Chapter 600 - 599: Demons and Monsters

Chapter 600: Chapter 599: Demons and Monsters

Tuesday, almost 1:00 PM. The Plastic Surgery Center at the Affiliated Hospital.

Wang Chuan had just finished lunch and a quick ten-minute nap. After washing his face, he sat down behind his desk, ready to start the afternoon’s work, when the office door was suddenly thrown open with a BANG.

Furious, Wang Chuan was about to slam his hand on the desk and stand up when he looked up and saw Yan Ziruo rushing in, her face grim.

"Ziruo, what’s wrong? Who got you so upset?"

Yan Ziruo strode closer and shoved her phone right in Wang Chuan’s face.

She held it so close it almost touched the tip of his nose.

Wang Chuan glanced at the screen, then gently pressed her hand down. He smiled. "It’s just a baseless, trashy rumor from the internet. You already talked to Feifan on the phone, right?"

"There’s no need to get worked up over something like this!"

Yan Ziruo planted both hands on the desk, leaned forward, and stared directly at Wang Chuan.

"I looked into it. The information online originated from several reports in the United States. Those American reports have photos and even some on-scene video footage. It doesn’t look like fake news."

"I did the math. This gunfight in Los Angeles, the one with over a dozen casualties, would have happened right when Feifan was on his way to the airport, based on the time difference. That’s the exact window when I couldn’t reach his or Duan Yu’s phones."

Yan Ziruo leaned in even further, her presence becoming more imposing.

"Feifan said he was performing an emergency surgery in Los Angeles at the time, and that’s why he couldn’t answer my call."

"Mrs. Zhong, back in Los Angeles, said the same thing."

"Wang Chuan, are you all hiding something from me?"

Wang Chuan felt extremely uncomfortable under her gaze. Inwardly, he was cursing Yan Feifan.

’That damn kid. He said he didn’t want his sister to worry, that he’d tell her the truth face-to-face when he got back.’

’And now look at this mess. One lie needs ten more to cover it up.’

’The online reports of his death might be rumors, but they still leaked the part about the gunfight.’

"Well... um... Ziruo..."

Wang Chuan stalled for time, his mind racing to figure out how to smooth this over.

His hesitation, however, only made Yan Ziruo more frantic.

With a loud BANG, she slammed her hand on the desk.

Whether from the pain of hitting the desk or from pure fear and worry, the rims of Yan Ziruo’s eyes turned red, and tears welled up, threatening to spill over.

"Ziruo, don’t cry! Please, don’t cry..."

Wang Chuan shot to his feet, saying in a panic, "I’ll tell you. I’ll tell you everything..."

He paused, then stressed, "First thing’s first, Ziruo, you need to understand this: Feifan is perfectly safe right now. He’s alive and kicking on a plane to Binhai and will land this evening."

"That... that report about the gunfight... it’s true. Feifan was just unlucky enough to get caught up in it."

"But, Feifan must have a guardian angel..."

But as he said this, Wang Chuan saw the tears in Yan Ziruo’s eyes burst forth like an open floodgate, streaming down her face.

He quickly grabbed a handful of tissues to wipe her tears.

"Ziruo, don’t cry, please don’t cry. Feifan is fine now, he’s really, really fine..."

Yan Ziruo snatched the tissues from his hand. Wiping her own tears, she sobbed, "I woke up in the middle of the night, panicking."

"I couldn’t get through to Feifan’s phone, or Duan Yu’s phone. Do you have any idea how scared and worried I was?"

"I’ve been through this once before..."

Yan Ziruo recalled, her voice thick with lingering fear, "That time, I got a call telling me Feifan had been in a car crash in Chuanzhong. They said he was seriously injured and that I should prepare myself..."

"I... I... WAHHH..."

Perhaps because she had been holding it in for so long, Yan Ziruo suddenly broke down, wailing uncontrollably.

Seeing this, Wang Chuan hesitated for a moment before walking around his desk and wrapping his arms around her.

Yan Ziruo’s body went rigid in his embrace, and she mumbled, "After I woke up, I just couldn’t get through to them. I was so scared. I was so, so scared..."

"Waaaah... Waaaah..."

Yan Ziruo buried her face in Wang Chuan’s chest and began to cry again, her sobs growing louder and louder.

Faced with Yan Ziruo’s unrestrained crying, Wang Chuan didn’t know what to say to comfort her. He simply tightened his embrace...

KNOCK KNOCK... a sudden knock sounded at the door.

Wang Chuan ignored it.

KNOCK KNOCK...

KNOCK KNOCK...

The knocking continued at a steady, relentless rhythm, making Wang Chuan furious.

Yan Ziruo heard it too. She quickly pulled away from his embrace, her wails subsiding into choked sobs.

Wang Chuan strode to the door and yanked it open.

Outside stood an unfamiliar middle-aged man in a suit, carrying a briefcase.

Out of the corner of his eye, Wang Chuan also noticed a few figures in white coats and nurse uniforms down the hall, pretending to be busy with a conversation.

"What do you want?" Wang Chuan demanded irritably.

The middle-aged man’s gaze went past Wang Chuan to Yan Ziruo, who had her back to the door. He announced loudly, "I am Zhang Weixin, a lawyer from the Binhai Xincheng Law Firm. I’m here to see Ms. Yan Ziruo."

Hearing this, Yan Ziruo quickly wiped her tears, turned, and walked over. "I’m Yan Ziruo," she said, her voice full of confusion.

"You’re a lawyer? What do you want with me?"

Zhang Weixin looked Yan Ziruo up and down. "Ms. Yan, hello. I have been retained by Mr. Yan Siyang and have come to deliver a legal notice to you."

As he spoke, Zhang Weixin took an envelope from his briefcase and handed it to Yan Ziruo.

"I am very sorry to hear about Dr. Yan Feifan. Please accept my condolences. However, as Mr. Yan Siyang’s legal counsel, I must inform you of one thing..."

He paused before continuing in a grave tone, "Mr. Yan Siyang, as Dr. Yan Feifan’s father, is the primary heir to his estate."

"From this moment on, all of Dr. Yan Feifan’s assets must be frozen. No transactions can be made until..."

At this, Zhang Weixin noticed the woman’s eyes turn dangerous, her expression twisting into a ferocious snarl.

He instinctively took two steps back.

Just then, a leg lashed out, narrowly missing his groin.

Zhang Weixin paled in shock and scrambled back several more steps.

He then looked at Yan Ziruo, who was now being restrained by Wang Chuan, screaming and flailing her arms and legs wildly. "Yan Ziruo, I’m warning you!" he admonished sternly. "Assault is against the law..."

"Get the hell out!"

Wang Chuan’s furious roar cut him off. "Get out of here, now! You say one more damn word, and believe me, I’ll be the one to break a few of your ribs!"

Zhang Weixin backed away a few more steps. "The legal notice has been served," he said as he retreated. "Transferring any part of the estate now would be illegal."

"Get out! Get the hell out!"

A few more furious shouts from Wang Chuan finally drove Zhang Weixin away.

Under his severe glare, the gawking doctors and nurses nearby also scattered in an instant.

Wang Chuan half-carried the enraged, struggling Yan Ziruo back into the office and slammed the door shut!

"Yan Ziruo, calm down!"

"I can’t calm down!"

Yan Ziruo screamed hysterically, "Ah! What kind of piece of shit father is that? He never gave a damn about us, but the second he hears Feifan is in trouble, he’s the first one here to grab his assets!"

"What kind of a father is that! It’s the most ridiculous joke in the world!"

"Argh, I can’t take it! How could a father like that even exist? He’s worse than the most shameless bastard imaginable."

"Utterly shameless! Utterly shameless..."

Wang Chuan let Yan Ziruo scream and shout until she had vented her frustration. Once she had calmed down a little, he said with a cynical tone, "Ziruo, this is what greed does to people."

"Feifan’s net worth right now... if it’s not a hundred million, it’s definitely in the high tens of millions."

"With that much wealth on the line, it’s not surprising that some people are willing to abandon all morality, decency, and even family ties."

As he said this, an idea suddenly struck him.

"You know, Ziruo... your breakdown just now, the whole scene you made, combined with the news online... it’s enough to convince a lot of people that Feifan really did meet with a fatal accident."

"Ziruo, let’s tell the few people who know the truth to keep quiet and not debunk the rumors. We can just wait and see how many ghouls and goblins come crawling out of the woodwork..."
