Chapter 455: Chapter 451: All Gathered Together
The driver glanced expressionlessly at this bunch of oddballs. "Starfire Team is bringing up the rear. They’re in vehicle nine. How about you guys do it instead?"
’The rumors were true, after all.’
’The Fierce Tiger Squad had to have the Starfire Team with them wherever they went. If Starfire wasn’t in sight for a single minute, they’d start bawling like a toddler who’d lost its mommy...’
Li Xiang fell silent. He sulked back to his seat, pouting, "Well, just drive then. This sandstorm feels like it’s getting worse. Let’s get going, stop dawdling."
The driver remained as still as a mountain.
Ge Yan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She pulled a small packet of preserved plums from her Space and shoved it at the endlessly babbling Li Xiang. "Just eat. He’s waiting for orders."
"Hey, buddy, what vehicle number are we? Got any bottled water?" Mr. Wang yelled to the driver, half-lifting himself off his seat.
The driver shot the group of oddballs a cold glare in the rearview mirror. "You want me to sing a song to liven things up? Need a tour guide, too?"
Everyone: ...
Li Xiang popped a preserved plum into his mouth and tugged on Mr. Wang, who was sitting in front of him. "What are you yapping for? This isn’t a vacation."
Xu Bailiang shot them a look of amused exasperation. ’These idiots are going to be the death of me.’
A convoy of nearly seven hundred people in forty to fifty vehicles was a spectacle that naturally alarmed the entire Jingji Base.
Many people even ran out of the shelters to watch, whispering to one another in amazement.
"Didn’t I see over a dozen vehicles leave this morning?"
"I wonder if something happened."
"I hear a few of the surrounding bases are in trouble. Something about a rescue mission."
"What? All the High-level Superpower Users are leaving? What’s going to happen to us?"
"Yeah! What if another zombie horde attacks?"
"That can’t be right. They have to leave us with adequate protection."
"Exactly! They can’t just abandon us to help someone else."
The soldiers patrolling the shelter entrance glanced expressionlessly at the crowd.
’If the sandstorm wasn’t so bad, they’d probably stand here yapping for half the day instead of muttering a few words and scurrying back inside.’
"Golden World Court!"
"Unrivaled in the world!"
"Golden World Court!"
"Beyond compare!"
The patrol soldiers remained expressionless, side-eying the grand procession of a dozen or so people marching past them.
They were highly trained and disciplined enough not to laugh at bizarre sights—unless they absolutely couldn’t hold it in...
The members of Golden World Court marched toward the vehicles ahead, carrying a flag as if they were a grand army.
As expected, they drew stares from everyone along the way.
Even Song Kexin and the others were drawn by the shouting, and they all crowded around the window to gawk.
"Sis! Sis, look! Do you know them?"
Xie Ning craned her neck to look out the window.
A group of people struggled forward, buffeted by the strong winds and sand. The one in the lead was wearing a beige suit. With her vision, Xie Ning could clearly see his head glistening with pomade.
His hair was slicked back into an elaborate, ’artistic’ coif...
Xie Ning took one look and immediately pulled her head back in, shooting her sister a look. "You think I associate with clowns like that?"
’They obviously have something wrong with their heads.’
Two bodyguard-like teammates flanked the man with the slicked-back hair. One carried their flag and led the chants, while the other held an umbrella over him, escorting him on his way.
’An entourage like that, and she thinks I’d know them?’
’As if I’d know people who are clearly not all there!’
Song Kexin glanced silently at her sister and muttered under her breath, "But I feel like..."
’...I feel like you always have some kind of weird connection to oddballs like these, sis.’
’Like those people you took in before—whether it was Yu Tianfeng or Cres, they were all a far cry from normal...’
Li Dawei, also gawking from the window, was stunned. "Whoa, I can’t believe it! What a bunch of characters! Someone’s actually more over-the-top than us."
Li Xiang, with a preserved plum in his cheek, mumbled indistinctly from his spot at the window, "Bro, bro, look! What the heck is that?"
"Whoa, whoa, amazing! What’s up with the sandstorm? It looks like it’s skirting right around the edge of their team."
Someone with sharp eyes noticed something unusual about the squad.
Xie Ning glanced over again before looking away, raising an eyebrow.
’That bizarre team actually has a fairly powerful Spiritual controller.’
Cres leaned on the window frame, smiling. "Impressive. The Spirit Barrier has a pretty wide range. At this rate, their Spiritual Ability must be at least Fourth Rank, right?"
"Golden World Court!"
"Golden World Court!"
Xie Ning craned her neck to look out again. "Is Golden World Court their team name?"
"I guess so," Song Kexin said, almost bursting out laughing. She clutched a bag of chips, unable to hide her grin. "It sounds just like a hotel."
"I think it is," Song Youxuan said, looking puzzled. "I think I remember hearing about a Golden World Court hotel before the apocalypse. It was a pretty high-end, five-star place."
"See?" Song Kexin roared with laughter. "This team is really something else! Their name is even more random than the Fierce Tiger Squad’s."
"Maybe it wasn’t a random choice."
"It must mean something to them."
"Golden World Court!" the group chanted as they passed the vehicle, heading for car number eight up ahead.
The man with the slicked-back hair suddenly seemed to sense something and turned his head, locking eyes with the members of Starfire Team crowded at the window.
’The guy was actually pretty handsome, he just gave off the vibe that he wasn’t playing with a full deck...’
All the members of Golden World Court turned their heads in unison to stare at Starfire Team, and in that instant, passionate sparks flew.
"Golden World Court!" The roar nearly split the heavens.
Xie Ning expressionlessly sat back down and yanked the window curtain shut. Out of sight, out of mind.
"HAHAHAHAHA!" Song Shijun nearly fell out of his seat with laughter.
"Those guys are hilarious."
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. The vehicle’s door was suddenly knocked on.
The driver, Xiao Wu, expressionlessly opened the door and watched the slick-haired young man ascend the steps.
’In this wind and sand, the man was wearing a crisp suit with a matching tie.’
’Compared to the soldiers’ camouflage combat gear, he was a complete eyesore.’
’Is he here for a picnic or something?!’
The slick-haired man’s gaze swept over the members of Starfire Team, who were all suppressing laughter. His eyes finally landed on Xie Ning and immediately lit up.
He then gave his hair a stylish flip and strode confidently over to Xie Ning. "You must be Captain Xie of the Starfire Team."
"I am Fan Youchen, captain of the Golden World Court. I wonder if I might have the honor of inviting you to my vehicle for a visit, Captain Xie?"
He took one step forward, slid his other foot back half a step, and leaned sideways against a seat back, striking what he must have thought was a charming, seductive pose.
This was the scene that greeted Gu Chen and Lu Wei as they boarded the vehicle...
Lu Wei could barely watch. He stole a glance at his brother, whose face had turned dangerously dark.
Meanwhile, the target of this seduction, a woman seemingly made of steel, stared blankly at Fan Youchen for a long moment. Then, she suddenly drew back her fist and slammed it into his stomach.
From the front seats, Song You’ai and Song Youzhi had already lunged forward to intervene, but it was too late.
Fan Youchen shot past them like a cannonball and flew out of the vehicle.
