Book 4, Chapter 89: Gap

Chen Chuan caressed the Frost King Saber and sensed that it still had some energy left, so he brought it up again and swung it at the air to open a small gap that was about an inch long.

Then, he focused and swung the saber again. The gap closed.

He did this several more times. After a while, the Frost King Saber started reflecting a wave of exhaustion to Chen Chuan.

This meant that regardless of whether he opened a gap or closed one, he used up the saber’s energy. Its mutated tissue became exhausted.

Chen Chuan examined the blade. Perhaps it was due to the suppression from the World Ring, but closing gaps used up much less energy than opening them.

If he could open a gap once with the maximum output of energy in a day, then with that same amount of energy, he could close a gap twice or thrice.

This was useful. It meant that when he trained, he could immediately close the gap if some existence tried to come over or someone noticed something abnormal.

Because of this, he wouldn’t need to limit his training time to four hours. He could train for longer, and if any problems occurred, he would just close the gap.

He would also not need to put too much attention on movement outside. Dawncall could take care of it alone, which would increase his training efficiency.

But he still needed to take something into consideration. In a little over a month, the gap in the World Ring was going to close. This would make it much harder to open gaps, and the time the gaps stayed open would become shorter.

It meant that he had around one month left of his golden training hours, perhaps even less.

He had to get stronger faster so that he could reach his breakthrough.

Chen Chuan put his saber down and poured a bottle of chemicals over the charred stains on the floor. In an instant, the area corroded. Then, he took out a knife and cut it off to put it into a bag he had prepared beforehand.

Strange things often happened when he opened a gap, so he always had the tools ready. If he took care of everything properly, he could get rid of all traces of his training and prevent future problems.

If that ended up with him damaging the airship? That was perfectly normal for a powerful martial artist, so no one was going to think much about it.

Once he was done, he went and pulled a rope attached to a bell in the cabin. The airship crew had worked with him multiple times at this point, so after hearing the bell, they started heading back.

They were quite curious about Chen Chuan’s training, because they couldn’t understand why he had to train in the sky, but they were senior employees and knew that they should keep their mouths and curiosity in line.

Once the airship returned to Central City’s airspace, Chen Chuan got quite a number of messages. He replied to them all, but one of them was about United Might. That one in particular caught his attention.

Although most of Safe Shield’s monitoring resources were shifted to the Linacrox Union’s diplomatic delegation and the Union’s representatives, Chen Chuan didn’t relax when it came to monitoring United Might.

At the same time, in order to make sure that he had information about what was going on inside the company, he occasionally sent officers for sudden inspections of the company.

The excuses were handed to him on a silver platter. Fan Mo and his three teammates were proven to have ties with United Might’s headquarters, and they had caused considerable damage to Central City’s safety. In order to prevent such things from happening again, they had to monitor the branch even more tightly.

Anyway, the message said that United Might had submitted an application to enter the merged space to carry out their duty.

They might be saying that they were applying for permission, but in truth, the companies were using the agreement from the days of the mega alliance to demand entry. The municipal government was also working with them, so this procedure was not that effective in keeping the companies out.

It could be said that as long as the companies were accepted by Central City, then if they applied to go to the merged space, they would be cleared to do so.

Fortunately, the World Ring Defense System and the Resolution Department could inspect all those entering the merged space. If the members didn’t correlate with the submitted list, both departments had the right to take action.

After Chen Chuan saw the application, he immediately retrieved the list of names from the team United Might was sending to the merged space.

The two Black Steel grade security guards in charge of protecting the branch’s person-in-charge were on the list.

There were also some names that were not in the employees’ records. A note at the end stated that these people were currently not in Central City and were on their way here. They would arrive in a few days.

The list felt off, though. Black Steel grade security guards were strong, but only in regular settings. They weren’t strong enough to join the fight for the artifact.

Unless, of course, the security guards weren’t going to fight for it.

Could that really be the case, though?

Could United Might have gone through all the trouble of sending them into the merged space to take a stroll?

Chen Chuan was certain that the two weren’t the real fighting force of United Might.

Since their first team had been eliminated, and the new team had yet to come, what were they going to do about their fighting strength?

After some thinking, Chen Chuan’s mind wandered to the embryo of the active biosentient entity.

He had fought against an active biosentient entity before, so he had a deep impression of it. This was also why he could instinctively think about it.

He spoke to Safe Shield. “You mentioned before that embryos of active biosentient entities don’t have much fighting power and can only send or receive messages. Is there any technology that can make it stronger? You can also include technology that is still in development or only exists in theory.”

“There is a developing technology that might achieve such effects. It would require the fusion between a human and an embryo of an active biosentient entity. This would achieve coexistence and compound their strengths.

“But there are strict requirements for this. First, the human has to have a unique mental talent. Second, the human’s mind must be compatible with that of the active biosentient entity. It is the only way to achieve a high fusion success rate.

“There is something to take note of, though. Even with the above conditions fulfilled, not every attempt will be successful, and every failure will deal irreversible damage to both parties, which will lower the chances of a successful fusion in the subsequent attempts.

“In the case of success, getting out of the fused state is also a problem. According to current studies, if the human and active biosentient entity remain in the fused state for a prolonged period of time, there is a chance that the two will truly become one. There is currently no research data that can be used as reference for the consequences and its impact.”

Chen Chuan retrieved Yang Ling’s photo to examine her face.

If his guess was correct, Yang Ling had a unique talent. This meant that she fit the conditions.

Only such a bioweapon would have the power to fight for the artifact against the government and other organizations.

If they had no other choice, this was the most likely path to take.

But the active biosentient entity wasn’t on the list, and neither was Yang Ling. Chen Chuan could make use of this. If things were really as he predicted, he could ruin their plan.

He took another look at when United Might applied to go to the merged space. It was supposed to happen at 5 p.m., on the fourth of October.

He put his hand on his Realm Pass. “Guys, we have an important mission. Keep an eye out for my messages.”

Back in United Might’s basement, Yang Ling was controlling Water Deity and slurping nutritional fluid. Tendrils extended out of their body to the box containing nutritional fluid so that they could absorb it.

Their body had grown larger.

But a stronger body also meant greater expenditure. It was fine, though. They had nutritional fluid to supply them with energy and could enter a state that used a minimal amount of energy.

However, once she was in the merged space, she would no longer have this advantage. While Water Deity could hunt to replenish their energy, they would have to spend a lot of time eating and wouldn’t be able to do much else.

United Might had set up a team at the center just for that purpose. They would be hunting prey and providing logistical support for them.

All they had to do was locate the artifact and deal with crucial targets.

As they ate, Yang Ling could feel her thoughts getting closer to those of Water Deity, as if she was becoming Water Deity, and Water Deity becoming her. This was something that was bound to happen once their bodies and minds fused.

Perhaps, soon, they would have a hard time telling each other apart. Her human side would fade, and she would become a completely independent active biosentient entity and a bioweapon for the company’s use.

They heard footsteps. The assistant appeared before them and stared with a fervent gaze at the now larger active biosentient entity.

“We’ve submitted the application, and the time is set. We will set off tomorrow evening. When the time comes, we’ll provide cover for you,” she said.

She got a response projected to her Realm Pass.

“You don’t have to worry about a lack of manpower. The headquarters’ second team is already waiting outside the city,” the assistant replied.

“While the Resolution Department is keeping a close eye on us and stopping us from going into the merged space using procedures, we submitted our application, and our martial artists fit their safety threshold. They can at most hold us back for another day before they’re forced to let us go.”

Water Deity gave her a look.

The assistant cast a glance at her Realm Pass, and her expression turned cold. “Don’t worry. As long as you find the artifact, we’ll remove you from Water Deity. We haven’t found another person with a talent as unique as yours. We won’t waste it on the operation, but I need to remind you that your actions will determine how long you stay fused. The sooner you find what the company needs, the sooner you will get out of Water Deity.”

Then, she bowed and left. Soon, she faded into the dim tunnel.

Yang Ling watched her leave. After a moment, she looked down and swayed Water Deity’s tail while absorbing the nutritional fluid around her.
