Mr. Bai’s reason for feigning mental incapacitation wasn’t complicated.
Like a man waking from a long dream, the first thing Mr. Bai heard upon regaining consciousness was a fierce argument between his son and his own younger sister.
From their argument, Mr. Bai confirmed two things. First, he had been in a coma for over half a year. Second, his relatives were covetously eyeing his assets, fighting and scrambling over them.
His heart chilled, Mr. Bai decided to see for himself who the ungrateful wretches were and who truly cared for him.
“Mr. Yan, please don’t expose me just yet. I’ve already figured out most of what’s going on, and I’ve made arrangements for my company’s affairs through a reliable contact.”
Mr. Bai said with a sincere look, “Mr. Yan, you don’t need to keep this secret for much longer. Just until next Monday will be enough.”
He added, “Mr. Yan, I’m well aware that I owe my recovery entirely to your experimental infrasound therapy.”
“Once I’ve sorted out my family and company matters, I will be sure to properly thank you for your efforts, Mr. Yan.”
Yan Feifan was quite pleased to hear that.
He agreed to keep Mr. Bai’s secret for the time being, then gave him another physical examination.
The results of the examination surprised Yan Feifan.
Of the three patients who had awakened, Mr. Bai, who had been in a coma the longest, was actually in the best condition.
Aside from some lingering numbness on the right side of his body, the man had no other symptoms of discomfort.
Just as Yan Feifan was about to leave, he seemed to remember something. He stopped, turned his head, and gave Xv Shuang a stern order.
“An oversight, what an oversight!”
“Xv Shuang, stop Mr. Bai’s IV drip immediately. Then, take the new prescription I’m about to write, go to the pharmacy, and get the new medication for him.”
Yan Feifan’s words made Mr. Bai nervous.
“Mr. Yan, everything you said at the beginning… you were just trying to scare me, weren’t you?”
“It’s not really true, is it?”
Yan Feifan laughed it off and said with a sincere expression, “Mr. Bai, I was just bluffing. But since your body has almost fully recovered, we naturally need to change your medication.”
“Please, don’t overthink it…”
Once outside the ward, Yan Feifan huffed softly. ‘If I don’t make you worry yourself sick for a few days, then my name isn’t Yan!’
This childish behavior of his made Duan Yu and Xv Shuang, who were following behind, unable to hold back their laughter…
On the car ride back to Zuimo Court, Yan Feifan remembered something else.
“Duan Yu, I lost our bet.”
“I’m free this Saturday. Are there any particular dishes you and your boyfriend want to eat, or any restaurant you’d like to go to?”
Duan Yu, who was driving, thought for a moment and replied, “No special requests, Mr. Yan. You can decide.”
“Your lifestyle and taste are much more refined than ours. I’m sure any place you choose will be great.”
Yan Feifan smiled. “Now that you’ve said that, I can’t just pick a random place. I’ll have to put some real thought into it.”
The problem was, the places he usually treated people to were Luo’s Private Kitchen, Jinxiu Grand Hotel, and Xinfeng Restaurant.
And Duan Yu had already been to all three.
Unable to think of a better option on the spot, Yan Feifan came up with a convenient solution.
‘When there’s work to be done, the disciple serves!’
Yan Feifan sent a message to Pan Jichuan, asking him to book a restaurant with decent food and atmosphere for this Saturday at noon, for a party of four to six.
After sending the message, he asked Duan Yu another question.
“Mo Xiaolei has been working in hospital logistics for a while now. Is he adjusting well?”
“He’s doing okay!”
Duan Yu chuckled. “His job is mainly to inspect the cafeterias’ hygiene and food quality, and to spot-check the quality of incoming supplies like vegetables, eggs, grains, oils, and seasonings.”
“It’s all somewhat related to his previous work as a chef, so he’s not having much trouble with it.”
“Mo Xiaolei said the cafeteria contractors are actually quite conscientious. Regardless of how the food tastes, the ingredients, grains, oils, and seasonings they purchase are at least mid-to-high grade, if not the very best.”
Yan Feifan said with a dry laugh, “It would be a real joke if the Affiliated Hospital had a problem with its food quality.”
“The cafeteria owners would be the first to get arrested and severely punished.”
Then he added with a look of disdain, “The ingredients are all good, but the food they make is still so terrible. Those chefs must be something else.”
Duan Yu chuckled lightly. “Mr. Yan, that’s just because your standards are too high. I think it tastes pretty good…”
The two chatted idly for a while until the Cayenne drove into the Zuimo Court District.
When they arrived at the apartment, they saw his sister, Su Ye, and Xiaoyu talking and laughing, waiting for them to eat together.
“Sis, what brings you back?” Yan Feifan asked casually.
Yan Ziruo sighed lightly. “Our uncle booked a flight to Malaysia for Sunday. I figured I should give the two of them some time alone to talk things out.”
Yan Feifan said, “Oh,” then changed the subject. “What were you all talking about just now? You looked so happy.”
Tian Yu jumped in first. “Mr. Yan, we were talking about how to survive, achieve great things, and make a name for ourselves if we time-traveled to ancient times.”
She giggled and said, “Our science elective class has a special topic: skills you’d need to master if you time-traveled to the past.”
“The teacher taught us a lot of practical skills…”
Tian Yu counted on her fingers. “Refining salt, making soap, rudimentary iron and steel smelting, making gunpowder, making glass, selective crop breeding, and grafting.”
“Oh, and also, papermaking, distilling high-proof alcohol, disinfection and sterilization, treating external wounds, and plague prevention and control.”
Hearing this, Yan Feifan chimed in, “Plague prevention and control is a very necessary one to learn. In fact, it should be the first thing you learn.”
“Because the first thing you would face after time-traveling would be a massive plague that could wipe out humanity.”
“What a coincidence that would be,” Tian Yu said, her face full of doubt.
Yan Feifan reached out and flicked the little girl on the forehead. He smiled and said, “It’s not a matter of coincidence. You time-travelers would be the ones to bring the plague with you.”
Tian Yu let out a small “ah,” her face a mask of confusion.
Yan Feifan explained, “We modern people not only get vaccinated from a young age, but we also inherit all sorts of viral antibodies that have been accumulated and passed down from our ancestors for generations.”
“People in ancient times didn’t have nearly as many antibodies.”
“To them, you time-travelers would be like walking, giant virus reservoirs.”
“They would have no resistance to the viruses you carry, and the natural result would be death on a massive scale.”
“Su Ye, is that true?” Tian Yu was still a little skeptical.
Yu Suye hummed in agreement. “I hadn’t thought of that when we were chatting earlier. But what Feifan said is highly likely to happen.”
“There are similar examples in history.”
She recalled, “One of the reasons for the massive depopulation of Native Americans, besides being massacred, was plague.”
“The indigenous people of the Americas had virtually no immunity to virulent infectious diseases from the Old World, like smallpox, typhoid, and cholera.”
“The plagues caused by these diseases wiped out entire villages and tribes of Native Americans.”
Tian Yu let out a long “Ohhh.” “I guess physically time-traveling is out, then. You’d have to just transmigrate your soul into an ancient person’s body.”
Yan Feifan flicked the little girl on the forehead again.
“Stop thinking about such nonsensical things. Hurry up and finish eating so you can go to school and study…”
They were halfway through their meal, talking and laughing, when Yu Suye suddenly spoke up. “Feifan, have I ever told you I have an aunt?”
Yan Feifan grunted in affirmation. “You have. She’s a cardiothoracic surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital, USA.”
“What about her?”
Yu Suye said softly, “She’s very interested in your dual-chief-surgeon method and is coming to Binhai in a little while to attend your observation seminar.”
“This will be her first time back in the country in several decades…”
