Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 626 - 625: He Is a Good Person

Chapter 626: Chapter 625: He Is a Good Person

「Friday afternoon. Binhai. Qiu Ge’s office in the Neurosurgery Department of the Affiliated Hospital.」

A video played on the computer monitor on her desk. It had been filmed in a hospital room.

In the video, a mother and daughter who looked enough like each other to be sisters were sobbing uncontrollably.

The mother, who had straight, shoulder-length hair, choked back sobs as she spoke to the camera. "A miracle. It’s truly a living miracle..."

"My husband has finally woken up! He was in a coma for one hundred and five days, and the hospital had declared him to be in a vegetative state."

After a pause, her face filled with gratitude as she said, "Dr. Yan Feifan is an unparalleled medical genius. He truly lives up to his reputation."

"It was the experimental audio stimulation therapy he spearheaded that successfully woke my husband."

The daughter, who wore her hair in a ponytail, suddenly shouted at the camera, "Mr. Yan, thank you for saving my dad! Our family will be forever indebted to you."

Then, the camera panned to the hospital bed.

Lying on the bed, which was inclined at a thirty-degree angle, was a thin, long-faced man in his forties.

He faced the camera, struggled to raise his right hand, and gave a small wave. "Mr. Yan, thank you..." he whispered, his voice a little hoarse.

Qiu Ge clicked the mouse, pausing the video.

Her expression was terrifyingly dark. She looked up and glared at the young doctor standing before her desk. "Xv Fang," she demanded, "explain this to me. What is all this?"

Xv Fang opened his mouth, his voice low. "Two weeks ago, I saw the mother from the video sobbing in the hospital garden."

"So I went over and asked what was wrong."

"She told me that her husband had suffered a brainstem injury in an accident, had fallen into a coma, and was now in a vegetative state."

"She came to the hospital every day to talk to him, turn him over, and give him sponge baths, but he showed no signs of getting better."

"She was on the verge of giving up."

He paused, glancing at Qiu Ge’s darkening expression before continuing, "So I encouraged her not to lose hope, not to give up. I even told her about Mr. Yan as an example, how he woke up after being in a coma for a year and three months."

"I also told her..."

Xv Fang’s voice dropped even lower, almost to a mumble. "...that Mr. Yan was leading a research project on audio stimulation."

"The project is exploring how to use audio stimulation to awaken patients in a vegetative state due to brainstem comas."

Xv Fang lowered his head.

"From that day on, she and her daughter came looking for me every single day, begging me to let her husband undergo the experimental treatment."

"She said that the longer he was in a coma, the lower his chances of waking up. She also said that her husband’s mother isn’t well, and the whole family has been hiding the news of his accident from her."

"The longer this drags on, the harder it will be to keep the secret..."

Xv Fang slowly raised his head to meet Qiu Ge’s gaze and said, "I felt for her, so I agreed."

"After work each day, I would secretly bring her husband to the lab and apply targeted audio stimulation to his brainstem."

"I just thought I’d give it a shot."

"I never thought..."

Qiu Ge cut him off, her face grim. "Xv Fang, are you aware that our research project hasn’t even touched on this area yet?"

"Furthermore, we haven’t received approval from the ethics committee for human trials, let alone permission to conduct them!"

Xv Fang nodded. "I know. I told them all of that, but they just kept begging."

"I couldn’t stick to my principles..."

At this, Xv Fang’s tone brightened a little.

"Luckily, the results were good."

"Dr. Qiu, I followed the procedures you and Mr. Yan discussed and operated with extreme caution. After more than a week of continuous stimulation, her husband actually woke up."

"Dr. Qiu, I think—"

Qiu Ge slammed her hand on the desk. "You think one lucky success absolves you of all responsibility?" she roared.

"Xv Fang, don’t you know that conducting an unauthorized human trial is one of the biggest taboos in medicine?"

"Do you have any idea how much trouble you’ve caused for Mr. Yan and for me?"

Qiu Ge’s voice grew louder, building to a shout.

"Xv Fang, if something had gone wrong with your secret treatment—if that man had died—have you even thought about the consequences?"

Xv Fang bit his lip, his expression tense. "Dr. Qiu, I was extremely careful during the audio stimulation."

"The chance of an accident was very small."

"They even gave me a liability waiver..."

Qiu Ge wanted to pry open Xv Fang’s skull and see if his brain was wired differently from everyone else’s.

"Xv Fang, you’re not a child anymore. How can you still be so naive?"

"You were the one who broke the rules in the first place. It wouldn’t matter if she signed a hundred liability waivers; they’d all be useless."

"Xv Fang, you’re going to ruin us all!"

Xv Fang was silent for a moment before saying, "Dr. Qiu, the reason I hid this from you and Mr. Yan is that I figured if anything went wrong, I would take full responsibility myself."

"You’ll take full responsibility yourself?"

"Have you forgotten your place?"

That sent Qiu Ge over the edge. She exploded, "Xv Fang, you’re a goddamn resident! Do you really think you can shoulder all the responsibility like Mr. Yan can?"

"Mr. Yan may also be a resident, but in all of Binhai—in all of China—there’s only one of him."

"He’s a recognized genius. He can handle it even if the sky itself comes crashing down."

"You’re a goddamn nobody! Mr. Yan and I are the ones who will have to clean up the mess you’ve made, to wipe your ass for you!"

Xv Fang’s lips were pressed into a tight line as he listened to the tirade, his breathing ragged.

He stood ramrod straight, insisting, "Dr. Qiu, regardless of all that, the ’what if’ you’re talking about didn’t happen."

"Her husband woke up!"

Seeing his unrepentant expression, Qiu Ge became absolutely livid. "Are you trying to say you deserve credit for this?"

Xv Fang met her furious gaze and said slowly, "A life is priceless. No matter what, her husband was awakened."

"I am willing to bear all the responsibility."

Qiu Ge was so furious she genuinely wanted to hit him.

She snatched her phone from the desk, and just as she was about to hurl it at him, it rang.

Qiu Ge glanced down. It was a call from Yan Feifan.

"Get out!"

Qiu Ge yelled at Xv Fang, then took two deep breaths to compose herself before answering the call...

’So Xv Fang did this all on his own...’

From Jingcheng Bai Ning Hospital, Yan Feifan listened to Qiu Ge’s detailed account, then mulled it over for a moment. "Dr. Qiu," he said, "I need you to go find Mr. Liu, Mr. Chen, and Mr. Hou to report this and conduct a self-assessment. Then, go to the ethics committee and give them an explanation."

The ethics committee was a medical board composed of personnel with backgrounds in medicine, pharmacology, and other relevant fields.

It was an independent body affiliated with the Health Commission, its composition and activities free from the interference or influence of those who organized and implemented clinical trials.

Its duty was to protect the rights and safety of test subjects. It did this by independently reviewing, approving, and monitoring trial protocols and related documents, as well as the methods and materials used to obtain and record the subjects’ informed consent.

Any medical research, especially clinical trials, was subject to the committee’s strict approval and supervision.

Yan Feifan finished giving his instructions, then added, "Dr. Qiu, as for Xv Fang... I’ll handle him."

After hanging up with Qiu Ge, Yan Feifan found Miao Quan’s number and called him.

On the call, Yan Feifan relayed what Qiu Ge had told him.

"Mr. Miao, I need you to have a talk with Xv Fang."

"If it’s true that he did this on his own simply because he couldn’t bear to listen to their pleas, then..."

Yan Feifan said slowly, "Mr. Miao, Xv Fang is a good person... but he isn’t cut out to be a doctor."
