was likely that he would need to ask the purity faction to step forward and help him deal with this.
When he was done, he went back to his house and took a shower before going to put the short saber he got from Yejian Hong on a saber rack in his display room.
He took a few steps back and nodded in satisfaction.
His collection had expanded a lot during the few days the Fu-Mu Entity propagated.
He’d gained the assistant general’s sword, Gongying Changxiu and his fellow disciples’ sabers, Chang Kuanghai’s axe, and Astrid’s armor and weapons.
But Chen Chuan was still far from filling up his display room. It was quite some time away from needing to be expanded, so he told himself to work harder.
After admiring the weapons he collected, Chen Chuan left the display room and went to do his daily training.
Around an hour after Ji Xinming’s team was sent to the Resolution Department, Gray Shell Office’s legal team arrived and requested that the trio be released on bail, since they had no prior criminal record and no bounty.
The Resolution Department rejected their request, because the trio were being held in custody under suspicion for attacking a high-ranking officer of the Resolution Department. Chen Chuan had personally reported them and arrested them for blocking his way.
Most importantly, these three had interfered with Safe Shield’s domain, which prevented him from being able to assess the situation.
If they considered the bigger picture, the three had interfered with law enforcement in a major way. Since the Fu-Mu Entity had only recently finished propagating and the city was under heightened security, the Resolution Department could absolutely detain them using security protocol for special circumstances.
The legal team stayed for a long time in the Resolution Department, but they didn’t get what they wanted, so they could only leave with dark expressions.
After the night, Chen Chuan received a lot of messages from unknown senders. All of them were requesting to talk to him, but he asked Safe Shield to block them.
When the morning passed, he received messages from his friends. Tan Zhi was among them.
“Chen Chuan, Ms. Wei came to me today and said that someone knows that we contact each other frequently, so they asked whether I could ask you to release the people you arrested for my sake. I know that I’m not great enough to ask you to do something like that for me, so I could only promise Ms. Wei to ask you about it.”
“Got it. Please tell her that this matter can only be resolved by official protocol,” Chen Chuan said.
“Got it. I’ll tell her that,” Tan Zhi answered.
Chen Chuan sensed that Ms. Wei didn’t ask this of him because she wanted the three to be released. She was indirectly warning him about the group’s power.
Right after Chen Chuan finished talking to Tan Zhi, Pan Xiaode called him, and it was for the same reason.
“Listen, Chen Chuan, I don’t want to talk to you about this, but my dad insisted. Just do whatever is right, you hear me? You don’t have to show me respect or whatever.”
Chen Chuan laughed. “Sure.”
They weren’t the only ones to contact him. The Martial Valor University lecturers he knew or had only met before sent him messages to talk about this. They also indirectly suggested that he try to ease tensions with these people, because if he continued digging his heels in and pushing back, things might end badly for him.
Chen Chuan narrowed his eyes. The group sending everyone to talk to him had such powerful backgrounds and great influence that most of the people he knew had to willingly or reluctantly approach him.
Aside from making Chen Chuan relent, they might also be trying to put pressure on him.
Anyone else in his shoes might have caved under the pressure.
But Chen Chuan could tell that even if this group could affect the people around him, they couldn’t affect the Resolution Department. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have needed to approach him. This gave him a boost in confidence.
Still, he had to consider certain things. Asking the people around him to persuade him to let Ji Xinming’s group go was just one of the more obvious tactics. They were likely to pull more tricks, so he had to be on guard.
Hence, he sent his friends messages to be careful.
Just then, he heard a voice in his Realm Pass. “Hello, is this Lead Investigator Chen?”
Surprise flashed in Chen Chuan’s eyes. Safe Shield didn’t react to the voice. Then, he realized that the voice hadn’t actually come from his Realm Pass. It had been projected onto it through a biofield or mental energy. The Realm Pass simply served as a medium, which meant that the person shouldn’t be too far away from him.
Chen Chuan stood up and went to the balcony to look out, and he saw an SUV parked across the road. The person inside seemed to have noticed him. “Hello, fellow faction member. I’ve come on orders to deliver what you need. Could you come down and pick it up?”
The moment he heard how this person referred to him, Chen Chuan figured out who he was. He nodded and immediately went downstairs. Once he stepped out of his house, he walked over to the SUV.
The door opened, and a slightly plump middle-aged man in a white shirt squeezed out of the SUV.
He had average looks, and no one would be able to see anything special about him if he stood in a crowd. He was just like any other pencil pusher, though most office workers nowadays had implants in them. This one, however, didn’t. He was completely unaltered.
The middle-aged man smiled and extended his hand. “Hello, Lead Investigator Chen. I’m Chang Dong, the new person-in-charge of the purity faction in Jibei Road’s Central City.”
