Chapter 364: Chapter 114: Fierce Battle at Bai Ma Ferry
"Fire! Quick! Fire your arrows!" Knight Vid shouted, using his Knight’s Sword to beat back a batch of Beastman Soldiers who were about to climb over. He turned and ordered the Soldiers behind him.
If you had to name who had suffered the most grievous losses lately, it would have to be Knight Vid.
The reason was simple: Knight Vid’s territory was the closest to Bai Ma Ferry. When the Beastmen first appeared, they hadn’t yet reached his domain, and Vid was content to wait and see how the situation developed.
You couldn’t blame Vid for being selfish. Sri County was newly established, and its County Governor, Viscount Jeffrey, was not much of an organizer.
The assault from the routed Beastman army had been too sudden, and no one was prepared. Under such circumstances, the most sensible course of action was to do exactly as Knight Vid had done: stay put and defend one’s own position.
Knight Vid had been observing the situation quite happily, but then the Beastmen suddenly went mad for some reason, ignoring the numerous Human Territories in their path and making a beeline for Bai Ma Ferry.
The other defeated nobles fled one after another toward Viscount Jeffrey’s territory. Some, in an even greater panic, ran straight for Feiying Pass, abandoning their lands entirely.
It was a noble’s duty to defend their land. If they fled too far, they would be investigated later, and a misstep could cost them their titles and domains.
This left Knight Vid in a bind, with no choice but to retreat to Bai Ma Ferry.
Fortunately, for some unknown reason, a garrison from the Fengman Clan was stationed at Bai Ma Ferry, so his safety was guaranteed, at least for now.
"Sir Grem, any idea when the Viscount’s reinforcements will finally arrive? If this keeps up, I’m afraid Bai Ma Ferry will fall to these Beastmen. Things will get complicated then!" Knight Vid knocked another Beastman Soldier off the defenses and looked toward an old man at his side—an elderly Knight, to be precise.
This was the commander from the Fengman Clan in charge of defending Bai Ma Ferry.
It was only in the last two days, after arriving at Bai Ma Ferry, that Vid learned such a person even existed in Sri County. He had no idea when the Fengman Clan’s troops had appeared, as if they’d flown in.
Sir Grem’s face was also pale. Knighthood was a young man’s game, but Sir Grem was already in his twilight years. By the average lifespan of the Franks, he basically had one foot in the grave.
The scale of the Beastman Army besieging Bai Ma Ferry far exceeded Sir Grem’s expectations.
Especially since yesterday, the Beastmen had been relentlessly attacking day and night. Their preparations had initially been sufficient, but now they were stretched thin.
"Rest assured, Sir Vid," Sir Grem said, looking at him. "I’ve already sent all the ferry boats to the opposite bank. Even if these Beastmen breach our defenses, they won’t be able to destroy the boats. The Viscount’s army will still be able to cross the river as planned."
"Huh?"
Vid stared at Grem in shock, utterly dumbfounded.
’Are you serious?’
"It is a pity about these soldiers, however. If the Viscount doesn’t arrive in time, we may have to make our last stand here," Sir Grem sighed.
Sir Grem was a textbook example of a Knight raised by the Fengman Clan: unconditionally loyal to his lord, with a spirit of dedication and self-sacrifice.
This left Vid completely at a loss.
’Who wants to make a last stand here with you?’
Knight Vid wanted to cry but had no tears. ’If I’d known it would come to this, I would have fled with the others to Viscount Jeffrey’s territory,’ he thought. ’At least then I would have saved my own skin. Anything would be better than this.’
"The Beastmen are coming again! Quick! Get ready!"
"The logs! Where are the logs? Get them up here, now!"
’So soon!’
Knight Vid hastily looked down from the fortifications. The Beastmen who had just fallen back were already charging again.
"Damn it! These bastards!"
Watching the Beastman Army below, a surge of anger rose in Vid.
"Where are the arrows? The oil?"
"Sir! Sir! It’s terrible!"
Just as Vid was gritting his teeth at the sight of the Beastmen below, a few of the guards who had accompanied him ran over.
"Sir! We’re out of logs and oil!" one of the guards said to Vid, his face frantic with worry.
Bai Ma Ferry wasn’t a large place. There was never much room to store bulky equipment like logs, even if they had packed the ferry crossing full.
"Is there anything else to break apart? Start dismantling anything in Bai Ma Ferry that..."
"Look over there! What is that!"
Just as Vid was about to order his men to start tearing down some of the structures for defense, a clamor suddenly erupted from the crowd.
Vid froze, confused.
The shouting grew louder, and all eyes turned to the north.
"Look over there! What is that!" It wasn’t just the Soldiers; even Sir Grem cried out in astonishment.
Vid followed Sir Grem’s gaze to see two colossal creatures flying in the distant sky.
"Is that... a dragon?! But what’s that thing next to it?"
.....
"Mendes! Trouble! Mendes!"
"Mendes!"
Mendes was intently watching the battle at Bai Ma Ferry. The Beastmen and humans were locked in fierce combat. A good number of Beastman Soldiers had already stormed the ferry crossing, and the enemy’s counterattacks were growing increasingly feeble.
At this rate, barring any surprises, the battle would be decided by morning.
Hearing someone shout his name, Mendes turned to see the Dwarf Officer rushing toward him.
"What is it? What’s happened?" Mendes asked the Dwarf Officer, a hint of confusion in his voice.
This Dwarf Officer had previously served under Tec.
Prince Odoruo’s forces were different from a typical Beastman Army. The internal conflicts between the great clans weren’t as pronounced here, and Mendes had always been on good terms with this Dwarf Officer.
"Quick! Look to the north! Something’s coming from the north!" the Dwarf Officer said to Mendes, his face filled with anxiety.
"The north?" Mendes was baffled.
The main approach to Bai Ma Ferry was from the east, so Mendes was positioned to the east of the crossing.
ROAR!
As if to prove the Dwarf Officer’s words, a roar echoed from the north right on cue.
The sound drew Mendes’s attention, and he looked in the direction it came from.
"That’s... a dragon! A great dragon!"
Though Mendes had never seen a real dragon in his life, they were legendary creatures whose stories were told all across the continent.
He may have never seen one, but he was familiar enough with their appearance. The beast was still far away, but Mendes could already make out its general form.
’The question is, whose side is this dragon on?’
That question didn’t trouble Mendes for long.
Because he heard another cry—the call of a phoenix.
And with that cry appeared a phoenix, its body entirely pure white.
Mendes narrowed his eyes. Staring at the bird, he was reminded of that morning.
