Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 788: No Comparison

It was Friday again. Yan Feifan arrived at the cardiac surgery department to participate in a major surgery of the highest difficulty as Dr. Liang Zhao Kui’s surgical assistant.

Aortic arch replacement surgery!

This was a complex, high-risk, and extremely difficult major surgery. The total length of the surgical incisions on the patient’s body alone exceeded one meter.

The cardiac surgery department at Binhai University Affiliated Hospital was currently the only hospital in all of Binhai with a relatively high chance of successfully completing this procedure.

The surgery was performed jointly by three expert-level chief physicians: Liang Zhao Kui, Gu Lin, and Ni Leixing.

Although it was Yan Feifan’s first time participating in such a procedure, he did more than just assist Mr. Liang; he also performed some substantial work himself.

The surgery involved a great deal of arterial suturing, which happened to be Yan Feifan’s specialty.

As Dr. Gu Lin jokingly put it, if Yan Feifan were to switch careers and become a tailor, he would surely surpass even the finest bespoke masters in Italy.

During this collaborative surgery, which lasted over six hours, Dr. Liang Zhao Kui didn’t assign Yan Feifan too many specific tasks. The main goal was for him to focus on observing and grasping the procedure in its entirety.

In Dr. Liang’s opinion, Yan Feifan’s surgical skills were already at a level where he could handle a procedure of any difficulty. What he lacked was simply experience.

Aortic arch replacement surgery has many difficult junctures. Handling these critical points in the procedure isn’t something one can learn just from reading textbooks; it requires hands-on instruction.

Furthermore, a complex and difficult surgery requires a team, making coordination and teamwork essential.

Take this surgery, for instance: three lead surgeons, three assistants, two technicians dedicated to the heart-lung machine and other medical equipment, plus the anesthesiologists and nurses. In total, more than twelve medical personnel were directly involved in the operating room.

This meant that when Yan Feifan eventually leads similar major surgeries, he will need to think beyond the role of lead surgeon and oversee the entire operation from a higher-level, strategic perspective.

The five titans of the cardiac surgery department had taken ten to twenty years of working together to achieve their current level of almost telepathic coordination…

The ICU ward of the Little Red House.

After coming out of the patient room and taking off his sealed protective suit, Yu Beihua was surprised to see Yu Youhai smiling at him from the hallway.

“Mr. Hai, what brings you here?”

“The preparations for the Baining Marine Branch Hospital have entered the execution phase, so I’ll be traveling between Jingcheng and Binhai a lot more.”

Yu Youhai explained, then noticed Yu Beihua’s bloodshot eyes and exhausted face. “You look like you’ve pulled more than one all-nighter,” he said with concern.

Peering through the large window, Yu Beihua’s gaze shifted to the patient still in a coma inside the ICU.

“Dr. Kevin Vega’s American patient. After the surgery on Wednesday night, I’ve been in charge of the post-operative care.”

“Things will get a lot better once he’s out of the ICU.”

Yu Youhai sighed softly. “Beihua, why did you insist on choosing neurosurgery on your own?”

“That’s not one of Baining’s strong suits. And Mr. Yan’s specialty in brain tumor puncture injections isn’t something just anyone can learn.”

“Besides, in the field of neurosurgery, there probably isn’t much Mr. Yan can teach you anymore, is there?”

Yu Beihua chuckled. “Mr. Hai, once I’ve completed my training and returned to Baining, won’t neurosurgery become one of our strong departments then?”

After a brief pause, Yu Beihua’s playful expression turned serious.

“Mr. Hai, whenever I have free time, I study neurosurgery with Dr. Qiu Ge. And when Mr. Vega performs brain tumor surgeries, I serve as his assistant.”

“There’s also Dr. Qin Feng from the PLA General Hospital. I’m able to observe his surgeries and ask him for guidance.”

“Mr. Vega, Dr. Qin Feng, and Dr. Qiu Ge are all top neurosurgeons, both nationally and internationally. It’s as if I’m being mentored by all three of them simultaneously.”

“Dr. Qiu treats me just like one of her own students, if not better.”

“During surgery, Mr. Vega often gives me pointers. Dr. Qin Feng answers any question I have without reservation, and he even quizzes and advises me.”

“They’re all so good to me, so open with their knowledge, simply because I’m my mentor’s student.”

“As for my mentor not having much left to teach me…”

Yu Beihua said gravely, “Mr. Hai, you’re mistaken!”

“Whenever I have a question that Dr. Qiu, Mr. Qin, or Mr. Vega can’t answer to my satisfaction, I go to my mentor.”

“My mentor’s mind is like a medical library. Every single question I have is met with a detailed, well-reasoned, and extensively-researched answer from him.”

A faint smile spread across Yu Youhai’s face. “Beihua, hearing you put it like that, it seems I really was mistaken.”

“You have such a fantastic opportunity to learn, so cherish it and work hard. In three or four years, when the Baining Marine Branch Hospital is built and operational, I’ll be counting on you to anchor our neurosurgery department.”

Yu Beihua said, a little embarrassed, “Mr. Hai, you think too highly of me. I can’t possibly grow that quickly.”

Yu Youhai chuckled. “But you’re the student of the genius doctor, Yan Feifan. It only took him six months to shoot to stardom. Giving you three or four years is already selling you short.”

Yu Beihua scratched his head. “Mr. Hai, I can’t compare myself to my mentor. We’re worlds apart—the difference between heaven and earth.”

Yu Youhai laughed again. “Then compare yourself to your aunt, Su Ye. Yuwen says Su Ye’s technical skills are now comparable to a chief physician’s, and she has even surpassed him by quite a bit.”

“And Su Ye’s improvement only took six months.”

Yu Beihua grimaced. “Mr. Hai, I can’t compare to Aunt Su Ye, either.”

“Aunt Su Ye is incredibly talented to begin with, plus she has my mentor’s personal guidance and a massive amount of resources being funneled to her.”

“Mr. Hai, my mentor invests hundreds of thousands in Aunt Su Ye every week, letting her freely choose surgeries to hone her skills.”

“Who else has such amazing conditions to grow?”

Yu Youhai stroked his chin and nodded. ‘It seems their relationship is deeper than I thought. And neither of them is that young anymore.’

‘I should discuss this with the elders on both sides…’

Yu Youhai paused, then changed the subject. “Beihua, I heard Mr. Yan is helping a researcher named Zhang Run from Su Province test an anti-cancer drug.”

“How much do you know about that…?”

At 5:30 in the afternoon, after finishing the aortic arch replacement surgery and taking some time to rest, Yan Feifan hurried over to the neurosurgery department.

It was time to perform the infrasound resonance stimulation therapy on the patients in deep comas.

Together with Dr. Qiu Ge, Yan Feifan began the pre-treatment examination of Patient Two, who was lying face down on the therapy bed.

“Mr. Yan, it’s already Friday. Based on probability, we’ve been seeing one patient wake up per week.”

“So, who do you bet will wake up in the next two or three days? Patient Two, Three, or Six?”

Yan Feifan couldn’t help but laugh. “Dr. Qiu, we only have a total of six patients. That’s too small a sample size to support any kind of probability analysis.”

Dr. Qiu Ge chuckled. “Just guess. It’s purely for entertainment.”

“I’ll guess Number Three!”

Seeing him remain silent, Dr. Qiu Ge changed the subject. “Mr. Yan, a lot of families with relatives in deep comas have been finding me through various connections.”

“They’re asking about the next round of trial treatments.”

Yan Feifan said slowly, “Dr. Qiu, for the next round of trial treatments, you will need to be responsible for the punctures.”

As he spoke, he inserted the puncture needle.

The moment he inserted it, Yan Feifan sensed something was wrong.

The patient’s shaved head, right under his hand, had actually started to move…
