Chapter 411: Chapter 365: I Will Teach You
The Beastmen’s reactions gave her a solid foundation, showing her how to proceed and what to adjust next.
Gu Ning checked the view count. It had already accumulated over ten million clicks, with more than a million concurrent viewers online—far more popular than any of her previous videos.
The number of viewers was still skyrocketing.
Gu Ning scrolled down to the comment section.
The video had been up for less than half a day, but there were already hundreds of thousands of comments.
The constant stream of new comments made her interface lag.
Afraid the app would crash, Gu Ning decided to focus on the top comments for the time being.
The top-rated comment read:
[The moment I saw Yuanbao’s face, I knew my life was over.]
Replies:
1L: [My life was already over. Seeing her face felt like I died and came back to life.]
2L: [@1L, you just fainted.]
5L: [So this is what it feels like to be dizzy? I thought I died and came back to life too (puppy collapses).]
11L: [I’m dizzy too. My heart’s beating so fast, I feel like I’m actually going to die.]
26L: [You’re all dizzy. Unlike you guys, I watched this lying down. I just... blacked out for a few seconds.]
56L: [Loving Yuanbao is as easy as breathing. You needed to see her face for that? Your heart isn’t pure. You’re forbidden from liking Yuanbao.]
250L: [I hereby declare that Yuanbao is my new standard for choosing a mate.]
251L: [@250L can you get lost? ’Standard for a mate’? The nerve. I’ll eat my hat if a real-life female even gives you a second glance.]
322L: [(Vomits) That moron at 250L, Yuanbao is a virtual female. Even if she were looking for a mate, it wouldn’t be you.]
520L: [Yuanbao, my dear Yuanbao, what am I going to do with my life now? WAHHH (kitty wiping away tears).]
Reading these heartfelt comments, Gu Ning raised an eyebrow. The interface felt a little smoother, so she continued scrolling down.
[Have you guys never seen a female before? Getting all worked up like this.]
[Exactly. They’re just a bunch of morons who’ve never seen a female.]
[If they’d ever seen a real female, they wouldn’t be so thirsty online.]
[A bunch of pathetic creatures controlled by hormones. There’s nothing in their heads but mating.]
[...]
Amidst the otherwise harmonious comments, these few remarks had sparked a flame war. Since they were near the top, Gu Ning watched for a bit.
She noticed that the accounts behind these prickly comments all had Bird Clan avatars. Their fighting prowess was astounding. Even with tens of thousands of replies flaming them, their responses showed no sign of flagging. In fact, they only fought with more vigor and with excellent coordination. With an air of nonchalance, they drove the other Beastmen into a frenzy. The arguments would escalate to the point where those who couldn’t win with words would demand a one-on-one fight offline.
[You damn bird-brain, running your mouth is no skill! Got the guts? Drop your address! See if I don’t beat the bird shit out of you!]
[Wipe your own dog shit first. The stink is getting to me.]
[No need for an address. You can have the win. There’s no glory in winning a fight against a dog.]
[I could smell that dog stench from a mile away. *Pinches nose and flies off*]
[Stop chasing me, little doggy. I can just hover in place and you still won’t be able to bite me.]
[Here, boy, here! Fresh bird droppings for you. Open wide, little doggy.]
Gu Ning was left in awe.
’It’s not just their offline fighting skills that are astonishing,’ she thought. ’Online, they’re like one against a hundred, their calm and composed demeanor a stark contrast to the other frenzied Beastmen.’
After scrolling through the comments for a while, Gu Ning logged out and started looking through the footage she had shot on the road recently.
Idelos still hadn’t responded to her proposal, but Gu Ning wasn’t in a hurry. It would be better if Idelos got back to her in a few days, as it would give Gu Ning time to handle her work for the Military Department.
A little while ago, Admiral Andrew had reminded her that she could go to the relevant department to collect this month’s benefits.
She hadn’t completed a single assignment this month. ’Admiral Andrew isn’t just reminding me to collect my benefits,’ she thought. ’He’s also reminding me that it’s time to get to work.’
Before her position was made official, the requirement was to submit two articles a month. All this time had passed, and she’d only submitted one.
Even though Admiral Andrew hadn’t assigned her any work yet, she needed to show some initiative. At the very least, she should make up for her previous backlog.
Gu Ning was completely absorbed in writing her article when dinnertime arrived. Barto, finished with his meeting, returned to the hospital room with food.
"What are you doing?"
Barto walked over to her side. He saw Gu Ning sitting cross-legged before the coffee table, hunched over and writing something with a pen and paper.
"Writing a news article," Gu Ning said without looking up.
Barto raised an eyebrow. He set down the food container, leaned over to look, and gently pulled her hand away. "Let me see."
The characters were unfamiliar. He couldn’t understand them at all.
"What kind of writing is this?" he asked.
This was the first time he had ever seen Gu Ning write like this.
Gu Ning instinctively tried to cover it, but then stopped. ’We’ve already been completely honest with each other,’ she thought. ’There’s no reason to hide this.’
She moved her hand away. "It’s my language."
’Besides,’ she thought, ’the terminal can translate it anyway. I might as well write the draft first and have the terminal translate it. At least I’ll be more efficient this way.’
Barto sat down beside her. He picked up the paper and studied it. "I thought you couldn’t write."
"Of course I can," Gu Ning said.
’I graduated from college. How could I be illiterate?’ she thought indignantly.
Barto stared at her face for a moment but didn’t press the issue. He folded the paper, set it aside, and opened the food container. "Time to eat."
He thought for a moment, then added, "If you want to communicate in your own language, you can speak it with me whenever you like."
"Maybe later," Gu Ning said.
"Why later?" Barto asked. He guessed she might not want others to know about her origins. "You can speak it just with me."
Gu Ning pointed at the news article, then tapped her terminal. "I have... a lot to do. No time... to teach you."
At least she could now barely communicate with them in the Beastman language, and her terminal could translate written Beastman into a script she could read. The reverse, however, wasn’t possible.
Hearing this, Barto understood what she meant. "Just speak it to me whenever you want. I’ll learn it myself."
Gu Ning asked, "How would you learn?"
’This world doesn’t have any textbooks or translation tools for my language.’
"Just speak," Barto said. "I’m not an idiot. How hard can learning a language be?"
Gu Ning blinked, staring at the little fox.
Barto said, "...I wasn’t talking about you."
Gu Ning retorted, "You were."
If he hadn’t said anything, it would’ve been fine. But by denying it, he was definitely implying it was about her.
Barto pressed his lips into a thin line and said seriously, "I was meaning to tell you this afternoon, you’re an official journalist for the Military Department now. You’ll have to make public appearances and conduct interviews in the future, so you need to practice the common tongue. I can help you with the written articles, but you’ll be on your own for the interviews."
Although he wanted to help her and planned to stay by her side, there would inevitably be times when he wasn’t around. She had to solve the language issue first.
The incident with Vine was the perfect example of why.
Gu Ning nodded. She’d been thinking the same thing.
"After you’ve rested for a few more days, we’ll head to Zone 5," Barto said. "I’ll spend these next few days teaching you the common tongue of the Beast Alliance. You were a slow learner before because you didn’t have the right methods... or the right teacher."
’Alex was actually a pretty good teacher,’ Gu Ning thought.
Barto took off her translation earpiece. "I guarantee I’ll have you fluent in no time."
