Chapter 601: Chapter 600: Can’t Wait
At 6:45 PM on Tuesday, Jingcheng time, the chartered plane carrying Yan Feifan landed at Binhai International Airport.
After a polite farewell to the pilots and flight attendants, Yan Feifan stepped out of the cabin door and was surprised to see a man waiting for him on the jet bridge.
It was the pot-bellied General who had assured him the trip to the United States would be safe.
The General was all smiles, saying with great enthusiasm, "Mr. Yan, welcome back safely to Binhai!"
Yan Feifan’s face was hard as he ignored the man.
He acted as if the General didn’t exist, limping right past him.
Yan Feifan wanted to walk with his head held high, full of vigor, but the wound on his left leg had become more swollen and much more painful.
He had no choice but to limp.
The General gave a wry smile and shook his head, then quickened his pace to catch up with Yan Feifan.
"Mr. Yan, we misjudged the situation this time. We overestimated their basic decency and put you through a life-or-death crisis."
"It was our mistake!"
"Mr. Yan, I’m sorry!"
Yan Feifan stopped and looked at the General, who was bowing in apology. "Have you figured it out yet?" he asked in a cold voice.
"Was the entire incident orchestrated by them?"
The General straightened up and replied, "Mr. Yan, based on the information we have, your encounter with those gunmen was most likely a random incident."
"The police officer who attacked you, Mr. Yan, likely received a last-minute emergency order from the CIA or the US Military."
Yan Feifan let out a short, derisive laugh. "Do you take me for a fool?"
"A mass shooting by gunmen... What are the odds of something like that happening?"
"And I just happened to run right into it."
"With this kind of luck, I should go buy a lottery ticket."
The General chuckled sheepishly. "Well, uh, it was most likely a random incident. As for whether someone was pulling the strings behind the scenes, we’ll need to conduct further investigation and verification."
Yan Feifan snorted coldly and asked, "Let me ask you, I’m just a doctor. Why would they want to eliminate me?"
The General said thoughtfully, "We’ve analyzed the situation."
"For the past few decades, the United States has been number one in the world in every key field, including modern medicine."
"But now, they are facing a powerful challenge from our country on all fronts, which has made the American authorities very anxious."
"And now, you’ve burst onto the scene, Mr. Yan, making even America’s top surgical experts admit their inferiority."
"This has likely provoked the pride of the US Military, especially the sensitive egos of its hardliners."
The General glanced at Yan Feifan’s expression before continuing his analysis slowly. "Mr. Yan, you’re a genius, an exception. If you were to disappear, the United States would naturally reclaim the top spot in this medical field."
The General added cautiously, "They must have investigated and found out that you’ve recently treated several of our country’s military experts."
"And since a perfect opportunity to strike presented itself, someone over there decided they might as well go all the way."
Yan Feifan nodded lightly.
’This explanation does make some sense,’ he thought.
"What about Duan Yu?"
The General quickly explained, "Our people have already arranged for her to recover in a reliable major hospital."
"Once she’s mostly recovered, we’ll arrange for her return."
Yan Feifan grunted in acknowledgment. "Duan Yu performed a great service this time. It’s safe to say you wouldn’t be seeing me here if it weren’t for her."
"That’s her duty..."
Seeing Yan Feifan’s face darken after the General said this, he quickly added, "We all witnessed Duan Yu’s outstanding performance. We will strongly recommend her for a commendation to her direct superior."
Yan Feifan grunted twice, then continued, "As for her work assignment after she recovers, you need to prioritize her wishes."
"I’ve heard..."
"...that there’s a chef in Jingcheng she gets along with quite well."
"Duan Yu is already in her mid-twenties. As her superiors, you should pay more attention to her personal and romantic life."
"We certainly will, we certainly will!" the General agreed meekly.
As they spoke, the two of them exited the long jet bridge and headed toward immigration control.
Led by the General, Yan Feifan went through a special channel and passed through customs without any hindrance.
After customs, the General stopped again and said with great solemnity, "Mr. Yan, in the United States, our resources are limited, and we couldn’t protect you in many respects. You were put in grave danger."
"But now that you’re back in the country, on our home turf, you have no need for any worries or concerns, Mr. Yan."
"Mr. Yan, we will ensure your safety is absolutely foolproof."
Yan Feifan rolled his eyes and said mockingly, "Don’t be so quick to make promises. You might just have to eat your words again."
The General just smiled without offering an explanation. Instead, he said, "Mr. Yan, I won’t accompany you out of the terminal."
"Your family and friends are all waiting for you outside."
"Mr. Yan, if you need to reach me for anything, just dial 1103141. Someone will answer..."
After parting ways with the General, Yan Feifan headed for the arrivals gate.
Having survived another brush with death, he was now eager to get home. Unfortunately, after walking for some time, the wound on his left leg had grown even more painful.
He could only speed up by hopping on his right foot.
He never even considered an airport wheelchair, worried that showing up in one would terrify his sister and Su Ye.
However, the way he moved—limping and occasionally hopping on one foot—was plenty frightening on its own.
Yan Ziruo, who was waiting at the arrivals gate, saw him like this and her heart ached as tears streamed down her face.
Yan Ziruo had already learned some of the details from Wang Chuan, as well as from Zhong Xinyi and Duan Yu.
She knew about the danger her brother had faced, and she knew about the wound on his leg—which he had cleaned and stitched up himself.
Yan Ziruo had originally thought...
...that when she saw Yan Feifan this time, she would use all eighteen kinds of weapons to give him a good thrashing and teach him not to hide things from her ever again.
But the moment she saw her little brother in his current state, her heart broke. She threw her arms around Yan Feifan as he came through the gate and began to sob.
"Sis, what are you crying for?"
"I’m perfectly fine, and there are so many people watching you!"
While comforting his sister in his arms, Yan Feifan exchanged glances with the crowd that had gathered around: Su Ye, Tian Yu, Song Yi, his uncle, Mrs. Xia, Wang Chuan, Liu Jin, Qin Ying, Chen Yu, Lo Jun, and Feng Jian.
But not two seconds later, he and his sister were enveloped in a group hug by Su Ye, Tian Yu, and Song Yi.
"What’s gotten into you all?"
Yan Feifan asked, then looked over at Liu Jin and the others in confusion. "Mr. Liu, Mrs. Qin, Mr. Lo, Director Chen, why are you all here too?"
"You all know what happened in the United States?"
Liu Jin put on an exaggerated expression of a man who’d finally had a great weight lifted from his shoulders. "You rascal, you have no idea, do you?"
"The internet is buzzing with rumors that you were shot and killed in the United States."
"The news sounded so vivid and convincing that many people believed it without a doubt. We all came here together to witness whether you were still alive or not."
Yan Feifan chuckled. "Sorry for making you all worry."
"But now you see, I’m alive, and I’m fine."
He then joked, trying to sound relaxed, "Is anyone disappointed?"
Liu Jin laughed. "We certainly aren’t, but there’s one person who must be sorely disappointed."
"Who?" Yan Feifan couldn’t help but ask.
"Our own Mrs. Meng!"
Wang Chuan took over, his face dripping with sarcasm. "Feifan, at this afternoon’s emergency hospital leadership meeting, at Mrs. Meng’s suggestion, your Extraordinary Fund was taken over and converted into a hospital-managed fund."
"Of that, forty million was transferred to the hospital’s research fund, which is managed by Vice President Chen."
"Another six million was given to a research project led by Academician Hao Junpeng."
Yan Feifan’s brow furrowed. "They couldn’t wait, could they?" he muttered to himself.
Liu Jin sneered. "After being suppressed for so long, they finally got a chance to turn things around. Naturally, they wouldn’t want to wait another second..."
