Chapter 764 -763: A Discovery
The second patient in a deep coma had woken up, and the collaboration with Baining Medical Technology was looking promising. This left Yan Feifan feeling incredibly excited, brimming with boundless energy.
On Tuesday at noon, Yan Feifan and Dr. Qiu Ge performed the sixth infrasound resonance stimulation treatment on the other two patients in deep comas.
Afterward, the two performed an ultrasound oscillation stimulation on the brainstems of Patients Two and Five, who had returned from Jingcheng the previous night, hoping to affect the calcified spots in their brains.
Yan Feifan and Qiu Ge planned to test for the optimal infrasound stimulation frequency after performing three more rounds of ultrasound oscillation stimulation on these two patients.
Wednesday morning brought two more of the neurosurgery department’s routine intraspinal tumor puncture and injection surgeries.
As for the rumor about paying five hundred thousand to buy a spot in line, a patient’s family member had come forward to issue a clarification and an apology.
In the apology letter, they explained that upon suddenly hearing Mr. Yan was canceling all his surgeries for health reasons, they had panicked and believed it. In their fear and desperation, they had spoken recklessly and spouted nonsense.
The five-hundred-thousand-yuan story was pure fabrication.
Yan Feifan believed the family’s explanation, as did the hospital.
As for whether anyone else believed it, that was beyond Yan Feifan’s control.
There were nearly three months left until the end of the year—eleven weeks in total—and twenty-two patients were on the neurosurgery department’s waiting list.
Over at Baining Hospital, another twelve patients were waiting.
Thirty-four patients in total. ‘If I just hold on a little longer, I’ll get through them all,’ Yan Feifan thought.
He didn’t want any more ridiculous nonsense to crop up at this final stage.
After all, his relationships with everyone involved were still quite good.
After the new year, aside from patients from the PLA General Hospital and Dr. Kevin Vega, the decision of whether to accept any more patients with intraspinal or brain tumors would be his and his alone.
Moreover, by that time, his research lab would be fully responsible for these patients, independent of any other departments.
After lunch, Yan Feifan and Dr. Wang Chuan examined the facial and neck injuries of Tang Zheng, as well as his overall physical condition.
Yan Feifan tentatively scheduled Tang Zheng’s facial reconstruction surgery for the upcoming Friday and Saturday.
A little after four in the afternoon, Yan Feifan returned to the Little Red House. He met with Qin Feng and Dr. Kevin Vega to discuss the surgical plans for their respective patients.
After finalizing the surgical plan for the next day, Yan Feifan returned to his research lab on the ninth floor, where he found Professor Shi Min, his sister Yan Ziruo, and the lab’s accountant, Lu Yuanqi, waiting for him.
“What is it?”
Yan Ziruo rolled her eyes. “Of course there is. You do realize the hospital pays salaries on the tenth of each month, right?”
“The National Day holiday just ended. As soon as we came back to work on the eighth, every department had to submit its payroll to the hospital’s finance office.”
“And the research lab’s payroll hasn’t been prepared yet.”
“How much everyone gets paid… we need you, the boss, to make the final call.”
The topic immediately piqued Yan Feifan’s interest.
He sat down to listen to Lu Yuanqi’s report on the medical research lab’s income and expenses from the previous month.
Lu Yuanqi took out a printed summary sheet and handed it to Yan Feifan. “Boss, all of the lab’s income and expenses from last month are on this sheet.”
Yan Feifan’s gaze swept over the sheet, landing directly on the final summary column.
He glanced at it, and his eyes widened in shock.
“Negative 742,783.”
“How are we in the red?”
Yan Feifan said, completely baffled, “There weren’t many surgeries for the lab last month, but the two cosmetic procedures alone brought in over seven million.”
He thought of something else. “If you factor in salary expenses, wouldn’t the loss for September be over a million?”
Lu Yuanqi explained softly, “Mr. Yan, although the revenue from those two surgeries was high, the hospital’s cut was also significant.”
“After taking out your cut, Boss, and deducting expenses for medical supplies, medication, operating room and ward fees, and so on… what’s left for the lab is only three point one million. That’s not even half.”
After a brief pause, Lu Yuanqi added, “Boss, the reason we were in the red for September is because we included the lab’s renovation costs—office furniture, equipment, and instruments—which came to nearly 1.2 million, all in this month’s accounting.”
“Also, per your request, Mr. Yan, we purchased several top-of-the-line sets of surgical instruments and one general-purpose surgical microscope, totaling 2.81 million.”
“Another major expense was the training costs for Dr. Zhu, Dr. Li, and the others. The fees for specimens, lab usage, and so on totaled nearly 520,000, which was also included in this month’s expenses.”
This only made Yan Feifan more confused.
“Weren’t these expenses supposed to be covered by the research grant?”
Yan Ziruo chuckled slyly. “Feifan, you now have your own entity with independent accounting. It’s better to book all these expenses as operating costs.”
“You’re a public figure now. You were already all over the news because of that one high paycheck. If the entity’s profits appear lower, you’re less likely to be targeted by jealous people.”
Adopting the tone of an insider, Yan Ziruo continued, “Feifan, let me tell you something…”
“Our Affiliated Hospital is a public, state-funded institution. We can have high revenue, but we absolutely cannot show high profits.”
“Breaking even, or even running at a slight loss, is the kind of result the hospital leadership, the government, and the public prefer to see.”
“But research funding is a different matter entirely.”
“The higher that number is, the more prestigious it is. It’s a recognition and a symbol of your capabilities.”
“The general public doesn’t really care how the money is spent, especially corporate-sponsored funds, as long as you keep producing good research outcomes.”
“So, the hospital also wants us to keep the entity’s declared profits low and use the research grant as our personal war chest.”
Yan Feifan “oh”-ed in sudden understanding.
With a base of over twenty million in research funding, Yan Feifan was now, one might say, rolling in it.
He set aside the financial report and said thoughtfully, “The plastic surgery center is arguably the department with the highest average income in the entire hospital.”
“I told Meng Yao, Ye Lin, and Xv Shuang that I wouldn’t let their earnings here fall below what they were making at the plastic surgery center.”
“So, let’s calculate the hourly wages and surgical bonuses for our lab’s nurses at 1.5 times the rate of the plastic surgery center.”
“Since their workload in September was light, create a special bonus to make up the difference. Ensure their income is no less than 1.2 times their average salary from their last three months at the plastic surgery center.”
“As for the nurses who transferred from trauma surgery and the emergency department, extrapolate their pay based on their respective titles and seniority, using the standards for Meng Yao, Ye Lin, and Xv Shuang as a benchmark.”
Lu Yuanqi jotted down the main points and asked, “Mr. Yan, what about Dr. Zhu, Berry, and the others?”
Yan Feifan thought for a moment. “They’re here as students. Give them each a ten-thousand-yuan stipend for living expenses.”
He then looked at Lu Yuanqi. “For everyone else in the lab, add an extra five thousand to their agreed-upon salary as a September bonus.”
Lu Yuanqi’s eyes crinkled with a smile. “Thanks for the big bonus, Boss!”
Then she asked, “Boss, what about your own salary?”
Yan Feifan paused, taken aback. “For cosmetic surgeries, I take a thirty-percent cut. For other procedures, I’m paid at the expert level according to the hospital’s standard fee schedule.”
“Just follow the hospital’s standard procedure for the rest.”
Lu Yuanqi reminded him, “Boss, as the head of the lab, you decided on our bonuses.”
“You can give yourself a bonus, too.”
Yan Feifan chuckled. “September’s net income was negative. How could I possibly justify taking a bonus?”
“I’ll lead by example. My bonus is zero!”
Once the salary and bonus principles for all lab employees were settled, Shi Min, Yan Ziruo, and Lu Yuanqi stayed behind to work out the specific figures, while Yan Feifan clocked out for the day.
On the way home, the Cayenne he was riding in suddenly stopped at an intersection.
The front passenger door opened, and Li Yun slid in.
“Find anything?” Yan Feifan asked directly.
Li Yun nodded. “Over the past few days, we’ve analyzed a large volume of case data and found something suspicious.”
“In the past three years, besides you, Mr. Yan, four other patients in a vegetative state have experienced a situation similar to yours.”
“They also suddenly entered a state of brain death before becoming organ donors…”
