Book 4, Chapter 100: Authorization

A little over an hour later, Chen Chuan left Martial Valor University. There were quite a number of Resolution Department cars outside, and Resolution Department officers filled the square. They saluted him when he came out.

Every officer that came here had to accept the strict regulations from the no-confidence clause. All their communications and activities would be monitored by Safe Shield. If anyone broke the clause, they would suffer the harshest punishments in order to ensure that no details would be leaked over the next few hours.

Chen Chuan intended to go back to the Resolution Department and get some answers while the no-confidence clause was active.

The logistician opened the door for him. Before he went in, he cast a glance at the Arcane Palace, but the roof was empty. The woman in red could no longer be seen. Instead, a red scarf was fluttering around his neck.

Chen Chuan turned around and got into the limousine. Once the door closed, the motorcade headed to the Resolution Department.

When he was about to reach it around nine minutes later, he heard a chime from his Realm Pass.

It was a message from Lead Investigator Wen. Judging by the format, it was timed. Chen Chuan raised an eyebrow in puzzlement. His gaze turned grim as he read the contents.

After some thinking, he contacted Safe Shield. “Has Lead Investigator Wen returned?”

“Lead Investigator Wen is currently carrying out a secret mission, which can’t be looked into. He has not sent any messages back.”

“Was Lead Investigator Han in White Bird District yesterday?” Chen Chuan asked.

“Yes, since 5 p.m.. As the person in charge of the safety of the politicians, he has been in White Bird District protecting them. He is still there, even now.”

Chen Chuan sank into contemplative silence.

After a while, the motorcade returned to the Resolution Department and stopped in the square.

Chen Chuan remained inside the limousine for a while before striding into the Resolution Department. The place was the same as when he had left. There was still scarcely anyone in the department. When they saw him, they quickly stood up to salute him.

Chen Chuan took an elevator up and went to his office. After checking the time, he brewed himself a cup of tea and waited.

At 3 a.m., he picked up the phone receiver on his table and called a number.

The person seemed to have been waiting for him. After just two rings, he answered. “Hello, Shao Xinquan speaking.”

“Officer Shao, it’s Chen Chuan.”

“Lead Investigator Chen!” Shao Xinquan, who was the young officer Lead Investigator Wen had entrusted with secret instructions before he left, answered back much more loudly.

“Lead Investigator Wen sent a message to me saying that if he doesn’t come until 3 a.m. and doesn’t send any messages back, it will mean that his operation failed and I should contact you,” Chen Chuan stated.

When Shao Xinquan spoke next, he seemed to be suppressing his emotions. “Yes. Before Lead Investigator Wen left, he told me about this. H-He said...”

He took a moment to steady his voice. “He said that if he didn’t send any messages back, all of us in his team are to listen to your orders.”

“Alright. From now on, I’ll be taking over your team. Please get ready and be on standby for my orders,” Chen Chuan instructed.

“Understood! Lead Investigator Chen, I have some things Lead Investigator Wen entrusted to me before he left. He said that if you contacted me, I should hand them over to you,” Shao Xinquan continued.

Surprise lit up Chen Chuan’s face. “Would you like to bring it over, or should I send someone to liaise with you?”

“Thank you for the offer, Lead Investigator Chen, but I’m nearby. I’ll be there soon.”

Shao Xinquan was in Martial Order District and returned to the department around ten minutes later. Upon seeing Chen Chuan, he handed over a briefcase to him.

Chen Chuan examined the documents and recordings inside and got the general gist of what had happened.

If he had learned about all these things before going to Martial Valor University but died there, Lead Investigator Wen’s efforts would have been in vain. All that he had collected would never see the light of day.

Chen Chuan asked Shao Xinquan to wait for orders before tapping on his Realm Pass. “Zou Jinxin speaking.”

“Captain Zou, it’s me, Chen Chuan. I need you to mobilize your team right now. Can you do that?”

Without any hesitation, Zou Jinxin answered, “Of course.”

“That’s settled, then.”

While in his guard post in Martial Order District, Zou Jinxin spat out the cigarette in his mouth and tapped his Realm Pass. Then, he sent out notifications to the long list of names in his contact list.

“Lead Investigator Chen summoned us, boys. Captain Xu said that while he’s not around, we’re to listen to Lead Investigator Chen. Don’t mess up when it matters most! I’ll beat up whoever messes up!”

Chen Chuan left his office and went to the elevator to go up to the top floor.

He then went to Wu Quan’s office. Since Wu Quan was still being interrogated, he wasn’t inside. Chen Chuan stopped in front of the door, took out a key, and opened it.

Safe Shield spoke up. “Lead Investigator Chen, Director Wu gave you the authority to enter his office before leaving. Please go in.”

Chen Chuan went to Wu Quan’s desk. There was a document and envelope on top of it.

He first read the document with multiple signatures at the bottom. They caught his attention, so after a while, he said, “Safe Shield, scan and archive it.”

“Understood.”

Chen Chuan picked up the envelope and opened it. There was a note inside, along with a password that could temporarily grant him the highest authorization with Safe Shield.

He immediately recited it.

“Lead Investigator Chen, the password you recited is correct. Upon inspection, your identity, voice, and biofield match what is recorded in your file in my database. You have been given the highest authority for the time being. Please wait a while. Soon, you will receive a phone call,” Safe Shield stated.

A flicker of emotion thrummed in Chen Chuan’s heart. He stood still and waited quietly. Two minutes passed, and the secure VoIP desk phone on Wu Quan’s desk started ringing.

Chen Chuan grabbed the phone receiver and heard a voice he recognized. “Lead Investigator Chen.”

“Mr. Cao?” Chen Chuan asked.

“It’s me. I need to tell you certain things. I’ll be acting as a messenger for some of them, while others are what I want to tell you. This is what’s going on,” Mr. Cao said grimly.

Chen Chuan listened carefully. After around seven minutes, he replied, “Alright. I understand. Please cooperate with me for what’s going to happen next.”

After the conversation, Chen Chuan put down the phone receiver before grabbing the phone again to contact all those related to the case.

Once he was done, he returned to his office, took his hat from the hanger, put on his overcoat, grabbed the Frost King Saber, and left.

At that moment, the meeting between the politicians and the Union was still going on in White Bird District. When it was a little over 5 a.m., they ended the meeting for now.

After most of the politicians and negotiators left, someone went up to Han Fu and whispered to him.

He ordered the officer next to him to take over his remaining duties while he left. When he arrived at an emergency exit, he vanished from the domain inspection entity’s range for half a minute. Then, he walked out of the other side of the emergency exit.

Once he left the meeting hall, his limousine was already waiting. His logistician stood beside the opened door, but Han Fu looked past him.

The meeting hall was built on high ground that faced Central City. When the morning sun shone behind it, it cast the square partially in light.

Various important politicians were leaving the place in their limousines. The representatives left in groups escorted by security guards armed to the teeth, some of whom saluted him.

He felt like he was looking down at these people from a superior position. Han Fu extended his arm, as if he wanted to grab something, but he stopped himself and righted his hat instead before walking down the stairs.

Once he settled down in his limousine, he frowned and touched his right arm, then moved his uninjured arm away.

“To the Resolution Department.”

His motorcade left the square and headed back to the main city area.

Half an hour later, the motorcade got onto the bridge. Han Fu kept his eyes trained forward while his expression remained flat.

A while later, he put his hand on his Realm Pass. “Safe Shield, how’s the situation in the department?”

“Everything is normal, Lead Investigator Han,” Safe Shield answered.

After a brief pause, Han Fu asked, “Did you see Lead Investigator Chen?”

“Lead Investigator Chen came back to the department in the afternoon, then left after 11:30 p.m.. He didn’t contact us after that. Would you like to call him?” Safe Shield asked.

Han Fu didn’t answer immediately, as if he was thinking about something. After a while, he said, “No need.”

His motorcade left the bridge and was about to get on the road leading to Martial Order District. Suddenly, he felt uneasy and said, “Don’t take this road. Go another way.”

He didn’t offer any explanation, but the motorcade took another path. This road led to Majestic Light District.

Half an hour later, Han Fu asked again, “Any news from the department, Safe Shield?”

Safe Shield’s answer remained the same. “Everything’s been normal in the department over the past hour. There are some new security reports. Would you like me to send them to your Realm Pass?”

“No need,” Han Fu declined.

At that moment, his driver said, “Sir, Majestic Light District is right ahead. Should we go to the Department of Administrative Affairs or the municipal government?”

Han Fu cast a glance at the area ahead before quickly saying, “Take a U-turn. We’re going back to the Resolution Department.”

His driver didn’t ask any questions and just turned his steering wheel. The motorcade went back to Martial Order District.
