Roadmap to the Boundless Sky

Book 4 Chapter 90: Tunnel

Book 4, Chapter 90: Tunnel

It was 3:30 p.m. on the fourth of October.

United Might’s branch company sent out a truck convoy. With multiple domain entities guiding them, they headed to a designated tunnel leading to the merged space.

There were three types of tunnels: those that belonged to the government, those that were exclusive to certain companies, and emergency tunnels.

United Might was going to use its own exclusive tunnel.

Fifteen minutes later, at 4 p.m., the convoy reached its destination.

Most tunnels leading to the merged space were set near tram stations, and this was no exception. The tram station had been cleared out in advance, and they had twenty minutes to use it.

Once they got out, the assistant went ahead of everyone else. Beside her were Wild Beast and Eel. The two Black Steel grade martial artists wore thick protective gear and had covered even their heads.

Behind them were three White Iron grade and one Yellow Bronze grade security guards. They had joined as reinforcements.

United Might classified its Third Limit security guards into White Iron, Yellow Bronze, and Black Steel grades. White Iron grade security guards had the ability to act alone in the merged space. Yellow Bronze grade security guards could fight against regular royally appointed warriors, and Black Steel grade security guards had fighting experience against ranked royally appointed warriors.

Since United Might had quite a lot of influence within the industry, mercenary groups that had ties with them also accepted and used this ranking system, so it could be seen as a somewhat standard assessment criteria.

Aside from them, more than twenty logisticians and technicians joined the mission.

Due to the two Black Steel grade security guards, this team was slightly stronger than a standard unit of the World Ring Defense System, but not by much.

They had quite a large team, so they didn’t take the elevator. Instead, they took the safety channel to head down.

The group walked down the spacious and long slope. Their footsteps were clear. Yang Ling was with them using Water Deity’s camouflage abilities.

While they were quite large, they remained agile. Even the team members close to them didn’t notice them.

Once the group reached the bottom of the slope, the assistant said, “The checkpoint is right ahead. Just pass through it one by one.”

Then, she had everyone form a long queue to pass through the checkpoint. In an instant, they felt a domain envelope and scan all of them.

Since there was quite a distance between each team member, when one passed through the checkpoint, the second wouldn’t have even taken the first step into the checkpoint.

Yang Ling lowered their body and charged forward. They had put a lot of attention to mapping their route and moved forward by sticking close to each team member. When they got close to a person, their domain would sync with their biofield, which allowed them to hide their presence.

Even though each team member was different, and their biofields differed in terms of strength and intensity, Yang Ling moved quickly and could perform domain interference. Before any signal could be sent alerting the checkpoint about the appearance of a domain with fluctuating wavelengths, Yang Ling had already passed through.

She crossed the thirty-meter-long passage in less than a second. Despite their unique body, they did not make unnecessary movements.

After everyone passed through the checkpoint, it was still quiet in the area.

When the assistant saw that everyone had passed through and the checkpoint did not sound an alarm, she looked up, believing that they had cleared this stage. When she led them further down the passage and walked through the safety gate, though, her expression froze.

Chen Chuan stood before the train. He wore a hat and a protective overcoat, which made him incredibly menacing.

Behind him were Yuan Qiuyuan and Qin Qingque. They, too, were in full gear. The rest of his team stood behind the fortifications and machine guns of the train station in a horizontal line. There were even guns trained on them on the train.

The guns had their firing angles calibrated. If they fired from this close to United Might’s team, even the Black Steel grade security guards dressed in protective clothing and standing in a spacious area would have a hard time surviving.

The assistant motioned for her people to stop and walked forward to bow slightly to Chen Chuan. She said politely, “Lead Investigator Chen, we’ve received permission from Central City to go to the merged space and carry out our duty. May I ask why you’re here?”

“Thank you for providing support to the military in the merged space. I’ve checked the list of names you submitted, but we’re in a tense situation. Multiple armed forces that are a threat to Central City’s safety have entered the city, so we need to inspect and verify all members who are going to the merged space twice. I hope you will understand,” Chen Chuan explained.

“Of course. We respect and obey all of Central City’s laws. We will cooperate with the inspection.” The assistant showed her understanding.

She then turned to the side with a sincere expression that said, “Please go ahead.”

Chen Chuan made a sign, and Qin Qingque went forward to cross-check the names with the people in the team by using her Realm Pass to scan all the present members of United Might.

Yang Ling was quietly stuck to a wall. Even though they had passed the domain inspection, they felt uneasy. The long and sharp claws at the end of their tendrils flickered about uneasily. When they saw Qin Qingque get closer, they cautiously shifted to the side.

They didn’t dare to look at Chen Chuan. Even though they weren’t a martial artist, Water Deity had a large amount of information regarding martial artists, which allowed them to understand how sensitive these people’s senses were. They could notice the slightest change, and that was especially so for martial artists skilled in biofield detection. They were incredibly sensitive to biofields and domains. Fortunately, Water Deity was an active biofield entity and could perfectly hide their domain.

Since there weren’t many people in the team, Qin Qingque took less than half an hour to cross-check the list. She came back and saluted Chen Chuan.

“Sir, I’ve cross-checked everyone. Everyone is on the list.”

The assistant watched them. She didn’t show any expression, but once she heard this, she raised her chin haughtily.

Chen Chuan turned to the assistant and said, “Mrs. Ling, I need to ask. Did you bring any extra people or bioweapons along with you, aside from those on the list?”

Mrs. Ling’s heart skipped a beat, but she shook her head and said, “No.”

Chen Chuan looked at her calmly before turning to a seemingly empty spot. Then, he asked calmly, “Are you sure? If that’s the case, why is that active biosentient entity here?”

Shock filled Mrs. Ling’s heart, but she feigned surprise and asked, “What active biosentient entity? Are you joking?”

Chen Chuan ignored her and kept staring at that spot. Bright light shone from his eyes, and a wave of mental energy spread outward.

Immediately after, an invisible ripple appeared in the spot where he was staring, and everyone could see the outline of a rather large creature.

While active biosentient entities could hide their domains, they couldn’t deceive Chen Chuan’s mind, especially after he overlapped with his second self. His mind was incredibly sensitive, so nothing could escape his detection.

Yang Ling wanted to keep hiding, but the mental attack prevented them from hiding their domain. The camouflage effect faded, and their giant body was exposed.

Upon seeing this, Chen Chuan’s team trained their guns on Yang Ling.

It made them feel threatened, and a thought filled their mind.

Carry out the backup plan. Now.

The company’s original plan was for them to go with the team. It would be better if they could enter the merged space smoothly, but if they ran into obstacles or were discovered, they were to use the second plan.

Force their way through.

Yang Ling’s mental energy allowed her to find a way into the merged space and even the other world. Once she fused with Water Deity, her mental energy became stronger, and the moment they got close to the edge of the merged space, they could create a gap that would lead them to it.

As long as they were not caught, United Might could find ways to shirk responsibility. Even if they couldn’t, as long as Yang Ling made it to the merged space, they would have a chance to grab the artifact.

They jumped, and their body became vague as they left behind an afterimage. Gunshots filled the air as all the machineguns fired at them, but Yang Ling was moving too quickly. None of the bullets landed on them.

In truth, with Water Deity’s sturdy body, they could fight against the dangerous creatures in the merged space, so they weren’t scared of bullets, but the projectiles would affect their speed and movements, so it would be better for them to force their way in the safest manner possible.

Yang Ling wasn’t a martial artist and didn’t have any fighting experience. If she had been alone, no matter how capable she was, she wouldn’t have been able to react to this sort of situation, but once she fused with Water Deity, this was no longer a problem to them.

All of Yang Ling’s hesitation and cowardice were squashed down, and they quickly and calmly came up with the most logical plan to deal with the current situation.

After jumping around for a bit, they suddenly sped up. They passed through a gap between bullets and went straight to where the train was.

When they jumped forward, the fluttering fins on their back started flashing. At the same time, the air trembled. The empty space ahead of them suddenly melted away to reveal an opening.

Just as they were about to dash into it, they froze in the air.

They turned around and saw that one of their legs had been captured. Then, their world spun.

Boom!

Chen Chuan threw the huge body onto the floor.
