Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 695 - 694: Thrown in at the Deep End

Chapter 695: Chapter 694: Thrown in at the Deep End

Shortly after nine in the morning, a piece of news began to circulate throughout the Cardiac Surgery Department.

"At 10:00 AM, Dr. Yan Feifan will be the lead surgeon for a live pig heart transplant in the cardiac surgery teaching operating room."

As this news spread rapidly, the young and middle-aged doctors who didn’t have any urgent or important work quickly flooded into the teaching operating room on the west side of the Cardiac Surgery Department’s first floor, scrambling for seats with a good view.

Of course, they all consciously left the few prime seats empty—the ones that overlooked the operating table.

They knew that for a live pig heart transplant with Yan Feifan as the lead surgeon, plenty of the department’s senior figures would surely come to watch.

The doctor with glasses and the chubby doctor, who had been busy in the first-floor lobby, were lucky enough to get permission from their attending physician and rushed over at the first opportunity to grab two seats with a reasonably good view.

The doctor with glasses noticed colleagues hurrying into the viewing gallery and taking their seats one by one. Down in the operating room, four nurses were bustling about, preparing the necessary supplies for the surgery.

After all, the subject of this surgery was a pig, not a person.

Some of the medications and blood products needed during the procedure were very different from those used in human surgery and had to be swapped out.

Fortunately, the Cardiac Surgery Department was not short on the necessary veterinary supplies for operating on a pig, so the nurses preparing the room didn’t have to scramble frantically for help.

As a teaching and research hospital, the Cardiac Surgery Department had a huge demand for human organs like hearts for routine teaching, research, and development.

However, donated human hearts were extremely scarce.

However, pig hearts are highly similar to human hearts. Pig heart valves can even be transplanted into human hearts to treat diseases like valvular defects.

Some medical institutions around the world were even developing and raising pigs with embedded human genes, hoping to turn them into organ donors for human heart transplants.

As things stood, pig hearts were an excellent substitute for cardiac surgeons to practice on.

The Affiliated Hospital’s Cardiac Surgery Department even had its own experimental pig breeding facility, which provided a continuous supply of live pigs for surgeons to practice various procedures and develop new surgical techniques.

However, as far as the doctor with glasses knew, this was the first time a live pig heart transplant was being performed as a public demonstration in the teaching operating room.

"What the hell is Yan Feifan up to? Isn’t he here to learn?"

The doctor with glasses said with a bewildered expression, "The moment he arrives, he’s performing a heart transplant, and a public one at that. No matter how you look at it, this seems like a challenge or a show of force, doesn’t it?"

The chubby doctor said with a tone of admiration, "Challenge or show of force, it doesn’t matter. The fact that he dares to perform this surgery proves how incredible he is."

"We all know plenty of associate chief physicians in our department can’t even perform a major surgery like this."

The doctor with glasses snorted, his feelings mixed. "Let’s hope he isn’t overconfident and has a skewed sense of his own abilities."

"If he screws this up, it’s going to be quite the spectacle!"

The chubby doctor said defensively, "He won’t screw it up."

"Since he started practicing medicine, Mr. Yan has never failed a single surgery he’s led. Every single one has been a success, without exception."

"Let alone a public demonstration this important."

"Since Mr. Yan dares to do this, he must be absolutely confident..."

What this chubby young doctor, who practically worshiped Yan Feifan, didn’t know was that Yan Feifan had actually been forced into a corner before agreeing to this public surgery.

Originally, Yan Feifan was just supposed to go to the lab to demonstrate some of his cardiac surgery skills for Mr. Liang, Mr. Gu, and the others.

However, on the way to the lab, Liang Zhao Kui learned that the source of Yan Feifan’s confidence in performing a heart transplant was simply a few surgeries he had previously observed, along with some related surgical papers.

This left Liang Zhao Kui and the others feeling rather displeased.

’Damn it, you need at least ten years of clinical experience in cardiac surgery, plus the relevant assessments and certifications, to even qualify as the lead surgeon for a major operation like a heart transplant.’

’You learned how to do it just by watching?’

’Even if you’ve already proven you’re a medical genius, this is just too disrespectful to our Cardiac Surgery Department.’

Liang Zhao Kui and Gu Lin exchanged a look, and as if by telepathy, the senior doctors came to a mutual understanding.

One suggested that if he was going to do a demonstration, he should show his highest level of skill, so why not just do a heart transplant?

Another pointed out that there wasn’t enough time to request a cadaver for the demonstration, so why not use a live pig?

Someone else proposed that since everyone in the department was so full of anticipation for Mr. Yan’s arrival, they might as well go big and make it a public demonstration.

Caught in the back-and-forth between Liang Zhao Kui and the other senior doctors, Yan Feifan dazedly agreed.

And just like that, the news spread:

In the Cardiac Surgery Department’s teaching operating room, Yan Feifan would be demonstrating the entire process of a heart transplant on a live pig.

At 9:30 AM, the teaching operating room was prepped and ready for the pig heart transplant.

At 9:40 AM, two cleaned and anesthetized, ill-fated white pigs, each weighing around 180 pounds, were wheeled into the operating room.

One of the ill-fated pigs was lifted directly onto the operating table, hooves to the sky, and secured in place.

The other, even more ill-fated pig, would have its chest cut open right there in the operating room to have its heart removed, serving as the donor organ for the first pig.

At 9:45 AM, Yan Feifan, having scrubbed in and donned his surgical gown, entered the operating room along with four students who would serve as his assistants, and they began their final preparations.

At 9:50 AM, Liang Zhao Kui, Gu Lin, Deng Chunming, Ni Leixing, Zhang Shi’an, and a host of other medical heavyweights arrived in the viewing gallery with a flourish, taking the best seats.

Gu Lin glanced around and saw that the forty-five-seat viewing gallery was packed, with a dozen or so people left standing.

He leaned closer to Liang Zhao Kui and whispered, "Mr. Liang, don’t you think we went a little too far, putting the kid on the spot like this?"

Liang Zhao Kui replied in a low voice, "Do you really believe he can lead this surgery based on just observing a few operations and reading some papers?"

Gu Lin said thoughtfully, "Logically, I don’t believe it. But from the way he’s acting, he doesn’t seem to be all talk."

"The kid isn’t the type to make empty boasts."

"It’s just..."

Gu Lin said doubtfully, "Given his history, it’s impossible for him to have secretly received similar training at another medical institution."

"And it’s not like he turns into Jack the Ripper at night."

"It’s just, he..."

Gu Lin gestured toward Yan Feifan, who was busy in the operating room. "Mr. Liang, look at him. He’s so calm and composed. You can’t see the slightest hint of nervousness."

"He must have a solid foundation for his confidence."

Liang Zhao Kui sighed softly. "Perhaps this is the world of a genius, something we ordinary people can’t comprehend."

After a pause, he continued slowly, "Whether he truly has the skills to back it up or is just overconfident and overestimating himself..."

"We’ve maximized the difficulty and the external pressure to truly test his mettle."

Gu Lin chuckled. "Aren’t you worried he’ll fail and embarrass himself?"

Liang Zhao Kui chuckled. "What’s there to worry about? Look how young the kid is. No matter how badly he fails, he can always start over."

"For someone who’s received nothing but praise, having things go too smoothly isn’t necessarily a good thing."

Gu Lin nodded. "That’s true. His success makes it easy to forget how young he is."

"He has more than enough leeway to fail."

He glanced at the doctors sitting around them and said softly, "In recent years, we haven’t had any dazzling young or middle-aged doctors emerge in our department. It’s a concern for the future..."

Liang Zhao Kui said hopefully, "I hope this kid can bring us some new excitement, some new discoveries..."
