Chapter 770 -769: The Role Model Effect
“Ah… ah, Feifan! Why are you only telling me about something so important now?”
Song Yi sounded almost frantic over the phone.
“The signing ceremony is on Friday! That’s only two days away.”
“Feifan, Extraordinary Medical Technology is more than capable of securing a plot of land in the industrial park to build our own headquarters and R&D center.”
“But how are we supposed to prepare in just two days?”
Yan Feifan chuckled guiltily. “My apologies, I wasn’t on top of it. If someone hadn’t specifically reminded me today, the thought wouldn’t have even crossed my mind.”
He paused for a moment before explaining further, “Song Yi, Friday’s ceremony is really just for signing a letter of intent. It’s more of a publicity stunt organized by the government.”
“After all, the whole process for this medical industrial park, from the government’s proposal to the final resolution, was very quick.”
“Uhm…”
Yan Feifan, sitting in the back of the moving Cayenne, switched his phone from his right ear to his left.
“I’ll give you the number for the person in charge of the industrial park. Go see him tomorrow with the relevant documents. Just mention my name and Liu Jin from the Affiliated Hospital.”
Yan Feifan slowly repeated the phone number twice so Song Yi could write it down on her end.
“Song Yi, this application process is more like a qualification review. As long as we’re capable enough, with tangible products and promising prospects for growth, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
Song Yi huffed over the phone, “We may not have been around for long, but we aren’t lacking in any of the areas you mentioned.”
“It’s just that we don’t have a big name yet. Plus, when you’re dealing with the government, all the documentation needs to be perfect and presented flawlessly.”
“Sigh. Looks like it’s going to be another all-nighter.”
“Feifan… Never mind.”
Song Yi then reconsidered. “This is on us, too. We should have someone dedicated to monitoring government policies for opportunities and risks.”
“Feifan, if there’s nothing else, I’m going to hang up and rally the team to get started…”
By the time Yan Feifan ended his call with Song Yi, the car had already pulled into the Zuimo Court District.
When he got back to his apartment, Xiaoyu, who was there to scrounge a meal, came trotting over and eagerly took his briefcase.
“Mr. Yan, you’re back! Hey, how come Su Ye and Miss. Yu aren’t with you?”
Yan Feifan explained, “Su Ye has a training and teaching surgery tonight, and Duan Yu went to spend some quality time with her boyfriend.”
“Let’s eat first. We don’t need to wait for them.”
After Yan Feifan and Tian Yu set aside a portion for Yu Suye and put it in the fridge, the two of them sat down to eat.
Tian Yu said with a grin, “Mr. Yan, my geography teacher came back to school today just to apologize to me in person.”
“He also asked me to thank you on his behalf!”
“Mr. Yan, I’ve also noticed that my other teachers, even for extracurriculars, have gotten a lot nicer to me.”
Tian Yu put on a grown-up expression and said, “Mr. Yan, I know what’s going on. They’re not being nice to me for my sake—it’s all because of you. I won’t just agree to anything they ask.”
Yan Feifan smiled. “You’re a student. Your top priority should be your studies.”
Tian Yu nodded, then changed the subject. “Mr. Yan, your research on waking up patients from vegetative states—it was a huge success, right?”
Yan Feifan chuckled. “It’s far too early to call it a huge success. I can only say that the research is progressing smoothly.”
“But you’ve had a successful start! Now you just have to ride that momentum. A huge success can’t be far off. You’re a genius doctor who can do anything, after all.”
After a bit of flattery, Tian Yu continued, “The top student in my grade, the one who got the best score on the high school entrance exam—his father is in a vegetative state.”
“I heard he’s been in a coma at home for two or three years now. It was from a car accident, they say. It’s so sad.”
Yan Feifan took a sip of soup. “For a patient in that condition, the chances of waking up are very small.”
“If all goes well, our research findings will be made public in another month or two. Perhaps we’ll be able to help him then…”
After dinner, Tian Yu helped clear the table before running back to school.
That evening, Yan Feifan received two calls, one after the other.
The first was from Zhang Run, a doctoral advisor at the Su Province Medical Research Institute. He said his ex-wife’s condition was well-controlled, but it was time for her next injection.
After a moment’s thought, Yan Feifan scheduled the injection for eleven a.m. on Thursday.
The second call was from Liang Zhao Kui.
He sounded excited over the phone, saying that just as he’d predicted, ever since they published the guidelines for the dual-surgeon heart transplant procedure, the five of them had been fielding an endless stream of inquiries.
“Feifan, they’re all clamoring for us to release a video of the surgery to prove it’s real and so they can observe and learn from it.”
“So I just said offhandedly, ‘This is the fruit of our hard labor. Why would we give it away for free?'”
“‘If you want to see the full video of the surgery, it’ll cost you fifty thousand!'”
“Feifan, what I didn’t expect was that people actually sent the money! And not just one or two, either.”
“At this point, we had no choice but to turn our joke into a reality and start selling the video with a clear price tag.”
Liang Zhao Kui added teasingly, “Feifan, guess how many copies of the video we sold today?”
“Professor, more than ten?” Yan Feifan ventured a guess.
Liang Zhao Kui laughed. “More than that! We’ve sold over twenty. Just like that, we have the funding for our observation seminar.”
He added, “Feifan, the video we’re selling is from the surgery you and Mr. Ni performed together.”
“Some people have even called to question whether the rest of us are just propping you up and creating hype.”
“Well, now they can see your true skill level for themselves. That should stop them from judging you based on seniority alone.”
“Oh, I’ve got another call coming in.”
“Feifan, I have to go…”
By the time Yu Suye returned from the hospital, it was already past ten at night.
Yu Suye pulled up a few photos and short video clips on her phone to show Yan Feifan.
“We made five small improvements to the phalloplasty procedure. Take a look and tell me what you think of the results.”
“Let me take a look and think it over,” Yan Feifan said as he watched. “You go eat first, Su Ye.”
It took Yu Suye nearly half an hour to wash up, eat, and clean the dishes.
She came into the living room and sat down on the sofa next to Yan Feifan.
“So, Feifan, what do you think?”
Yan Feifan said thoughtfully, “Three of the modifications are fine, in my opinion. One is a wasted effort.”
“And the last one, I believe, is counterproductive.”
“Look, Su Ye…”
Yan Feifan took out a pen and paper. He began to sketch on the coffee table as he explained, “This altered tendon connection might seem to increase resilience, but what happens if we twist the construct sixty degrees?”
“See? The blood vessels and nerves right here are at risk of getting twisted and tangled…”
Yu Suye picked up the diagram Yan Feifan had drawn. She studied it for a moment, thinking. “I honestly didn’t consider that.”
“Tomorrow, I’ll go dissect it to take a look…”
At this, Yu Suye cried out in alarm. She snatched her phone and yelled as she dialed, “We can’t let them destroy the results of our practice!”
Only after Yu Suye got through and explained the situation did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
“Feifan, there’s another team scheduled to use that same cadaver for their own surgical experiments overnight.”
Yu Suye chuckled. “I only found out tonight, Feifan, but you’ve apparently sparked a hospital-wide craze for practicing basic anatomy skills.”
“It’s gotten to the point where cadavers and organ specimens are in extremely short supply at the hospital.”
“Our own Mr. Chen said it’s a good thing, and that you’re setting an excellent example.”
“The hospital is now actively coordinating with other hospitals to share resources…”
