Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 627 - 626: Mom’s Here

Chapter 627: Chapter 626: Mom’s Here

Doctors are required to be caring and benevolent, but more importantly, they must have principles and conviction. At critical moments, they also need a heart of stone.

This is because doctors sometimes have to make harsh, even cruel, decisions.

For example, telling a patient they must amputate a limb to save their life, or having to choose which of two critically ill patients to save.

In Yan Feifan’s eyes, although Xv Fang was kind-hearted, he was an indiscriminate do-gooder who lacked principles.

He had been kicked out of Union Medical College Hospital over a euthanasia incident, yet he still hadn’t learned his lesson.

Now, just because of the pleas of that mother and daughter, Xv Fang had dared to violate hospital regulations and conduct an experimental treatment in secret.

The nerve he had was truly astonishing.

It made Yan Feifan truly understand the meaning of the saying, "a leopard can’t change its spots."

A guy like that was a ticking time bomb, bound to cause even bigger trouble sooner or later.

Most importantly, he didn’t just harm himself; he harmed others too.

If the ethics committee were to investigate this incident strictly, Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge, as the project leaders, would be in over their heads.

Xv Fang had gotten lucky. Somehow, through his meddling, the patient in a vegetative state had miraculously woken up, so there were no major consequences.

If he had failed and the patient had died as a result, and if the family had then raised hell, Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge, as the project leaders, might even have faced criminal charges.

The thought sent a shiver of fear down Yan Feifan’s spine.

Therefore, on the phone, Yan Feifan directly stated his position to Mr. Miao.

If the allegations were true, then Xv Fang should be stripped of his medical license.

It would be a course correction, in a way.

During the previous euthanasia incident, Xv Fang’s actions alone had been enough to warrant the revocation of his medical license.

What Yan Feifan, in making this decision, didn’t realize was that as his status and role changed, his own way of thinking had imperceptibly changed along with them.

In the past, he himself had sometimes bent the rules when the situation called for it.

Yan Feifan would never have considered his own actions reckless or a flagrant disregard for regulations. He would have simply believed his skills were top-notch, he was confident he could pull it off, and he could handle any potential consequences.

But now, from his perspective as the head of a research and development project, Yan Feifan certainly didn’t want anyone on his team acting rashly and breaking the rules.

Moreover, Yan Feifan rationalized that the times he had bent the rules were always in response to emergencies.

Xv Fang’s situation, however, was clearly not the same.

He could have handled the matter properly in any number of ways, but he just had to choose the worst possible approach.

Perhaps, Yan Feifan suspected...

’Was this guy, Xv Fang, trying to be clever and use this incident to prove his abilities to me?’

If that was what Xv Fang was thinking, it had completely backfired.

Yan Feifan had only reluctantly taken him on in the first place as a favor to Mr. Miao.

Yan Feifan would not keep such an unreliable person by his side...

After ending the call with Mr. Miao, Yan Feifan, now back at the guesthouse, called Wang Chuan, Chen Yu, and Yu Suye one after another, asking them to look into the matter further and keep an eye on developments.

After finishing his round of calls, Yan Feifan noticed it was already nearly four in the afternoon.

Thinking about the symposium that evening and the two surgeries scheduled for the next day, an annoyed Yan Feifan flopped onto his bed, hoping to regulate his mood with some rest...

A few minutes later, his phone rang, playing the tune of "Jasmine."

Yan Feifan picked up his phone and saw it was a call from Zhao Xiaoting.

"What do you want?"

Perhaps because Yan Feifan’s tone was a bit harsh, Zhao Xiaoting asked cautiously over the phone, "Feifan, are you in a bad mood?"

"Or did I call at a bad time?"

Yan Feifan softened his tone a little. "Something unpleasant happened at the hospital. It’s not a big deal."

After a pause, he asked, "Aren’t you busy filming your TV series? How do you have time to call?"

As Yan Feifan’s tone improved, Zhao Xiaoting’s voice on the other end of the line became cheerful.

"Feifan, we actors are people too. We need to rest, you know."

"I happen to know you’re at Baining Hospital. Would it be convenient for me to come and visit?"

Yan Feifan refused. "Better not."

"At Baining Hospital, I’m either performing surgery or discussing issues with medical colleagues. I don’t have time to entertain you."

Zhao Xiaoting pressed on, "Feifan, no matter how busy you are, you still have to eat, right? You must have time for a meal together, right?"

Yan Feifan asked directly, "Zhao Xiaoting, is there something you need? If there is, just tell me on the phone. You don’t have to make a special trip."

"Hey! As a friend, do I have to have a reason to see you?"

Zhao Xiaoting said huffily into the phone, "There’s been so much news about you lately—the fake report about you being shot and killed in the United States, and then the news about you receiving an award. It’s put me on an emotional roller coaster."

"As a good friend, I just want to see you, just to show you that I care."

After a moment’s pause, she asked plaintively, "Yan Feifan, in your heart, do you not even consider me a friend?"

"That’s not it, that’s not it. Of course you’re a friend."

Yan Feifan gave a perfunctory reply before changing the subject. "I have a symposium tonight, and I need to focus on preparing for two surgeries tomorrow. I really don’t have time to see you today."

"How about this? You can come over tomorrow afternoon."

Yan Feifan added, "If the surgeries go well tomorrow, I should have time to have dinner with you."

"If they don’t, I might not even have a moment to spare for a conversation."

"Okay, I’ll come find you at Baining Hospital tomorrow afternoon!"

Zhao Xiaoting agreed cheerfully, then asked enthusiastically, "Feifan, is there any special Jingcheng food you’d like me to bring you tomorrow?"

Yan Feifan thought about it seriously. "If you can, bring some of those so-called imperial court pastries, like yellow pea cakes."

"I want to see if they’re really as delicious as they look in TV shows and food programs."

"OK, no problem..."

After ending the call with Zhao Xiaoting, Yan Feifan found that his mood had surprisingly improved a great deal.

He began to settle down and review the surgical plans for the next day’s two operations, working until five-thirty in the evening.

Afterward, Yan Feifan and Feng Jian left their room at the guesthouse to get dinner.

The dining location for the evening was set up on a sizable lawn to the west of the temporary operating rooms and exhibition hall.

Several canopies had been set up on the lawn, with a dozen or so tables and chairs arranged underneath for dining.

There was also a long buffet table on the lawn, laden with ten to twenty different dishes for guests to serve themselves.

To Yan Feifan’s surprise, there was also a charcoal grill on the lawn, where two chefs were barbecuing.

It gave the evening’s buffet dinner the feel of an outdoor barbecue picnic.

Yan Feifan walked up to the long table, picked up a plate, and casually helped himself to five dishes that looked appetizing. He then found an empty table and sat down.

He had only taken a couple of bites when he noticed someone sit down in the empty seat beside him.

Yan Feifan paid it no mind and continued eating, until a woman’s voice sounded in his ear.

"Mr. Yan, hello. I’m Wang Fang, a Deputy Chief Technologist in the clinical laboratory at Union Medical College Hospital..."

Yan Feifan turned toward the voice.

He saw a pleasant-looking middle-aged woman of about fifty, dressed in a smart blue suit, with her black hair tied up in a bun.

"Mr. Yan, I’m Xv Fang’s mother."

"I’d like to talk to you about the mistake my son has made..."
