Chapter 694: Chapter 693: Actions Speak Louder Than Words
「September 14th, Monday!」
Yan Feifan woke up at six in the morning as usual and arrived at the Affiliated Hospital around seven-thirty.
He first went to the Little Red House to do his rounds, checking on the postoperative recovery of the young American girl, the patient with the intraspinal tumor, and the young woman who had undergone a full facial reconstruction.
Afterward, Yan Feifan went to the Plastic Surgery Center to check on Nawa from Thailand, as well as several children with disabilities and deformities from the welfare institute.
Yan Feifan also didn’t forget to visit the Neurosurgery Department to see if the test monkeys and lab mice were showing any physiological or behavioral abnormalities.
After making a large loop around the hospital, Yan Feifan and his four students—Yu Beihua, Pan Jichuan, Zhu Jian, and Li Tianlin—arrived at the Cardiac Surgery Department in a whirlwind at eight-thirty in the morning.
As for Berry, Yan Feifan had temporarily assigned her to the Plastic Surgery Center to learn about the state of plastic surgery institutions in the country under Wang Chuan.
The Cardiac Surgery Department was one of the largest departments in the Affiliated Hospital.
In terms of staff size, it was second only to the General Surgery Department, with nearly two hundred medical personnel, making it one of the Affiliated Hospital’s flagship departments.
The department ranked in the top ten nationally, having hovered around seventh or eighth place for many years.
As Yan Feifan walked into the first-floor lobby of the Cardiac Surgery building, he was surprised to see Director Liang Zhao Kui leading several people toward him with a smile.
He quickly hurried over and bowed slightly in greeting.
"Mr. Liang, Mr. Gu, Mr. Deng, Dr. Ni, Dr. Zhang, good morning!"
"Mr. Liu, hello!"
Director Liang Zhao Kui; two deputy directors, Gu Lin and Deng Chunming; and two senior attending physicians, Ni Leixing and Zhang Shi’an, were the five widely acknowledged titans of the Cardiac Surgery Department.
As for Dr. Liu Nai’an, whom Yan Feifan addressed as Mr. Liu, he was an associate chief physician and had been Yan Feifan’s supervising instructor during his cardiac surgery rotation three years ago.
Unless there were special connections, residents and interns on departmental rotations were supervised by attending physicians or associate chiefs.
For Yan Feifan, who had no medical background to speak of and was rather socially awkward, being mentored by an associate chief physician during his cardiac surgery rotation back then was considered quite fortunate.
After greeting everyone, Yan Feifan asked curiously, "Mr. Liang, are you all here for an important event or work arrangement?"
Liang Zhao Kui chuckled and countered, "What do you think?"
Seeing them all smiling at him, Yan Feifan said, a bit slow on the uptake, "Don’t tell me you came here specifically to welcome me?"
When their continued smiles served as a silent confirmation, Yan Feifan felt a rush of surprise and apprehension.
"I came here as a student to learn and seek guidance from my elders and seniors. How can I be worthy of such a great honor?"
"As the old saying goes, you’re flattering me."
Liang Zhao Kui laughed heartily. "Feifan, you’re not the same person you were before. You can handle it, you can definitely handle it."
Gu Lin said with a smile, "Mr. Yan, we are absolutely delighted and full of anticipation to have you here in our Cardiac Surgery Department."
He continued with an emotional expression, "Mr. Yan, you brought a number-one reputation to the Plastic Surgery Center and made the Neurosurgery Department famous at home and abroad for its intraspinal tumor surgery. It’s foreseeable that the phalloplasty procedure will make the Trauma Surgery Department famous overnight for that one surgery alone."
"Not to mention the immense glory your successful research on audio-hypnosis and infrasound awakening will bring to the Neurosurgery Department."
Gu Lin said hopefully, "Mr. Yan, we are incredibly hopeful that after coming to our Cardiac Surgery Department, you can also bring us new discoveries and new advancements."
This made Yan Feifan scratch his head.
"Mr. Gu, isn’t it a bit much to just drop a huge mountain on me like this? I might get crushed and never be able to get back up."
Gu Lin chuckled. "To others, it might feel like being crushed by Mount Tai, but for you, Mr. Yan, it’s as light as a feather."
"Mr. Yan, you came to our Cardiac Surgery Department to create miracles. How could our small expectations possibly crush you?"
At this point, Liang Zhao Kui spoke up. "Let’s go back to the office to discuss this in more detail. With so many of us standing in the lobby, we’re disrupting other people’s work."
At his words, the group moved toward the stairs and headed for the third-floor office area...
As they left, many of the doctors and nurses working in the lobby, who had been secretly watching them, began to voice their opinions.
A young doctor with glasses said contemptuously, "He says he’s here to learn, but he brings his own students with him. He’s really putting on airs."
The moment he finished speaking, a chubby young doctor next to him retorted, "The fact that all five of our department’s titans came out to greet him proves that Mr. Yan has the right to put on airs."
He sighed again. "I’m so envious of Mr. Yan’s students. They have the advantage of proximity, basically receiving direct guidance from a titan."
The doctor with glasses said sourly, "All you can do is be envious. Mr. Yan’s students all have powerful backgrounds."
"Mr. Yan has long forgotten his own origins. He wouldn’t deign to look down at humble people like us."
"What are you spouting nonsense for?"
An attending physician in his thirties came over and said sternly, "Don’t make this about family background."
"Those students Mr. Yan took on were immersed in medicine from a young age. Their grades in medical school were better than yours, and their performance during their internships and training at the hospital was more outstanding than yours."
"Tell me, when Mr. Yan was choosing students, why wouldn’t he pick them, the more outstanding candidates, instead of you, who are lacking in every respect?"
The doctor with glasses said, unconvinced, "That’s because I didn’t have the same good learning and training opportunities. Under the same conditions, I wouldn’t be any worse than them."
The attending physician scoffed. "Don’t say things that are impossible to prove. You’ll just make a fool of yourself."
"Mr. Yan started with zero medical foundation. Look at him now."
The attending physician gestured to stop the doctor with glasses, who was about to speak. "And don’t say it’s because he’s a gifted learner."
"As far as I know, when Mr. Yan was in medical school, he was basically the first one to leave the dormitory and went to bed very late."
"During his years in university, he had almost no social life or recreational activities. He was either holed up in the library or in the lab."
"You all attended medical school around the same time as him. Am I exaggerating?"
The doctor with glasses fell silent.
The chubby doctor said admiringly, "Dr. Xv, you’re not exaggerating. The dorm manager even kept a special record."
"It said that for six academic years, whenever Mr. Yan was at school, he would leave the dormitory a little after five every single day, rain or shine, with no days off for holidays."
The attending physician looked at the doctor with glasses and said, "Stop complaining about external conditions. First, try to be as diligent as Mr. Yan, and then we can talk."
Seeing the ashamed expression on the other doctor’s face, the attending physician left, quite satisfied.
He walked over to a few nurses who were huddled together and heard them chattering, "They’re so handsome!"
"Yeah, every single one of them is handsome! Compared to them, the young doctors in our department are a bunch of ugly misfits. And they’re all so arrogant, barely giving us the time of day..."
The attending physician couldn’t listen anymore and let out a loud cough...
In the director’s office on the third floor of the Cardiac Surgery Department, Yan Feifan, the five titans of the department, and Dr. Liu Nai’an were all seated on the sofas in the reception area.
As for Yan Feifan’s four students, they could only stand.
"Mr. Liang, for now, I can only set aside all day Monday and Friday to study here."
Liang Zhao Kui nodded with a smile. "Feifan, your schedule is tight. Being able to spare two days a week is already quite good."
He then added thoughtfully, "You have a solid foundation and an extremely strong ability to learn, so your study plan will naturally be different from others’."
"Feifan, we first need to understand what your level of mastery is in the field of cardiac surgery."
"Well..."
Yan Feifan hesitated for a moment before saying, "Mr. Liang, for routine procedures like atrioventricular septal defect repairs and near-standard heart transplants, I should be competent!"
As soon as he said this, Liang Zhao Kui and the others looked at each other in stunned silence.
’Great. The moment he opens his mouth, he puts himself at the level of a senior attending physician. How are we supposed to teach him now?’
Yan Feifan quickly added, "I was only talking about routine, by-the-book cardiac surgeries. But when it comes to more irregular cases, I probably wouldn’t know how to handle them."
Liang Zhao Kui chuckled. "The standard procedures in textbooks always describe ideal situations. In actual practice, every person’s heart is vastly different."
"How about this? Actions speak louder than words..."
"Let’s go to the lab and have Feifan give us a concrete demonstration..."
