Chapter 765 -764: Not to be Taken as a Precedent
Hearing Li Yun’s update left Yan Feifan with a heavy heart.
For such improbable events to occur one after another couldn’t be dismissed as mere coincidence.
Clearly, someone was pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Confirming that someone had indeed been manipulating things for a long time also allowed Yan Feifan to breathe a sigh of relief about something else.
Namely, that the Song siblings couldn’t be the masterminds.
Even if they were involved, their role would have been limited to funding the operation.
He tried to put himself in Song Yan’s shoes. A man of talent and wealth, but getting a heart transplant on such short notice was next to impossible.
What if someone had told him he could get anything he wanted, as long as he paid?
‘Faced with a life-or-death decision, could he guarantee he wouldn’t choose to pay to save his own life?’
“Have you found any suspects?”
Li Yun shook his head. “Right now, we don’t have any direct evidence. We’ve only confirmed through big data analysis that someone is, in fact, doing this in secret.”
“And because this is a covert investigation, we haven’t been able to obtain some of the original hard-copy records.”
“But we suspect that even if we did get them, they wouldn’t be much help. After all, a considerable amount of time has passed, and the mastermind is extremely cautious. They would have erased anything that needed to be erased, leaving no evidence behind that could expose them.”
The response was a great disappointment to Yan Feifan.
“Even with you on the case, you couldn’t find anything? So what’s next? Bring in the police and launch a full-blown, public investigation?”
Li Yun shook his head again. “Our superiors have said this case must remain a covert investigation.”
“If word gets out, it could cause a significant public outcry, possibly even widespread panic.”
“Mr. Yan, this matter has already been reported to the higher-ups.”
“A high-ranking official has even issued an order: investigate this to the very end until the truth is uncovered.”
“Mr. Yan, a special joint task force of elite professionals from various departments has been assembled to handle this case.”
“My superior asked me to tell you that you can rest assured—the person behind all this will definitely be rooted out.”
Yan Feifan nodded, and a thought suddenly occurred to him.
“With a secret investigation, if the perpetrator is unaware, we can’t rule out the possibility that they’ll strike again.”
“You’re not planning to just lie in wait, hoping to catch them red-handed the next time they make a move, are you?”
Li Yun quickly explained, “Of course not! How could we do that?”
“We are actively pursuing all leads and will do everything in our power to prevent any more victims.”
Yan Feifan let out a soft sigh. “I hope you can bring the culprit to justice soon.”
“Oh, there’s something I forgot to tell you.”
After some thought, Yan Feifan decided he had to mention it, just in case it could prevent more victims.
“Back then, the heart I received was originally meant for that guy, Song Yan from Rock Technology. He’s incredibly wealthy.”
“But then he was fortunate enough to receive another one.”
“Also, what about the other people on the transplant list at the time who were also a match…”
Li Yun cut in, “Mr. Yan, including Song Yan, there were a total of twenty-one people on that list of successful matches.”
“As of today, eight of them have passed away.”
“We’ve investigated all twenty-one of those people, as well as the fifty-eight other patients who received organs from the four suspected victims.”
“So far, we haven’t found any of them who had suspicious financial transactions with anyone from the Affiliated Hospital or connected to the medical system during the relevant time frames.”
Yan Feifan was both surprised and utterly relieved by this news.
This meant that any suspicion on the Song siblings was completely eliminated.
Yan Feifan realized that Li Yun and his team had truly done a massive amount of work during this time.
What surprised him was…
‘It wasn’t for money?’
Li Yun explained, “Perhaps the perpetrator has a more covert method of exchanging benefits.”
“We’ll continue to dig deeper along this line of inquiry.”
“Mr. Yan…”
Li Yun paused, his tone turning serious. “The special task force will not be disbanded until this case is solved.”
“Mr. Yan, you can leave this matter to us with confidence. Please, do not conduct any private investigations. We don’t want to risk arousing the perpetrator’s suspicion.”
Yan Feifan hummed in agreement. “Don’t worry about that. I’ll leave the professional work to the professionals.”
“Besides, I’m already swamped every day. I don’t have the time or energy…”
When the Cayenne arrived at the entrance of the Zuimo Court District, Li Yun got out and left.
When Yan Feifan and Duan Yu got back to their apartment in the district, they were greeted by Yu Suye, who was wearing an apron. Her clothes and face were dusted with flour, and she welcomed them with a beaming smile.
“Your sister didn’t come back with you?”
“She still has work to do, and she said she was going to Phoenix Mountain Villa for dinner. They have all sorts of delicacies and tonics there. My sister has gotten too good for our humble fare here.”
After a brief explanation, Yan Feifan turned and asked, “What have you been up to? Making noodles?”
Yu Suye announced proudly, “I’m making noodles with gravy!”
“But you don’t know how to make those,” Yan Feifan said, looking skeptical.
Yu Suye said smugly, “It’s not that I don’t know how. I just always thought it was too much trouble and too tiring, so I didn’t want to.”
“Take hand-rolled noodles, for instance. It’s just a matter of mixing flour, eggs, water, salt, and alkali in the right proportions, kneading it hard into a dough, rolling it into a thin sheet, and cutting it into strips. That’s all.”
“And as for the gravy, my mom gave me a very detailed recipe. With my skills, as long as I follow the steps, it’s bound to taste pretty good.”
She made it sound so easy. Yan Feifan cut in, “Su Ye, what step are you on now?”
Yu Suye shot him a look. “Feifan, don’t assume I’m just talking big.”
“As an excellent surgeon, my manual dexterity is top-notch, you know.”
“Let me tell you, the gravy is done.”
“The noodles are done, too. I just need to boil the water and cook them.”
“You two, just go wash your hands and wait…”
A few minutes later, Yan Feifan and Duan Yu were served two bowls of steaming noodles, along with a bowl of a gooey, dark, oily, yet ingredient-packed topping.
Under Yu Suye’s expectant gaze, Yan Feifan took a bite of the noodles, then a bite of the vegetables from the topping.
“The noodles are too soft, no bite to them.”
“And there are even clumps of dough in the noodles. Su Ye, you didn’t knead it evenly.”
“This gravy… it’s salty, you added too much pepper, and I can even taste something a little burnt…”
Yan Feifan noticed Yu Suye’s lip starting to jut out in a pout, so he quickly changed his tune. “But despite these little flaws, the good far outweighs the bad.”
“I mean, for your first time, you’ve already captured thirty or forty percent of your mom’s magic. It’s not much different from what you’d get at a noodle shop. I’d give it an 80 out of 100.”
With his words, the expression on Yu Suye’s face brightened from stormy to partly cloudy.
“Feifan, if you think it’s too salty and peppery, that’s probably just because you have a lighter palate. I’ll keep that in mind next time.”
“As for the burnt taste…”
Yu Suye said, embarrassed, “I forgot to stir for a moment, so it stuck to the pot and burned a little.”
“I’ll be more careful next time, I’ll be more careful…”
Yan Feifan quickly tried to persuade her, “Su Ye, these hands of yours are for treating the injured and saving lives, not for slaving away in a kitchen. What a waste.”
“It’s not like we can’t afford it.”
Yu Suye gave him a sweet smile. “Feifan, I just wanted to make a delicious meal for you with my own hands.”
“These noodles with gravy seemed like the easiest thing to make.”
To be fair, the noodles Yu Suye had made really weren’t bad.
The bowl of gravy was filled with expensive ingredients like sea cucumber, abalone, shrimp, fresh mushrooms, and ham. Even if they were just simply boiled, you could eat them with a lump of dough and it would be palatable.
Not wanting to waste the ingredients, Yan Feifan continued to coax her, “Su Ye, it’s the thought that counts, and that makes me very happy. You don’t have to do everything yourself.”
“What if you accidentally burn or cut your hands? That would be awful.”
“I’ll let you be willful this one time, but this is the last time, okay?”
“Come on, sit down and let’s eat the noodles you made…”
